      Had to form my own opinion after watching your review ...Directors had a great movie the character growth only to fall to the absolute bottom..The Ending really messed up by the 19 th century I wanted to turn off the movie cause of the slavery had to man up The movie left me unsatisfied. ..Directors are gonna have to do a Snyder remake cause they really messed up ... Director s if you need help on your next movie Trust I Got You....🤔

      The movie depicted what happened to our ancestors during our American 400 yr Holocaust. It was an evil time & The Most High will avenge his people. The movie was good at documenting these evil acts which should make us continue to carry ourselves in a way that honors the legacy of what our ancestors endure for us, Shalom

    If they would have never shown that it was current times. Like no phone, no plane, nothing but just the whistle. It would have been better. And they could have had a huge twist at the end with her coming put into the crowd of people. They let out the plot from the start and shouldn't have at all. Poor execution

    I think what annoys me most is that for whatever reason everybody's so thrilled to see yet another slave movie. But ppl aren't criticizing the details of the film. Like the scene where they bring in more kidnapped black ppl to be slaves. HELLO it's 2020 why aren't these ppl shocked at what's going on? Why do they all have this look on their faces like well it's slavery, been here done that??? Just pissed me off.

      They weren’t shocked because they were still slaves mentally. Taking them back to the plantation put them back into physical chains but their mindset was so warped that they couldn’t tell the difference. The slave master says “I don’t know what luxuries you’re used to from wherever you came from.” The luxury is the present freedom of today. Yet that freedom is still tied to years of perpetuated mental slavery which is why they didn’t act shocked when they arrived to the plantation.

  • @janlet627
    @janlet627 3 ปีที่แล้ว +96

    The trailer is like Octavia Butler's Kindred but the reality is low budget, M. Knight Shyamalan's The Village. It feels like a bait and switch. The concept was interesting cuz folks love to imagine what they WOULD HAVE DONE if they lived back in the slavery times. But they were still out numbered and kidnapped with no idea where they were and not allowed to communicate with other "slaves"

    • @imjusthereforthecomments4159
      @imjusthereforthecomments4159 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They actually did a lot of communicating for not being able to communicate. She was alone in her room and could have visitors anytime she wanted like when the pregnant chick just went in there and was talking to her. They definitely could have rebelled at night especially since they really weren’t secured just closed up in their homes.

    When that cellphone rang, all the pieces instantly rushed together! I told my mother that it was a reenactment and realized that what I assumed was an approaching thunderstorm had actually been airplanes!!! I thought time travel was part of this film. Maybe inspired by Octavia Butler's book called Kindred. The dropped cellphone scene was ridiculous! And, they didn't have to kill off the brother so explicitly either! I wish that there had been scenes of Veronica's arrival and adjustment how she the brother made contact and planned their escape. Reunion scenes would've been nice too. The twist was simple yet still very surprising. I'd have enjoyed it more if the film had been made in a straight forward way.

      I see what you're saying but at the end of the day we didn't have any roles, movies, or even the ability to watch, direct, or be apart of movies about us. Then we finally get roles in movies about us and still having to be a stereotype. After that was just token minorities and statistics. The whole time black people complained. Then we start doing our own stuff and black people still complain. Talking about "Its not good enough" "its pandering" "I'm tired of black struggle movies" when regardless of what you're tired of its realistic from the time it portrayed until now it is realistic its ideas and stuff we had to and got to deal with currently. Stuff ain't always rainbows if anything girlfriends is more of a pander and problem to black people as opposed to this

      XRAYE Nen Thanks for your comment, but I still stand by my opinion and there’s nothing wrong with me “complaining “ as you put it about a piece of art. I still can have a preference. I can still be for my people and critical. I know when the movie is set etc. I’m talking as a collective of black film. Regardless of what is reality on and off the screen I can be objective and don’t have to like it. It was never about being not good enough, to me it was about broadening the spectrum. There are “white” films I think are whack or “I’ve seen this before”, and don’t dig it. Lastly it’s FICTION so the space for creativity is immense.😂😂 Emphasis on FICTION 😅

    I literally just finished watching it. And I too feel like this movie could have been so much more but in a different way. I wanted to know the back story of the guy who got axed. As well as the the young woman who hung herself. Like who was her baby daddy and was he looking for her? I would have liked to know how they broke her. She was a very strong black woman in the "flashback" but when we first meet her, she is broken. I would also like to know how they even came up with that horrible idea to start doing that in the first place. And what is ther process for pick people. Just so many questions.
    This could have easily been a t.v. series or a limited series.

