    Thank-you for sharing your adventure, including your close call. In the early 1970's I hiked in the Marble Mtn. Wilderness; but was w/ a Sierra Club group backpacking excursion. So a lot of the planning & keeping on course, was done for us. For a brief time, I had hiked on ahead of my group, when suddenly i came across a young couple crouched at the side of a stream where the guy was just putting on a tourniquet because he'd just been bitten by a rattle snake. So the universe selected me to run down-hill back to the trailhead & campground to call for rescue. A helicopter arrived in about an hour and airlifted the guy to a medical office. i was told later that I had saved the guy's life. It made for an adventure I will always remember.

    I came across your video today. Love it! It means a lot to those of us who use to enjoy hiking but due to age and health issues can longer do these types of trips. Thank you for going through the time and trouble that allows us to mentally go along with you. It's the next best thing to being there! Good luck on your future hikes!

    As a fellow hiker/adventurer, kudos to a great account of the beauty of nature and all that being alone in the woods has to offer. Not seeing a single soul since setting off at the trailhead is truly rewarding, that is what I seek when hiking. I have been off trail at times, not by choice, and it is definitely challenging to keep your cool and reorient yourself. Thankfully, with the threat of bad weather (snow) possible, you were able to pull it off and get back to relative civilization, lol...Northern California looks gorgeous! Thanks for the video!

    Gabriel's getting lost is part of the inescapable surprise element in every activity in the wilderness anywhere and any time. Good that he weathered the surprise well though alone and reached safety adding the exhilaration to his experience that a standard well-mapped trip would not have given him. Thumbs up !

    Very good video! I was nervous for you when you lost the trail. I am not a hiker, but do ride my horse in wilderness areas. We have ended up on elk trails that we thought were the actual trails, before they petered out. We have also been in areas where cattle are allowed to graze and it is hard to tell where the actual trail is, as opposed to trails the cattle have made. Fortunately, even though we have spent some time searching for the “real” trail, we have always, knock on wood, made it back to the TH. I am very glad that you also made your way safely back to civilization and that burrito! Carry on my wayward son.

    Near worst case scenario for us travelers breaking down in middle of nowhere & mechanic not wanting to fix. Glad you were able to make the best of it. Trail navigation when they become near non existent or poorly marked is something I've gotten better at over the years. It happens, I had very similar experience in backcountry of yellowstone in pellican valley last yr. Looks like you were prepared w map & compass. Excellent depiction of your awesome adventure filled adventure!

    Good video. Not sure if anyone has told you but you neck and back would be sore from the body posture you have when you are carrying your pack. You need to be more upright without a bent neck. I am positive this would fix it. Just my opinion. Hope it helps.

    Gabriel: What you were needing was a compass to accompany the map. It can be a life saver and easy to read. Following the topographical land contours tend to make you go in circles. It also doesn't help when there are no signs to follow. Wonderful video!

      I can walk through urban ghettos and even areas where light coloured Europeans are not so well liked, BUT, when I see posters about mountain lions and bear scat all around me, and I am also totally alone, HELL I am looking for the fastest quickest way out of there,trying to get the authorities on a cell to tell them I am lost, don't even want to spend one night alone there,and hoping I can defend myself against any wild beast. Yet statistically speaking,I am likely in more danger walking around the wonky areas of any major city.Props to you for being so cool whilst alone like that,LOL.

    • @TheophilusBoone
      @TheophilusBoone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would be much more afraid in the urban areas. I've spent hundreds of nights alone in the wilderness here in the east. Seen bear and wild boar, gotten the warning huff from a couple of deer, lots of rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths, and more than a few alligators, but none of them really threatened me. If I had spent that much time walking through the cities near here, I'm pretty sure I would have had some kind of trouble. I trust nature more than man-far more. Pepper spray and watching where you step will protect you from nearly anything in the wilderness. It's the weather or stream crossings that are most dangerous out there. I have had some close calls with both of those. Go prepared and you'll be fine. It's so beautiful to hike alone. One to one with the universe.

    • @jaymeez
      @jaymeez 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wilderness is beautiful and scary but I think you and Ed may be a bit paranoid in regards to the "Scary Big City" picture you are portraying. Maybe you have had personal experiences that make you feel this way but as a person who was born/raised in big cities the same can be said as nature. What what you do and be aware of your surroundings and your fine. I love both the big city vibe and nature, just depends on my mood.

    • @TheophilusBoone
      @TheophilusBoone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure you are right about that-city boy, country boy perceptions. But I have had a couple scary incidences in the city. I've lived in the city too. But I am far out now, and I won't go back. The city is where the action is, but a deep serenity is here where I live in the country. I'm really glad not everyone appreciates the wilderness or it would be much more crowded out here.

