  • Notre Dame always has good QBs and near the turn of the century, they had a young guy who led them to a national title game and the sky was the limit for him, but sadly a multitude of factors led to his downfall and he never panned out like many thought he could have. Today we will talk about the rise & fall of Everett Golson, enjoy!

    Where's the tragedy here? This is just how it goes for the vast majority of college athletes. He had a great career. He was probably never going to be a real NFL prospect in that era. He's off living his life now. Nothing tragic here...

    i was attending FSU when he was there, and honestly what lost him the job to Sean Maguire was the frustration he was instilling in the fans. We remember seeing him play as a baller in 2014, but on FSU he was probably the most timid qb ive ever seen. He would sit in perfect pockets for a very long time but then just throw the ball away. Yes we won all those games before the Georgia Tech game, but almost all of those were comeback victories we should have won more easily due to the talent we had.
    We were ALL calling for Sean Maguire by the midpoint of the season.

    The same thing that happens to non-natural QBs who go to ND. Kelly loves their athleticism, yet hates their athleticism as the determining factor of whether they can effectively play the QB position. So, Kelly tries to coach out their most natural ability in order to maximize play percentages and effectiveness. For Golson it was the fact that he was not a great passer. But, he could throw the ball. He had the penchant for leaving the pocket at times early. Could he read defenses? I always felt he was mediocre in recognizing pre-snap defense. But, the one thing that hampered him the most was Kelly playing mind games, and his suspension for cheating. All of the successive QBs had the same issue and profile, Zaire, Wimbush: Athletic, good throwers, mechanics need a lot of work, elusive, powerful runners, not great readers of defense. Kizer was Different in that he was more pass 1st, and run 2nd.

  • @TheThatGuy2TheLeft
    @TheThatGuy2TheLeft 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, he never picked up any momentum. Had he gotten to play his sophomore year who knows where he would have ended up. But he had to take a year off and not be around his teammates and that screwed up a lot of chemistry I think. He didn’t have any of his weapons he played with as a freshman still playing at ND since Cierre Wood and Theo Riddick were both gone, TJ Jones, Robby Toma, Tyler Eifert, and John Goodman were all gone as well. When he came back, it was Will Fuller, Corey Robinson, CJ Prosise, Amir Carlisle and Ben Koyack. That was a huge turnover.

    I see Golson and it reminds me of the current 2021 Football team.. Rees and Golson are Coan and Buchner... you heard it first here that kelly will split reps with the duel threat type QB instead of the stay in the pocket guy. This will work and make ND very dangerous if successful.

    I am a huge Everett Golson fan, and I think he had tons of talent. That said, talented athletes fail every day for one reason or another. People can speculate on why one athlete fails while another one succeeds, but in the end it is simply speculation. My thoughts on why any athlete fails is not because of a lack of talent, but because of either a lack of confidence, a lack of discipline, or both. How did Tom Brady become the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL? It definitely wasn’t because of athletic ability. It was because he had an incredible will to win, and he was incredibly disciplined in his preparation. The same goes for Larry Bird. There were many more athletic than him, but nobody worked harder, or had a stronger will to win.
