The first game is one of my faves of all time. It’s just such a chill and fun game that doesn’t make you rip your hair out. I’m glad the Saturn version got a translation, which gives me another reason to play through again at a higher difficulty with the extra stages. I still haven’t been able to wrap my head around VH2. It just feels frustrating since I haven’t been able to adjust to that dual turn system. I’m certain there is a right way to play, it just isn’t obvious.
theres just something about Ash Lambert that has stuck with me my whole life. the music of the first game. The Characters Kane and Hell spites. Magnus, Zoot. idk the first game has that special place in my heart and will always be my prefered game in the franchise. great review!
Hahahaha, man really? I remember being 11, and the clerk at Gamestop straight-up recommended we pick up Vandal Hearts 2 upon release. To be fair, we were in there ALL THE TIME buying RPGs when we had money haha.
@@radicaldreamersteve5743 yea, it was weird. The guy was a dork. I found Gamestop pretty liberal in that sense, recommending GTA 3 etc. to parents for their kids.
im glad you think vandal hearts 2 ost is one of the best. its one of my favorite OST of all time. Xenogears and vandal hearts 2 are my top games of all time. dont get me wrong i love vandal hearts 1 too but 2's story hits way harder.
This is a series I have always wanted to play, and I've considered getting the second game lately (I'd probably stick to just the better of the two games because of back catalogue and time, at least for now). Will def consider this in the future though, and I would like to do more PS2 content. Adore that console.
These games are highly underrated. Personally I think the first one had the better story and game mechanics. But the second one had better music, and I liked how you could customize your characters. Sadly Vandal Hearts: Flames Of Judgment is very meh. I've been saying for YEARS that these games deserved HD Remaster.
Clint gave me a mental breakdown. From the start, Clint was always terrible. Constant misses, and he rarely ever counter attacked. I constantly tore my hair out, baffled by his uselessness. I nicknamed him "Clumsy Clint", and I would mock his every move with play by play commentary. Somehow it made me feel better to humiliate his character. "Here he comes folks. Clumsy Clint is stepping up to the plate. Not much to be expected from this clutz. Here's the swing. NOTHING but air folks! Step aside Clint, let literally anyone else take your place." Then it happened. The party arrived in a village full of cursed villagers. They were all frenzied and very aggressive. Armed with rakes and pitchforks, they weren't exactly threatening however. The objective was clear. Leave the villagers alone, and take care of the fiends cursing them. They were innocent after all. Clint steps forward, and I say "Make yourself useful Clint. Go foraging for hidden items while the big boys take care of the fiends. And for the love of god, don't die..." Just then, it was as if something snapped inside Clint's brain. His pupils dilated, he went completely emotionless. A cursed villager swings his rake at Clint, and like a flash of lightning, Clint dodges and immediately counter attacks. His blade twirling in his hand before he swings, Clint lets out a thunderous roar as he slashes the villager from nape to naval. Critical hit! Blood sprays the area, and the villager is dead before his body falls to the ground. Another cursed villager, one of the village elders, slowly approaches Clint. I'm left speechless from what just happened. I mouth the words "Stay back!" But it's too late. The feeble old man swings his cane, only to have it violently deflected out of his hand. The last thing he hears is the piercing grunt coming from Clint, as Clint valiantly strikes him down. "No! Clint! We have to leave them alive!" I ordered! "These villagers know not what they do!" But it was all for naught. Clint was gone. What stood before us all was a demon. One by one, the villagers fell to Clint's thirst for bloodshed. The blood curdling screams of the innocent can still be heard in the late night breeze. I didn't dare say another negative thing about Clint for the rest of the journey.
Hahahahaha, this is priceless. I wish I could give you an award for the entertainment. Clint was actually my heaviest hitter for a while because he was my only guardsman on my last playthrough. Maybe you had a cursed copy of the game or had a character trolling you through the 4th wall 😉.
@@radicaldreamersteve5743 I always favored my ranged attackers, so Diego was easily my MVP. As for the copy of the game being cursed, I wouldn't doubt it lol. I bought it from a decrepit old lady's garage sale. She didn't move or speak. She just sat in her chair as she watched her grand children sell everything. I'm convinced she was a witch who traded her voice for evil magic abilities lol.

It is def the more pick up and play game, and the unique win conditions were awesome.
2 if the genres best undoubtedly. I plan on playing through them again at some point in the future.
You're not missing much with the PS3/360 sequel.
loved them both, great review and thanks for this Steve! :)
Cheers!
I had to get my Mom to come with me to rent the first one from Blockbuster because of its maturity rating thanks to the gushing blood. I was 15 lol.

We can be friends. VH2 is one of my absolute favorite games in the genre, probably a top 5.
Do you like final fantasy tactics?
@@nathanpabon4553 absolutely love it, but I have not played it in a long time.
Ooooh, if you liked/played them before, try your hand at a Dark Cloud retrospective.

That would be the day. Suikoden getting HD remasters does mean Vandal Hearts has a small shot.

I played it, but that time it was japanesse translated. so no idea on the story telling.
Did you play the Saturn version then?
This game looks a bit like Ogre Battle
That is admittedly not a comparison I was expecting at all. You mean just graphically?
