And the dog was sitting in the middle of the room looking pleased with itself. Clearly the dog used eye on the guests without the guests noticing.
Gday from Australia. My old boy passed away last year. Whilst not trained for cattle or sheep, they make excellent companions and are extremely intelligent and sensitive. But, not a town dog. Jasper used to come with me everywhere on the farm and actually learnt to keep birds out of out crops. A small day for him was 20-30kms in the paddocks and behind the tractor. A big day was 70-80kms. But not even that would wear him out.

Kelpies make wonderful pets. Yes, they'd all rather be out herding stock, but not all of them can. Ours is tiny, only 16kg, her growth stunted by getting pregnant too early, so the farm she was born on gave her away. She's got "the eye" so bad, when we go for a walk, all she does is lock eyes on me, waiting for me to shout "go!" so she runs off up the track at high speed (we clocked her at 40km/h) before coming back toward me with her eyes locked on in that classic Kelpie pose. It's like living with a slightly autistic athlete, a deeply loving one. She lies between me and the wife when we're watching TV in bed. We cuddle so much, my wife calls her my girlfriend. One of the local dog-walkers has a red Kelpie that likes to circle around ours when she's in her locked-on pose. Her name is Mathilda - "Tilly".
I got a Kelpie from a foster home. He is about 9 months old. Mac learns everything very quickly - amazing. This guy loves to run before, during and after his morning 3 mile walk. He will run in the yard subsequent to the walk - lots of energy. The dog does not like scolding of any kind so, I recommend keeping an even keel during training. And repitition can be rejected if not new material. I am not disappointed at all. Stay in control and it'll be alright.
Have 2 male Australian Kelpies in my home. They are growing in popularity as sheep dogs in Scotland and are extremely popular in Wales. Very intelligent dogs, don't need much training, they pick up commands and cues really quickly. I can't imagine having any other breed as my Kelpies are as intelligent as say a 4 year old child. They understand full sentences, very independant and are excellent with children. As with most comments here, they are working dogs and need lots of exercise, the energy levels of a Kelpie are endless. We have other Kelpies working with sheep on the farm and the males will pull down a sheep or cattle if they have to. They have great balance and work well on and off the quad bike. All in all, they make excellent companions and working dogs.

Cold climate sheep i'd probably choose have at least one border collie, but warm to hot/arid climates like ours though the kelpie reigns supreme. However, I would hide his favorite toy for him in the house, which helps keep his brain active and him calmer. They are great working dogs and high drive. You would be heavily mistaken to assume that Australia is only a sheep country @ 2.03, and that these dogs are too mild for cattle. I have seen generations of these working dogs pull fully grown cattle to the ground.
"Bite in the face." This is exactly how my kelpie ended up with a rescue group. He was living with a family that had kids and he would nip/bite at them in the face. I've had him for six years now in a kid-free home and he has been wonderful. I do have to keep an eye on him when kids are around especially if they are rambunctious and excitable. As long as everyone is calm he doesn't feel the need to make them calm down by biting at them. We lived in an apartment for a while and as long as he got a daily walk he was great indoors the rest of the day. But he clearly is not as driven as these working line dogs. Thank you for highlighting these great dogs!
So unfortunate the research wasn't done by his previous family to know that would be an issue. Any working dog that doesn't have a 'job' will take to working and herding its family out of instinct and a need for an outlet. I'm glad you found him ❤️
The Australian Kelpie is an eye dog that wasn't trained to bite or nip. Most people can get their dogs to work cattle without biting. Never had biting issues with ours. I've never seen a Kelpie in Australia bite an animal- cow or sheep. But ours does "herd" in her own way. If we are together and one person leaves than she tries to bring us back- emotional manipulation is her best strategy. If you have one as a pet though be prepared for a lot of cleaning. As they are outdoor dogs, they have a double coat to help with the weather- that sheds frequently
i had a kelpie that was not a working dog . you just need to give them something to do . mine would go under the car if the kids got too much for him and he was a fantastic dog / companion until he died at 17 .