    Brandon THANK YOU FOR THIS REVIEW considering many Are not pleased with this movie and a label of black Trauma porn is circulating...I particularly appreciate you including a spoiler portion & speaking on Antebellum with the twist in mind for potential viewers...not speaking of said twist does a bit of a disservice... (especially since so many are thinking of NOT watching it...it’s overall message seems to shed light of trafficking of black women...why there’s such a romanticization with old values of the confederacy/south...Plantations...tours.. the man (General)mentioned silencing loud mouthed blackies...affecting the ballot box...them being nowhere and everywhere...and strategically choosing influential black voices (ie. Veronica/Eden was an Ph.D holding activist, Eli a professor) affecting the masses. Even the sign(ie could just as well be a confederate statue) was bulldozed down in last scene**** no need for such things anymore in present day yet they still are HERE...”The past is not dead, it’s not even past”
    ...I’m relieved to see at least you could use your platform to NOT discourage people From watching Antebellum & saw good aspects of this movie. While I understand it’s hard to see what our people endured-out of respect to our ancestors...if WE CANT EVEN WATCH IT ...what a disservice we are doing to the blood and sacrifice and tears they shed as we are descendants of those who dared to survive.”

    I liked the movie myself. I do think that this could really happen if someone is bold enough and crazy enough. It was disturbing to see black folks punished for speaking up by putting them back slavery. But what was more disturbing is the thought/reality that white folks would pay money to go back to before the war time so they could experience slavery as a slave capture, overseer, confederate, and slave master persecutive. Also, Did they say in the movie why the captain was

I think the biggest thing with our movie audiences these days is that we dont like or cant understand anything metaphorical or different. Just like Tenet, ppl didnt like it because they didnt understand it. But there is a such thing as still enjoying a movie for what it is.... and ppl refuse to do that. @Ton Lok Of course not. The torture of black ppl in this movie is actually an aspect I forget about because when most ppl complain about the movie, their main complaint (from what Ive heard) is that the movie makes no sense and wasnt well written. I was married for many years and I remember when my wife would have her girlfriends over for a little get together... I would leave the house and go to a movie cuz those chicks would talk a lot of shit and it was never lady like. So that scene was actually very authentic representation of today's modern sexually liberated woman. Women don't whisper anymore they are loud and vocal about what they want. So in my opinion that fitted her character perfectly.

What common movie goers expect from horror is the supernatural and/or the unnerving sensation like something from the screen would come out and grab you long after you are done watching. Let's to back to the beginning of movies to the current era. Notice anything?
      Up till the current era, horror indeed had supernatural elements. Then there was this weird mix or psychological thrillers.
      Then we come to the era where people felt lie they HAD to explain EVERYTHING. Monsters were no longer real. Which is interesting, but slowly gets away from horror..it's really what is literally a psychological thriller.

    I didn't see the trailer. I just tried to watch it because Janelle is so pretty. I couldn't get past 20 minutes. I had no idea that someone was trapped in another time. For 20 minutes all I kept thinking to myself was that I would have killed myself as soon as I realized I was trapped in a hateful land like that. Like even if I was a pure white man, I would not have lived in an area where they treat animals like that. Clearly black people aren't animals but if you're a supremacist, you rate living creatures like: human, smart animal, dumb animal.
    But I would never treat a dog that refused to fetch the bone like people were treated in the movie. I just wouldn't have taken the dog with me and fed it at all. Live and let live.
    That said, after 20 minutes of the movie and without watching a trailer, I can clearly see why there's a BLM movement where a raging mob just bangs and breaks everything in sight. "Oh shit, see that car just driving down the street with a white person in it minding his own business? After watching Antebellum, I can clearly see that they hate my right to Express my empathy for black people and for that, I'm going to scream BLM while I bang on the car!"
    And why the other folk just expressing their empathy for living creatures would join in in banging on the car screaming BLM" until the other idiot in the car panics and for fear of their life, would just floor the gas no Matter if someone is standing there or not.
    The movie was too painful for me to watch. I have traumatic experience with certain people but I just stay away from them. I don't watch movies where they are being abused worse than a dog. I just won't be there friend no more.
    To me anything more is pure evil.
    Let me set my reminder to check later if TH-cam deleted my comment for not, "saying my name!"

    I agree. If the main character had, after her escape, gone around the country telling people everywhere what happened, then she was being chased by the bad guys to keep her mouth shut, THEN we would've had a movie to watch. What we got was the trailor. Uh-huh.

    SPOILER**
    I think the movie would’ve been better if it was a sci/fi horror film with time travel or multiple dimensions colliding. The present day slavery thing felt very lazy. Very disappointed. This movie was definitely written for a specific crowd in mind.

    I actually enjoyed the movie. I don't see this as a typical film about slavery. I felt the plot was very realistic and I wouldn't be surprised if something as sinister is happening present day. It absolutely is not the best movie ever, but it was profound and a good source of reference for the past heinous crimes of slavery.

    This film gave me quite a bit of anxiety when I was watching it. I liked it and Janelle delivered a wonderful performance.
