    Great review! Totally agree! There were missed opportunities but ultimately they got the point across and it’s pretty terrifying. Civil War reinactments are a real thing bad this is America so it is mot far fetched to think there would be those who would do this. Just look at various stories you hear in the recent news of teachers doing this to their students. It’s already a real problem.

    I’m so glad you did this review. This movie went way over people’s head. They were expecting jump scares, jokes, and entertainment. I don’t think people were watching to expel this amount of mental capital. It really saddens me because this movie was definitely written for black women most specifically in the most beautiful way. He masterfully sheds light on the type of micro aggressions black women experience from white women. How our spaces are constantly encroached on. He even brought up how they are raising their children to participate in a system that subjugates black people. They are complicit, not allies. There was a lot in this movie, but people were so focused on being entertained mindlessly. It wasn’t supposed to move in and out of reality and time smoothly. You were supposed to be jarred. That wasn’t bad directing, it was very intentional. That is how it feels being traumatized by the idolization of slavery in the present time where these statues, names, and symbols have no place.

      EXACTLY! This movie shows how a black woman, in particular, is actually hated for being in a state of SUCCESS. I think this is due to the fact of how enslaved African Americans came from no success and dominated and "CoULD Never Be" Successful but is NOW successful; Some people still don't like that for some reason. & The stronger tension of others (not of color) feeling intimidated by other races becoming successful ..especially POC is Strong today.

      You nailed it. Also people want to be spoon fed. There's a lot to unpack in this movie, including the coveting of her lipstick (wanting out full lips). Lots of things were packed into this movie, including a loving black family with dad present.

      I honestly disagree. Just to clarify, I am a white man, so sorry in advance if I miss something. I thought this movie might have been slightly offensive. Besides the lead role, all the other characters where either overdone stereotypes of black people, or banal depictions of racist white people. The "micro-aggressions" in this movie did little more than make me roll my eyes. Unlike Get Out, which I like way more, these aggressions were very blunt and not well incorporated into scenes, like the Robert E. Lee statue. Sorry for ranting and feel free to disagree.

    • @Mehki227
      @Mehki227 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ethanyoder2680 The expetiences that we bring to a movie, can inform how we react. For example, the encounter at the front desk at the hotel. I had the same experience in a little Georgia store on a trip traveling to Florida. (I was overcharged for a small toy, told the cashier who refused to listen to me. Brought the box up to show her the price. She just ignored me. I got my change back. Not saying how.) It wasn't until then that my sister and i picked up on the looks and non responses we were getting in the store. We were from California and NYC and hadn't experienced the Southern brand of racism before. The expression on the desk clerk's face brought back those memories. People complain about realism in this movie, but one's reality isn't someone else's reality.

  • @erauprcwa

    JUST finished watching the movie. There's a lot to process. I liked the movie and went into it without knowing much. I thought the ending was rushed. Almost like we went on a journey with the characters and then we barely get a payoff with the resolution. Some have mentioned "The Village", but I'm not upset by that, considering the messaging and subject matter of what the movie's plot was about. Interesting idea of some weird group taking a Civil War reenactment and making it real.
    I don't see the "all white people are racist" idea that was discussed. Like always, if someone gets offended by this, I feel that they have some deep seated insecurities that goes beyond a movie with a statement of white supremacy and slavery.

      I was off kilter which was the intent. They talked too modern. I was like what??? Then i thought she was dreaming. Sidibe was fantastic with the Beckys. Then the phone rang and I realized, of course, they were kidnapped. I watched it again to pick up the Easter Eggs. There is a comtrail.(sp?) in the sky at the beginning. So... I walked into this film fully knowing the plot... and I still left the film shaking. Like I was in total shock. If you run in reinactor circles of any time period, you will inevitably run into people like the villains of this film. This film terrified me, not because of jump scared, or the trauma inflicted (though the trauma deeply effected me)... but this film terrified me because I can absolutely see this happen in real life. I would not be shocked if someone told me that this was happening in the real world or based on real events... even though I know it's a work of fiction.