We have a 15 year old kepie named chloe she is a great family pet she is very gentle and has never attacked anyone we have had she since she was a puppy she is a great dog
A year ago we got a rescue that was supposed to be part lab and part border/Aussie, but she looks just like the Black and Tan kelpies shown here, and has this same temperament (super smart, super friendly, loves to play chase). She is the most wonderful dog.
I have a beautiful Kelpie, She is my miracle. She is 10 months old and very smart, she has her own personality and I love her so much. She is my first dog and she is one of my best decisions of my entire life. (The other one is my black and white cat :)) Regards from Hungary :)
This lady knows the breed inside and out and will school you. I feel like taking out a pen and pad to take notes. Will need to watch this about 5 times over to fully understand all of it. Very educational.
TheAlmightyClipse sure why not. Well Australia is actually mostly cattle not sheep. The Kelpie is bred for both. The Kelpie when bred correct they should be confident and stubborn. They should be mostly heading and low tail end force. They should be able to walk up to the nose of your stock and bite it, contradictory to what she believes. She also shouldn’t be getting many not wanting to work if she’s breeding right. If your kelpie doesn’t fight you on how to do things for the first 2 years it’s not bred well. We send our dogs off where we can’t see them for a long time and we can’t have a dog that can’t do the job itself without commands. If you want a biddable dog but a border collie
@@jordanbowey4175 Totally agree. As an Aussie I am learning as much about Kelpie breeds because I recently bought a Kelpie X shepherd, and in my short education on the Kelpie breed even I can see her lack of knowledge of the breed.
I’ll never forget going to see a friend who had just got a new Kelpie, he kept racing pigeons, the Kelpie tried to herd the pigeons while they were flying. He told me just after he brought the Kelpie home, as a 10 week old pup, it was trying to herd ants! it was a very very smart dog. Btw, a Kelpie saved my brothers life when we were kids, by herding a large snake away from him, putting itself between the snake and my brother.
I have a kelpie mix named Angie. She's such a sweetheart!! She has so much character and has so much fun playing with our older dog Wyatt, whose a pitbull-bulldog mix. Wyatt had been needing a younger dog to play with since our old dog Duke passed away. They are such a great duo!!
Yay, I've been wanting this forever so thank you! Kelpie's are absolute angels. Black dingoes look just like them. I live in the town where Red Dog was born 💖
We had what we and the vet and us think was a red kelpie show up on our doorstep in a terrible storm many years ago, she was an older dog. We put up signs and placed a found add in petfinders and the paper, but nobody claimed her. She was tolerant of 3 small kids, good with cats and our other dog. We had her for several years. We still miss her, a calm, sweet dog who was grateful and kind.
I love my kelpies. I have an all black Lady and an all red boy. Best, smartest, most loyal dogs I've ever known. I've worked with many dogs for years and the Kelpie is my favorite by far. The breed is so impressive.
They’re very smart dogs, seemingly working out what’s required themselves, almost like they train themselves too. Plus very friendly, if a Kelpie can’t make you smile no one can.
I wish you could meet my kelpie collie mix Cash. He’s the craziest, nuttiest, smartest and sweetest dog. He certainly keeps me going every day. He’s a great deal of work, but he rewards us for that work by giving us great love in return.
Hey from Australia .. You are correct with the dingo mix !! History shows Scottish sheep dog was brought out and breed with dingo and wahla ... Our amazing Kelpies were created !! We use our kelpies for cattle work in Australia and as our breed line has matured they have the bite needed for cattle .. So happy I came across your channel
10 years ago i got my first dog. from the berlin shelter, they said it is a terrier mix. so the first year was hell, till i understood: this is not a terrier, it is a kelpie! the test proofed it, so i changed our lifestyle, all the problems left after understanding what a special breed he ist :) his name is monkey, he loves climbing, has a dog friend that loves to be herded and we all accepted his judgy personality. not even pet doctors know the breed here... so they are allways impressed how muscular this futbaby is :D
I was so excited to see this uploaded. And THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. Kelpies were used to make the ACD, so I love them. So happy to learn more about them. Thank you so much!
