I adopted mine from a puppy rescue, she is an incredible dog. Super smart and very loyal, TONS of energy. She noticed that I would shoo the cat off the couch if she started clawing. If my dog sees the cat start to claw the couch, she'll nudge the cat off the couch for me! I didnt even teach her that lol!
The Kelpie actually does have Dingo, farmers used to tie out a bitch in heat to bring in the dingoes, to get a tougher and more resilient dog, and to bring them close enough to shoot
This dog will take on any other breed of dog no hesitation. As it’s main course would be large ram or cattle, no fear my fellow Americans they are extremely intelligent and understanding! Best dog you’ll ever own
Thanks Prawn Master as a fellow Aussie, how right you are. My boy is a “failed” big livestock Kelpie but an absolute dream with hens & baby chicks, ducks & the birds that frequent our yard. Love these damn dogs to bits!
Best minding dog I’ve ever had. No formal training. It’s almost as if she can read my mind. She’s 2 yr old now, and I think I could walk her through a crowd and she’d stay right by my side like Velcro. She is temperamental though. She’s 40lb, but my 80 lb lab tests her sometimes. It never ends well for the lab, because she gets face rolled instantly. I agree with the other commenter that this dog has no fear of anything but lightning/thunder. That turns her into a wimp quick. She crawls under the bed every time. Best/smartest dog ever.
The Australian Kelpie breed is split in two: there is the working kelpie, and then there is the bench (show) kelpie. The two strains are as different as two separate breeds. They also look different. Just google images "working kelpie" and "kelpie ch", and look at the difference in body shape, typical coat colours, and expression (and situations). The working kelpie looks confident, complex and much harder, and the bench kelpie looks more like a "little dog" breed in a medium sized body, a bit like a schipperke but kelpie sized. Working kelpies are varied in looks and can have many colours but black and tan or brown and tan (with the characteristic "eye brow" and cheek, chin, chest & leg markings) is by far the most common, whereas the bench kelpies are typically a monochromatic red, tan or black. Bench kelpies also tend to appear fluffier with "ruffed" neck coats. That's just the look, but of course the biggest difference is in the innate abilities and function - working instinct, energy level, focus, behavioural needs etc. The two strains are totally separate - they don't usually interbred, and belong to separate breed registries in Australia. Bench kelpie breeders are in the ANKC, and working kelpie breeders in the Working Kelpie Council of Australia. Most overseas (AKA not in Australia) kelpie breeders probably breed bench kelpies I would imagine, but in Australia the working kelpie is by far the most common, even as a pet (it doesn't always go well). Why is this important fundamental breed distinction not mentioned with a word in the video? It seems poorly researched
Thanks for the interesting additional information! However, the FCI does not make a distinction between working kelpie and show kelpie. Interesting that this will be so different in Australia. From time to time the videos will be revised, then I will add this additional information to the video.
@@retsaf1 no the Americans weren’t satisfied by having a Kelpie as their herding dogs as they don’t use the Kelpie to its full ability such as backing on the sheep & blind casting. The American farmer doesn’t like the way the Aussie farmer allows the dog to think for itself & go out of sight to round up the sheep & bring them back to the paddock, so they invented the Hangin’ Tree Cowdog. We’ll stick with the Kelpie.