    I have to say I appreciate that you guys are focusing on the positive points of the film that you enjoyed and the symbolism you saw. Honestly you made points that I hadn't thought about when I watched this. I hated it and I will watch it again but I don't think my opinion will change much. I do have to say I disagree with some of your points, like the butterfly symbolism, you guys made an interesting point but I don't think the movie communicates any imperfection of the butterfly at all. The bloody butterfly on the cover seems more to just sell the horror genre imo.
    Also you say this is about a few characters so we won't see ALL the terrors that happen to the other people on the plantation. That would be more legitimate if this was a documentary and you couldn't control what happened to your subject, but in a fictional film there's no reason they shouldn't have given us at least one moment to communicate how truly awful this plantation was for these people. Still gonna like your video because like I said your points were interesting, but I think you're attributed your own clever ideas to a movie that doesn't deserve them :)

I wasn’t at all surprised that this wasn’t received well, this makes some white people uncomfortable and some black people mad but this IS a believable psychological thriller/horror concept to me. Slasher flicks of the 80’s, ghost films of the 00’s all that mess is played out. It’s really sad to see something so abstract not get the recognition it deserves because of race and America’s history of slavery.

    The trailer got me really excited to see Janelle Monáe in a scifi movie, but it's so much more chilling the kidnapped people are being held captive in a confederate re-enactment park because it reflects reality in that the horrors of systemic racism and the culture of racism and hate ingrained in many people that's very real in existence today. It can be read as a critiques of the disassociation that some people have of the inhumane atrocities of what certain imagery from the past represents in a visceral way. I agree with the suggestion made in this video review about how the film could have shown why the kidnapped people were targeted specifically, it could have been another avenue to examine racism and also humanize the kidnapped people some more even if it was shown through a montage. I feel like the dropped 911 call implied that Denton had people embedded there, the call was cut after Veronica identified herself and said she and others are at a plantation.

One evening you're partying with friends and the next evening someone is branding your back. I truly do not understand the people who say it is a mess. Maybe they can't fathom this type of thing happening but for me, itis an actual reality that could be especially when you think of the thousands of people going missing everyday who are never found. Great movie. 1 of the things that suprised me that none that talked about is that without race .... it is a straight up horror movie. Race shouldn't make a horror movie. Now add race. Black people especially connect with this movie on a personal level because we are the same race as the people oppressed in this movie. To us this is horrible... aka horror. So the fact that people think this movie isn't "Horror ", says a lot about the different races that don't find it to be so. To me horror is something so terribly scary that it almost can't be true... or in face is so terrible that it indeed can't be true... Is not Horror then what was this movie to you?

But the history was true and racism still does exist in the present. In South Georgia it was proven to occur. In Texas a police force was filmed using whips, although the Texas article stated that no body was whipped. But reality is reality and we cannot hide from it. Facing the truth and truly working together to fix the problem is important to keep incidents like these from occurring. What if this happened to you? Its sad to face head on.

But to be honest,, the thought of this happening, can be HORROR, terrible, just the thought. I think it was a message in it, several actually . I just think ppl r tired of the slavery movies, basically 🤷🏽‍♀️ which is understandable but this movie is food for thought! Bc it didn't go viral or u didn't hear about it, doesn't make it no more true or less than the Kennedy theories or FBI wire taps on all major leaders of color ( MLK, MLCLM X, BLCK PNTHRS, SAM COOKE etc) that was later killed! At the time, no one knew what the truth was or some didn't know for a FACT. IJS it wouldn't be the first time the government did a little damage control, tried hiding the truth especially around Election times! That shit will disappear like it never happened, that's the American way! This countries history is full of scandal, lies, cover-ups, inequality, craftiness, pure evil/cruelty 99% on the backs of ppl of color! Yea it could be used to distract n create more hate but that doesn't make any less true or far fetched! You as an individual need to be able to multi task by watching things like this n still being able to observe your surroundings while containing your anger n just be open minded to the possibilities, collect ur data n save😉 There isn't a limit to what these types of ppl will do, so educate yourself, stay aware, and be safe!✊🏾

    The thing is if you don't like a movie the first time around chances are you're never gonna watch it again 🥴🥴🥴
    Kuddos to you girls I could NEVAH!😂
    Also I heard the producer of the movie actually financed Us, but Jordan Peele himself had nothing to do with this movie. If that's true that means they sorta used Jordan's name to sell this movie.