If you are talking about Queensland Heelers you are wrong! The Kelpie came out of the English wire haired terrier. The Queensland Heeler, acd is NOT the breeds name, came out of 2 dogs, one called Hall's Heeler, the other Timmins Biter. Kelpies are in no way designed for cattle, Heelers were bred to have a much stronger bite, and have a more stubborn attitude.
Thank you so very much, My dog is a rescue, , how she is here is a mystery. You have explained so much , she has a forever home 🏠 I'm We love her very much 💯💖 🌟, she's a very good dog, and always helps me, we have a few acers she , love it here Arkansas ❤️💯
I have one of those "non herding" Australian Kelpies that Lori said might make a good pet. He does BUT he requires special understanding. He still needs the right kind of mental stimulation, he still has the hard wired motor patterns of these dogs with "eye." He's a strange mix of sensitive and resilient. He will NOT forget a bad experience at times. You really have to understand these are not "pets" as in the common doodle or retriever, or even a pet bred GSD. They are sweet and amazing, but very particular at times. THey live for activities with you and you have to provide that for them to be happy. There ARE kelpies that are "show line" kelpies, bred as dog show stock in Australia for decades. Interestingly enough it's harder to find these in the USA than the original working lines, but if you want a kelpie companion, these are better suited in general and can also perform in agility and many other casual dog sports. I hope people try to import more of these and create the demand for them, leaving most of the working dogs alone. There will always be individuals in working dog litters that are more suitable as active companions and sports dogs, but a more popular "demand" for working cattle and sheepdogs among the widespread public is not desirable. Lori did a great job, but I do wish she had not brushed over certain health concerns such as Cerebellar Abiotrophy. It's believed to be an autosomal recessive and that it mostly shows in pups early on, so I think a lot of breeders give it little thought, but in truth there are some late onset forms, and some kelpies get other forms of Ataxia. I don't know the percentage of HD in the breed but it does exist, and there is some Progressive Retinal Atrophy in the breed. Again, I don't know the percentage but it's there.
Can confirm, I have one as a house dog and she is awesome but if i didnt take her running over 50km a week she would go crazy quickly. Super smart and well natured but lots of energy.
Thank you for such a lovely insight into your dogs. From here in Australia it’s good to see Kelpie’s doing what they were meant to be doing. They are so much happier after hard day working stock then after swim in a water trough than they are sitting on a lounge wearing a bandana. They really are wonderful dogs. I see the rake in the round yard and recognise the method having been to a clinic by the master myself here in the Hunter valley in NSW. All the best for Xmas from Australia
@@brasschick4214 cool to know. I as waiting on a German Shepherd X Kelpie pup, ready to come home in 6 weeks. My last dog was a full German Shepherd passed away early this year, but I have not had any experience in Kelpie dogs. Can't wait till my puppy can come to his forever home.
In Australia heaps of people have kelpies as pets. I've not heard of an Australian kelpie nipping at kids, but in Australia they have always been bred primarily for sheep. They are however high drive pets who enjoy either being with the owner most of the time or frequent long walks and mental stimulation like obedience, agility and games in general. Also the genetic studies have shown there is dingo in the breed.
People do keep cattle in Australia. I've spoken to a few people who use them for cattle there but yup, mostly sheep. I also think not every Australian even thinks they need more bite just because of cattle. Someone, I forget who, wrote a wonderful article asking whether or not more aggression was better, even for cattle. Some say cattle ignore "eye." I really don't know. Also there are so many different breeds and hybrids of cattle, it could depend on what you raise. I see a lot of ads for "bark and bite", and it's not just in the USA. Don't know what else to say. I dream of going to the Casterton festival in June so I can speak to many breeders and ranchers at once and see what's up.