    Note: In response to some of the comments, yes, I had a compass. But I had a trail map that wasn't detailed enough for off-trail hiking, so it wasn't great for navigation once the trail disappeared. This movie wasn't meant to be an explanation of everything I brought while backpacking. I made a separate video series at the same time I filmed this movie, talking a lot more in-depth about my gear and giving tips on wilderness backpacking such as getting water, making a fire, hanging your food and all that practical outdoors stuff. It's a three-part series that's packed with a lot of info. You can watch those videos here: th-cam.com/video/xjX7LClchyA/w-d-xo.html
    PS. There's now a Part 2 to this movie, so to speak. Four years later I went back to the Marble Mountains, only to once again experience car trouble while driving out to the trailhead. You can watch the full movie of that adventure here: th-cam.com/video/F5WGhgO_oHM/w-d-xo.html

    I got lost in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland during a blizzard and 70 mph winds. I ended up spending a night in a snow hole. I was still lost in the morning because the snow was still coming down thick and fast and all the trails had disappeared, so I took a bearing and walked on the needle because visibility was down to around 10 feet. The wind chill was insane and the winds still around 70 mph. I finally ended up back in civilisation and collapsed on the border of Aviemore. I ended up in hospital minus 2 fingers and one toe due to frostbite. Scary stuff, but I still go hiking and wild camping. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone keeps your spirit alive. I'm 62 years old and will do this stuff till the day I die. In fact I'll probably die doing this stuff.

    I posted a comment last night. I was surprised you replied. I dont normally post comments to videos. The reason I did post a comment, was because you were so positive and happy even though your vehicle broke down. You found solutions and made the best of each situation. I dont know anyone like this. However, I used to know one man that was similar. His name was Jeff Bozman. He was my best friend. He died about 6 years ago of bladder cancer. You reminded me of him not because of the way you look or personality.....but more due to your positive attitude and for your whimsical way of viewing life. I would be so thrilled to know you more closely. I have no idea how far away you reside. I assumed that you lived out west......i live in the hocking hills of ohio.......a stunning ly beautiful place. Look up hocking hills state forest ..old mans caves - cedar falls - rock house - rockbridge etc..... possibly you will explore the hundreds of miles of our Appalachian trails. I hope to hear back from you..

    Born in Colorado, Air Force Brat, so traveled the world as a tiny tot, always felt lost since I was so little, parents would leave me in the hotel room all day while they toured Europe just like you with my older brother and sister. Room maids were not happy about that. My father retired to Appalachia where he was born, coal country. I lived in the woods from ages 9 until I left home at seventeen, never been back. I loved the woods, I would go out exploring every day, usually sleeping in a cave, treehouse, barn, or tent, never at home in the summers. The way the trail disappeared in your videos was like a normal exploring thing to me, the trails were worn that way by the deer, not hikers, so I was always looking for high ground, climbing trees, finding some landmark and then saying, "Oh." I often surprised myself, often found myself turned around like you, especially in the middle of the day, and I seemed to love getting lost like that, but just for an hour or two. So this was just fun for me, no big deal, you knew the major landmarks, but the drama was your back, because that could have delayed you.There was always the Cambrian layer of the trees to eat, sure you knew that, so never a question of needing food or water. plenty of fish too. That was fun, so thank you for the adventure.

      Cool. Reminds me of the Tom Brown books. It certainly depends a lot on where you are. In this case if I'd taken a left when I was in that creek, instead of a right (which was what I ended up doing), then there were no trails down that way at all and I would have been struggling through the wilderness until I came to a road which would have been a very long ways. I still had some things to munch on and could have gotten by without food for days, so that wasn't a big issue, more a matter of getting stuck somewhere that I couldn't go further or having a not very fun time for days trying to get out of there. Fortunately it all worked out okay.

      I am a novelist now, second career after retiring as an engineer. I write a lot of survival fiction based upon those days in the woods, lots of historical fiction, like WW2, the 1800s in the Rockies, and even Canada up by the Arctic Circle. I will post some of those so you can look them up next week, sort of busy now.

    I enjoyed your movie. I was going to pause at 30 minutes to do house chores, but your trail ending saga and wanting to know how you solve the trail dilemma , kept me glued to my screen. Thank you for your time and effort to create your videos.

    Hi Gabriel! Thank you so very much for this amazing hiking you took us watchers all the way with you! I am happy that you made it safely out from the beautiful wilderness you love to enjoy! One thought about also could have have some help if you would had taken a compass with you together with your hiking map over the area! The sun also gets some directional help anyhow you made it just fine out of the situation, but in order for you to enjoy more please consider a compass for your next time to be taken with you on your hiking adventure, it is very light and adds not much weight to your backpack! The scenery of the lakes at sunset and early morning was breathtakingly beautiful and I could sense the tranquility of the still waters and stillness of the evening turning to night! Again big THANK to you Gabriel you do exceptionally unique hiking videos! Please publish some more! Wishing you safe and happy hikes in future!
    PS. I hope your back is now fully recovered and I suppose your backpack had a hip-belt; so you carry the weight of the backpack, with your bone-structure instead of loading the heavy weight on long day walks, on your shoulders and your back!

    Topo maps and a compass are a little more helpful in figuring out exactly where you are.

    Build two fires and sleep between them to stay warm. Don’t chop wood for firewood. Just feed long branches into the fires as they burn.

    Get some hiking poles to ease up on the back pain perhaps. Maybe some comunication device and a friend to check up with every once in a while when backpacking. Good video and hike!

    I'm glad you made it out. I've been in similar situations like this in the Uintas w/ badly marked trails and what has worked well for me in dealing w/ this has been to print my own topo maps w/ Caltopo, plug in GPS waypoints on the trail, and then export the GPX file into my Garmin GPS. I'm glad you got the burrito.