@@retsaf1 thanks for the reply & update mate. I saw a couple of articles on the Hangin Tree Cow Dog & honestly didn’t get the reason for mixing the breeds; Australian Shepherd/Border Collie/Australian Kelpie + oh I cannot remember the other breed - Lurcher maybe? The Aust Shepherd not an Australian breed & the Border Collie while both excellent herding dogs do not have the stamina of the Kelpie. Some of our properties over here are the size of the state of Texas & I can tell you they by no means are pristine flat paddocks so you need a trustworthy, easy to maintain coat dog who is going to be out of your sight for a loooong time. One farmer on TH-cam in Utah actually said he doesn’t like the way the Kelpie works alone or the way that we Aussies do the blind cast, he likes to see his dogs, go figure. Look these are only a handful of complaints as I have read some fabulous reviews from American ranchers. I have seen many videos on the Kelpies rounding up some wild cattle over here & they get into the big nuggets, they are not too afraid to show the livestock who is boss. Sorry mate didn’t mean to ramble on there but I didn’t go much into my first reply & just wanted to shed some light on what I have seen on you tube & sorry as you can guess I have an absolute soft spot for our Aussie Kelpie. 😊
Kelpie reminds me of my labrador.. she was very true. Always used to fear lightning. Although appointed her with protection force got training fsv food was milk with oats and sweet chocolate candy later. But very nice homely pet used to love bones cooked
Provided they're getting enough exercise and stimulation they make excellent sofa dogs, they're hyper affectionate towards their family and love to sit with you, can't imagine trying it with a bored Kelpie with excess energy, that would be a path to sofa destruction.
I’m looking into dogs and right now the Kelpie is one of my favorite. Having trouble looking for a shelter/place to adopt. Do you have any places that you recommend (I live in America if that helps).
I only brush my kelpie sometimes during the summer to get rid of excessive fur (she still sheds tremendous amounts but that might be a result of the sterilisation). Dirt, however, just falls off as she dries up. People often ask what I do to keep her fur so shiny and fresh, by which I always reply: as little as possible! 😄 My kelpie surely does not like other dogs very much. Also children goes on her nerves (she has snapped at both my nephew and niece) but that is of course an individual trait. If you would like to WORK with your dog, more or less all the time, the Australian kelpie is just a perfect choice. I can't imagine owning another breed (well, perhaps a malinois sometime). Beware for the puppies though, they are a complete wrecking crew!!
Called what....Barbs, what??? We here in Australia call them Australian Kelpies, Kelpies or Mate. It has now been proven that Kelpies have been traced back to the Dingo, far enough not all lines. No they are not guard dogs but great alert dogs. Kelpies love being inside or anywhere with its human pack. Nuh, Kelpies hate to be fussed over & groomed, after running & working all day there is nothing better than jumping straight into the dam or water trough for a dip, no farmer over here walks around with a grooming kit for his Kelpie!!! Tired of hearing about Kelpies from overseas so called experts. You want to know about a Kelpie look up the numerous videos on TH-cam from Australia.
they have done dna on the kelpie .hardly any of them have dingo in them . and the ones that do are at most 3% dingo Now the Australian heeler well they have a shitload of dingo in them I have a kelpie cattle cross who actually looks like a dingo his mum was a red cattle dog and dad a red kelpie , so i have done heaps of research finding the origins of both breeds ,so I could explain to people why he looks like a dingo when they asked . 80% of people we meet ask if he is a dingo or has dingo in him I tell them he is cattle cross kelpie and he looks like a dingo because cattle dogs have dingo in them and he must have picked up a lot of the genetic traces or a genetic throwback as it is also called , happens in all species and breeds
Yes they are, as long as your dog has you for companionship & guidance you’ll both be fine. Hope you end up getting your Kelpie, good luck & love it & it will love you back for mnay
I rescued my kelpie while I was living in an apartment, trying to buy my first house... things fell through and we have been in that apt for 6 hrs, but soon I’m going to have a real house and yard for her!! Be careful, as kelpies can get bored when left alone for long periods, so they make their own fun... they love to explore...(garbages, shoes, pretty much anything not bolted to the floor 😂) So worth it though for their loyalty and intelligence!!
I’m 7 years old and I saw across red kelpie and red HEELR! I love kelpies!!!! So you know I might be able to get one since I live in Australia and they are related to a dingo but they are not cross by a dingo
There was resistance to acknowledging Dingo influence due to farmers hatred of dingoes but there is most definitely dingo in them, Collies don’t handle the heat as well in the drier inland environment, kelpies also have a more independent streak than collies
