    Very interesting to hear a fresh opinion from someone who never played a 32x before. You are spot on, had Virtua Racing, Star Wars or Chaotix been released on the Saturn (as it was probably originally intended), they would have wiped the floor with their 32x counterparts. BTW, what was the criteria for choosing those top 10 games if you had never played them before? Most of those games are indeed the best the console has to offer, but I rarely see Metal Head on any list of best games. Try instead Pitfall or Mortal Kombat 2, those were solid ports.

    Decided the 30th anniversary of this console was good enough reason to finally try it and make a video on it. It's weird that I like Final Fantasy 2 more than Final Fantasy 1. Liking FF2 comes down to whether you like the leveling system or not, and I love it. FF3 takes what 1 and 2 did and combines them into the best FF game for the NES. Ranking the games I've played so far from worst to best, I'd rank them as 1, 2, 3, and 4.

    As great as Shining Force 2 was at the time, Growlanser eventually took what it did and did it even better(Growlanser 1, 3 and 4 have fully explorable worlds plus heavy political plots and even full blown dating sim elements that actually influence the ending and the battles throughout the game). Growlanser completely perfected the blending of RPG and SRPG and the real time strategy combat is more fun than the more basic turn based strategy combat with very limited options. Without Shining Force I don’t think Growlanser would have existed though.

    • @radicaldreamersteve5743
      @radicaldreamersteve5743 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@westonmeyer3110 Thanks for the input. I really need to try Growlanser, and Growlanser Generations on PS2 (first two games?) is on my list of games to try. I will only slightly push back and say that the charm of Shining Force for me is, in part, the simplicity. Shining Force 2 is just so pick up and play compared to many games in the genre, even with the exploration elements added. Shining Force 3 has a much deeper story that is also more political in nature, though the ending cannot be altered as far as I know. Maybe this is just nostalgia talking for me, but Shining Force 2 always feels cozy to play, and I do feel like the simplicity could be seen as a strength or a weakness.

    • @westonmeyer3110
      @westonmeyer3110 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@radicaldreamersteve5743 Growlanser Generations is actually Growlanser 2 and 3. Unfortunately Growlanser 1 was never localized despite being arguably the best one in the series. Growlanser 4 is great though and it was finally localized for the PSP. Edit: I also didn’t mean to belittle Shining Force. I definitely understand the appeal of simplicity as my favorite game series is Dragon Quest. Personally though I need a little bit more as far as gameplay goes for my SRPGs. It’s fine for Dragon Quest to have basic attack and defense commands because battles go by quickly but when you are fighting 20 minute battles on a grid it gets really stale to have units with no differential abilities, and basically just a couple different ways to use the “attack” command for every single “class”. It was great that Shining Soul showed that SRPGs don’t have to be just anime chess but the gameplay in the battles clearly suffered because the creator didn’t like SRPGs and the limited town exploration even in Shining Soul 2 doesn’t make up for it imo.

    I miss when games could be 1 specific genre. It feels like the popular trend nowadays is to have an action game with light stealth elements, RPG level systems and all of it feels half-baked. I also miss when games got to the point and weren't filled with so much fluff. You got to have a tutorial teach you basics despite most games having the exact same controller layout being a FPS or TPS and you don't unlock the really cool stuff till about half way through. That one seems like a good amount of blame should go to gamers, as they will complain about the quantity louder than the quality.

    I feel like part of my problem at least is that growing up I could essentially play any game I wanted to try, however now there's so many games I want to check out & not enough time. Most recent example being Visions of Mana, I just was watching gameplay a few weeks back & thought to myself "who am I kidding, I'm never playing this". Now I may end up playing it eventually, but the sentiment was that if I want a game like that I've got Tales of Arise & many more similar games that I already own. Also if I'm being true to myself I'm not in the mood for something quite as wholesome anime vibes at this moment, that'll change one day but unless it's pixel art I want something a bit grittier. Also I personally preferred 16/32-bit era of RPGs as they usually were shorter in length.

    The performance was better in a lot of the older games. Around 2010-2015 something happened where sub 30fps became acceptable. In modern games they are often very sluggish and slow to respond. Input lag and bad framerates in newer games makes me enjoy older games a lot more. Games used to be balanced between looks and performance now the performance seems completely ignored. Every once in a while a new game like Astro Bot comes along that looks like it might actually control well.

    Modern gaming sucks. Its become a mainstream machine and is no longer niche or nerdy, which is why games today are all the same. No wow factor anymore either. People still benchmark their PC's with Red Dead 2 , Shadows of the Tomb Raider and other old games. No new wow factor you got with every generation in the 90's.

    I had an NES then SNES then N64. That was my path. I trusted Nintendo because back then they were the "go to" company. Of course my friend had a Sega Genesis and I got to play it and later my friends got a PS1 so even if I didn't have the console, I could still experience it. I did like the N64 because the graphics were just amazing, however looking back, I would prefer the PS1 controller over the N64 controller any day. But you have to understand that were consoles and games of their times. Many genres that we know today, were not even established back then. And while some games aged very well (Chrono Trigger) other games not so much. But thanks to flash carts and such, anyone who is competent enough can sill make new games for the systems. I'm a console gamer rather than a PC gamer specifically because I like the high compatibility that consoles provide. I like the idea of just putting in a cartridge or disk and playing a game. Back in the 1990's PC gaming was difficult. Time and time again, I would buy a game then try to install it only to find out the game wouldn't run because the machine wasn't powerful enough.

      @@radicaldreamersteve5743 as a Genesis player, all my youth I dreamt to play Link to the Past... I played Landstalker, Crusader of Centy, Beyond Oasis countless times and they said it was all clones of Zelda... So I was laughing when I finally saw the SNES game. It's ridiculous. Sega may not be the superior system but SNES was tainted by Nintendo policies to create childish neutered games.

      @@Avrelivs_Gold I think Zelda ALTTP was an amazing game, and dark enough in tone at least, to be interesting narratively. Nintendo was mostly and is mostly fa.ily friendly, but I'd say Zelda, while having some zany NPCs, is not a childish series.

      @@radicaldreamersteve5743 it's very, extremely childish... For kids like 7 years old it's fine. If you played better games, you can't go back to Zelda anymore. You just see they treat you as a sucker. Really great games are different. I played some games when I was 8 years old and still love them even today. Children are not poo poo moo moo babies.

      @@Avrelivs_Gold I just totally disagree with this take, though I respect that you enjoy other series and do not enjoy Zelda. I still find most Zelda games fun to this day. We can use ALTTP as an example. I don't think the storyline is especially childish, though, like most Zelda games, the focus remains on lore and exploration over narrative. I think the dungeons are engaging enough to be interesting. Sure, the first two dungeons will only tickle your brain, but generally speaking, later dungeons have some difficult puzzles. I don't know that many 7 year olds will really be able to tackle and understand a game like Zelda Majora's Mask either. I think it is accurate to say that on the surface, Zelda is approachable to anyone, but those who want to get the full experience, both narratively or gameplay wise, will benefit from age and wisdom.

    Still have both these wonderful consoles. I occasionally play the classics til this day. These consoles litterally had some of the best games ever made. My top 100 list of games consists of at least 20 PS1 games and 12 N64 Games.

      @@michaelschilling8662 Nice! The creativity in the 5th gen is unmatched imo. The birth of 3D gave developers a lot of space to play with and wasn't corporitized and standardized yet. I'd venture to say 10-20 PS1 games would be in my top 100 games and 5-10 N64 games would be as well, if I ever made such a list.