Personally I've used them for cattle sheep and goats, but the dogs I've used have always had to work best with sheep, they rarely bite anything. They do hold goats but that's because we catch feral goats (aka they are properly wild). It's really depends who's bred them for what purpose and how they use them.
I have a kelpie that likes to track wild animals, go for long walks and play with a ball or do some nosework. Only when he was a puppy he bit us in the face but since he grew older that desire dissappeared. What im trying to say is that they can be excellent pets as long as you give them what they need
Most informative video I have seen that gave info on not just Kelpies, but the Border, and Cattle dogs as well. Clearly explained the strong eye, wearing method and loose eye. Thoroughly enjoyed this video
That ability to read a flock is what made Kelpie, the original kelpie, a legend. It was fortunate that she was acquired and trained by a man who saw the value in her because most Australian farmers will shoot dead any dog they thought had dingo in them.
I've got a kelpie and that strong eye comment couldn't have been more true; shes so smart and gets so fixated when she's in her zone learning, playing, whatever. Gorgeous dogs
Kizzie is coming up 22 yrs ld n I assure you my own experience is She started to get weird around 16 or 17 n she has always n still does keep me busy n outdoors x
not always. they have their preferences. my mate has sheep and cattle and uses kelpies almost exclusively. he did have a border collie at 1 stage. so some pups are a mix 😊
I have a kelpie cross lab and she does not bite she is very gentle and will only lick, this might be because she is half lab but she has a lot of kelpie traits. She is very energetic so we take her for a walk/run everyday plus she looks like a kelpie. We love her to bits she is gorgeous.
Because they are used for jumping over sheep, even walking on the backs of sheep, they have great balance. You can see these dogs on skateboards and surfboards it's amazing
My Kellie is pet. She doesn't work, she is very active and is a wonderful pet and companion. She's very affectionate and very intelligent. She doesn't need to work and she's my second Kellie so I know what they want. The first lived to 17 so she's right on health and life expectancy. You must keep her active , we go to the park with a ball twice a day. I talk to her like she is human. She understands a great deal, sometimes complex phrases. Mine is smaller than most, 17 kilo,s , no idea pounds. She can jump my height without much effort!.
I have a kelpie x Greyhound but mine made a great pet. He was bred for pig hunting but when he's not hunting (which is about 8 months out of the year) he's a house dog. tHey are very smart, it was easy to train him as a pet AND a pig hunter. He can jump incredibly high, run for miles & yes, when we are at sport trainings and he's there he'll try round up the team everytime 😂
Kelpies can make great city pets, but if you don't find something for them to do they will find something to do and you might not like the results...😁 Making them a part of the family and including them in almost everything you do and good daily walks with plenty of time in an off-lead area is normally more than enough to keep your Kelpie happy and contented...❤️
I rescued a pup that was labeled as a heeler mix due to one of her sisters resembling a Queensland heeler. But she has the body and coat of the kelpie a red and tan! With white socks and tan speckles from the heeler!
Such crosses (blue heelers, red cattle dogs, kelpies) are really common in Australia. Working dogs are bred with regard for temperament and instinct with almost no regard for how a dog should "look". About half of the blue heelers I see have colouring that clearly indicates some kelpie in their heritage. A lot of the kelpies I see have bodies so stout that there must be cattle dog in their heritage. If I were you I wouldn't hesitate to own something like a heeler kelpie cross if you live the sort of lifestyle that would make you confident in owning a purebred dog of either variety. As I say though, in the working lines farmers won't hesitate to cross a good cattle dog with a good kelpie with a specific temperament goal in mind. For instance they might have a good but nippy cattle dog so they'll try to temper the nipping by crossing it with a calm but good herding kelpie. Such crosses happen for countless reasons. The only thing I wouldn't do is buy a dog from show lines. As soon as appearance is valued over temperament breeds get ruined.