    The best about the movie was that killer dress monet had on!!!😍😍😍 but the story was terrible!! No supernatural event, the black people know who they are and they just expect it, which makes the movie a 1time view for me.

    Why do I have to watch these movies more than once to get it? That makes it stupid to me. I didn’t like it the first time, I won’t watch it again to catch what I missed the first time. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

      You don’t have to watch it more than once to get it. We watched it once and got it BUT you pick up a lot more when you watch it a second time. The things we missed just gave extra information to the story. We love movies so watching them more than once is fun for us, but I totally get not wanting to do that! -C

      @imjusthereforthecomments4159 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CineChix they said the same thing about Get Out and Us. Watch it several times and you’ll see more symbolism. Those type of movies annoy me, it’s like they are purposely doing that so we will spend more money on them. Not only did the first part seem exploitative, the fact that critics and reviewers encourage us to watch it repeatedly which in turn boosts the movie makers profit, just seems doubly exploitative IMO.

    • @CineChix
      @CineChix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Imjusthere forthecomments I completely understand that. I personally don’t think the movies you referenced specifically are trying to force you to watch it more than once to increase profits. In this case, the rental is a 48hr one, so if you watch it twice within that time frame, you aren’t paying more than what was initially spent. Easter eggs have always been a fun part of movies (for some people) and it’s just a way to enhance the experience. I completely understand your frustration and can agree that a handful of movies may do that for the extra profit. -C

      If you subtract the racial aspect of the movie it's basically a movie about mass kidnapping of people and put in a Compound and assailants acting out an extreme fantasy... if a movie is too surface-level it's boring for me because I don't want to watch a movie that doesn't make me think.

    Personally, I'm upset for wasting my time watching this movie. It's just a bad movie, politically set aside. As for the twist, M. Night's " The Village" is masterpiece compared to this crap. I preferred "12 Years of Slave" for a stronger effect than this garbage of a movie.

    • @CineChix
      @CineChix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don Pesulima I definitely understand where you’re coming from. You’re totally right about the twist being the same from M Night’s “The Village” and it was nothing new and can understand it being a let down. Thank you for sharing your opinion! - J

      @@CineChix I'm sorry if I came across too aggressive. I was really looking forward to this movie based on the trailer. I was hyping up this movie. That airplane disappering clip from the trailer pissed me off after I finished watching this movie. I LOVE Janelle Monáe ever since I found her from "Moonlight". I blamed bad direction for her awful performance in this movie. I'm not upset because the twist is not new, the execution of the reveal lacked creativity that it let me down... Also I had to spend $20 for a disappointing experience. At least I could get a refund from watching in a movie theater and even then it cost less than $20.

    • @CineChix

      Don Pesulima no worries! Don’t apologize for expressing your opinion, it didn’t seem aggressive at all, maybe just passionate :). Since we had already seen the movie I think we were able to see it in a different light since we never saw a trailer before our first viewing that would taint our experience or if us false expectations. I was extremely disappointed in the trailer as well, it really marketed the movie as something it wasn’t and I 100% agree that they misled the audience. - J

    This movie is just terrible and half of it wasn’t even necessary. I watched it twice bc I watched it with different people and both times I thought “what was the point of this scene?” This movie tried to force so many concepts into one. I for one was super upset in the perspectives. As a mom, I’m not going to risk my freedom and see my child bc I want to put on a freedom jacket, wrap this 250 pound senator in a flag and dragging him to the burning shed. This isn’t empowerment, it’s just stupid. Same with the dinner scene. Being rude and a jerk to the hostess or guy that approaches is not empowering, it’s just an a hole thing to do. Yes, it was racist but the response was very stereotypical. The butterfly theme was just another unnecessary concept that was forced.

      @ashrain782 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But in django there wasn't a brave white hero? Like the entire movie is literally focused on the black dude being the hero? Antebellum was just not a very good movie, had a good theme and point but got it across terribly. It would be acceptable if half of the movie was actually realistic.

      @@ashrain782 I think the concept is realistic. You don’t think now or at some point I. The future wealthy white people can actually kidnap black people and rein-act this? I think it can happen. We don’t know. Just like in the movie, it was tucked away behind a civil war reenactmen.