Awesome video on Kelpies, Australian Cattle Dogs tho Australian Cattle Dogs are still the #1 breed from Australia for me. Can you try and do Blue Lacy's next? They're an amazing, unheard of breed.
I have a kelpie that was given to me by a friend. She was probably 6 weeks old and she looked like a little bear. Her paws were huge and her body was like 7 inches long with little 3 inch legs. Shes all black with white scarf under her chin. I thought she was gonna stay small but she kept eating like a horse. Even my 80 pound blue heeler was taking notice of this little tasmanian devil. Thats what she was. She was like a little devil. She would attack my feet and my uncles Chihuahua. And the more she grew is when i realized i had a kelpie.
Kelpies & cattle dogs do very well in Ca and in the south west of the U.S. because the climate there is very similar to Australia. I think Border collies work better in cold states like Montana or other western states. But how good do Belgium Moline do in hot weather ? I know they are better than German shepherds. 🐕🤠
Mals do pretty well but need to be conditioned to the heat. Also there are smooth haired border collies. Not sure but I would think they would do better than the shaggier Border Collies.

Just the best cow I have ever had
Have some people tell me she’s a Helpie
You would be heavily mistaken to assume that Australia is only a sheep country @ 2.03, and that these dogs are too mild for cattle. I have seen generations of these working dogs pull fully grown cattle to the ground.
I know right?
To hear her tell it you'd think the Kelpie had never met a cow until she introduced them.
Exactly
Bloody yanks lol
yep my neighbor uses one for cattle
Sheep country is NZ mate

I'm glad you found him ❤️
Don’t get a working dog if your not going to work it! Humans fault.
I used to own a Kelpie - One of the best (although - workaholic breed). Amazing, brilliant breed.
Kelpies are as my amazing!!!
I have a beautiful Kelpie, She is my miracle. She is 10 months old and very smart, she has her own personality and I love her so much. She is my first dog and she is one of my best decisions of my entire life. (The other one is my black and white cat :)) Regards from Hungary :)
greatest dogs on earth
I love my kelpie. Her name is Rocket and she’s so smart and sweet and loving. She’s very active and she loves our sheep
This lady knows the breed inside and out and will school you. I feel like taking out a pen and pad to take notes. Will need to watch this about 5 times over to fully understand all of it. Very educational.
DS Ds I live in Australia and she hasn’t got half the idea she thinks she does
No she doesn't
@@jordanbowey4175 So fill us in then, know it all
TheAlmightyClipse sure why not.
Great to see healthy working dogs!
Great dog! The grandma seems cool too
I love my kelpies. I have an all black Lady and an all red boy. Best, smartest, most loyal dogs I've ever known. I've worked with many dogs for years and the Kelpie is my favorite by far. The breed is so impressive.
I have a Kelpi Husky mix. Looks like a kelpi, big like a husky. Loves to run, take him on along our bike rides
My kelpie is called cash as well . Im in qld
You have explained so much , she has a forever home 🏠 I'm We love her very much 💯💖 🌟, she's a very good dog, and always helps me, we have a few acers she , love it here Arkansas ❤️💯
hello from Australia!
My first dog was a kelpie named Maggie. She was a sweet girl with the heart of a lion.
I'm getting a germanshepherd x kelpie cross next month. I'm so excited! My two favorite breeds together.
Update needed, How’s that working out?
Hope it is working out well. My family’s first dog was a German Shepherd X Kelpie called Sheba. Best dog ever, she was amazing.
I agree our kelpie lives with cats and rodents and he’s never bitten or herded them.
@@veganpxie our kelpie tries to herd our cat and nips at her ankles never aggressive though it's more like a game
scientific my ass what they tested a few kelpies and came up with that assumption
I love this breed
I came here after watching movie love and monsters...what an amazing dog breed ❤️❤️
This is incredibly informative and beautifully spoken. Excellent mini-documentary!
I have a kelpie that likes to track wild animals, go for long walks and play with a ball or do some nosework. Only when he was a puppy he bit us in the face but since he grew older that desire dissappeared. What im trying to say is that they can be excellent pets as long as you give them what they need
Tough dogs never really run out of energy during the day
Most informative video I have seen that gave info on not just Kelpies, but the Border, and Cattle dogs as well.
If you want a cattle dog get a blue heeler. Farmers in Australia that farm sheep and cattle usually have a kelpie and a heeler
not always. they have their preferences. my mate has sheep and cattle and uses kelpies almost exclusively. he did have a border collie at 1 stage. so some pups are a mix 😊
They’ll bite 🤣
My kelpie baby girl comes from working dogs, its in her DNA. She's always herding my big boy :-) so very intelligent. Just amazing.
I have a kelpie but she never worked with sheep or cattle a day of her life. She’s a sweet girl and we love her.
My kelpie is my best mate such an awesome dog ! Smart sensitive and everyone loves him 🐕
Respect she has been working with cattle dog breeds for 35 years, she must know their nature like the back of her hand
I love watching a dog doing what it was bred to do.
It takes a lot of breeding to get to this point of domestication.
Haven’t even started the video but I jumped this notification immediatly!
Beautiful dogs 🐩
Great video! I love the herding breed videos you do.
I collect from a farm every night, they have 2 brown Kelpies, lovely dogs!
Great video as always. Thank you so much for the quality of your documentaries !
I have a kelpie cross lab and she does not bite she is very gentle and will only lick, this might be because she is half lab but she has a lot of kelpie traits. She is very energetic so we take her for a walk/run everyday plus she looks like a kelpie. We love her to bits she is gorgeous.
Really enjoyed this episode! She sounds like a very knowledgeable with working dogs.
Nice interview and well made video.
i have a kelpie cross dingo - smart, sly, gentle and beautiful - cheers from Australia.
I feel like Australia is not just a sheep country lol. There’s quite a bit of cattle.
This woman is on point
Awww what a great dog breed. Thx for posting! 😀🐕
Been waiting for this one!
Because they are used for jumping over sheep, even walking on the backs of sheep, they have great balance. You can see these dogs on skateboards and surfboards it's amazing
3:11, what a beautiful dog
Fantastic work, Zeke!! I love all your hearding videos!
Wish i could post a picture. I love my kelpie!
excellent photography and story telling. great work!
They look so great
My favourite dog breed.
Kelpies can make great city pets, but if you don't find something for them to do they will find something to do and you might not like the results...😁
Making them a part of the family and including them in almost everything you do and good daily walks with plenty of time in an off-lead area is normally more than enough to keep your Kelpie happy and contented...❤️
My baby is very smart and strong.
She has two big pittbull siblings to play with on a half acer, she is just amazing..
8:22 the sheep was pooping 😅😅 omg 😂😂
this was dope....
I got my ACD from a family who got him from a farm. He is a very intense dog for sure. It’s been interesting and challenging
Australia is mainly a cattle country. Sorry but I think you are mistaken. Growing up on farms. Kelpies are amazing with cattle.
I rescued a pup that was labeled as a heeler mix due to one of her sisters resembling a Queensland heeler. But she has the body and coat of the kelpie a red and tan! With white socks and tan speckles from the heeler!
Speckling is hallmark of Cattle Dog almost infinitely and cross progeny Lawrie
Hey there. ABC Australia. Look up muster dogs. Hats off lass
Beautiful dogs. What is your opinion on the heeler kelpie cross? Thank you
Such crosses (blue heelers, red cattle dogs, kelpies) are really common in Australia.
@@bull3eye890 thank you for you knowledge it's much appreciated.

The cowboys need Australian cattle dog
I have a kelpie mix dog think it might be border collie. Super intelligent and incredible athlete.
@Damian Gutierrez Australia like America has different climates depending on location. It's a continent not some small country.
I have a gsd hates the heat my kelpie loves it. Gsd thrives in cool to cold
