The Best Portable Air Conditioner - A Buying Guide

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ส.ค. 2024
  • Current list of top rated portable air conditioners overall:
    1. Midea Duo
The Midea Duo has replaced the LG LP1419IVSM as the most efficient portable air conditioner on the market. It is so much more efficient that the 12,000 traditional BTU submodel - the MAP12S1TBL - has a SACC of 10,000 BTUs. The 14,000 traditional BTU model - the MAP14HS1TBL - has a SACC of 12,000 BTUs.
As we talk about in this video, we always recommend that you buy the highest SACC model you can afford and so we recommend the MAP14HS1TBL over the MAP12S1TBL, though either one of these submodels should perform very well even in the most challenging environments.
Midea Duo MAP14HS1TBL (12,000 SACC BTUs) on Amazon - geni.us/Os0aFfc
Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL (10,000 SACC BTUs) on Amazon - geni.us/XLVLtc
    2. LG LP1419IVSM
The LG LP1419IVSM (10,000 SACC BTUs) is now recommended as the second best option on the market.
See it on Amazon - geni.us/4EVHe
    3. NewAir NAC14KWH02
The NewAir NAC14KWH02 (9,500 SACC BTUs) is now recommended as the third best portable air conditioner on the market.
See it on Amazon - geni.us/Y6jJzAG
Alternative options for smaller and/or easier to cool rooms (low SACC units):
    Black + Decker BPP06WTB on Amazon - geni.us/u5OKFeS
    Frigidaire FFPA1022U1 on Amazon - geni.us/kgUicu
Additional options for large and/or challenging to cool rooms:
    Whynter ARC-14S on Amazon - geni.us/X8pfDz
    Honeywell HL14CESWK on Amazon - geni.us/CIX2
In this video we aim to find the best portable air conditioner on the market. To do so, we first have to discuss a new standard for portable AC cooling capacity - SACC. A clear understanding of seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC) is absolutely critical to making a purchase decision. Next we discuss the pros and cons of dual hose portable ACs and how to estimate area of coverage (in sq. ft.) for a particular model. We end by going over the best options currently on the market.
    0:00 - Introduction to SACC
    7:20 - Dual Hose Units
13:28 - The Dual Hose Myth

Great video and finally I can send this to people that don't believe them when I tell them about the single hose versus dual. I still think dual is best no matter what.
    Quick story:
I first purchased one back in 2005 for my Class A motor-home. The roof top units worked great but were older, power-hogs and very loud. It was mid day, the roof top A/C had been running and the interior was comfortable (and loud) as I unboxed and setup the new unit. I put it in the front area near a window and sealed up all cracks with tape as I hooked up it's single hose. I sat in front of it and felt how cold it was and how quiet. I turned off the top A/C and let the new unit take over and it seemed to be doing great. I then went further forward and sat in the drivers chair, to do some paperwork, while my fiancee laid on the couch. It was 95 outside, in the Florida swamp heat, but so much better inside. Life was good.
After about 30 minutes I found my self starting to sweat and could have sworn the unit stopped cooling. I asked my fiancee and she said it was still blowing ice cold. I went over and stood in front of it and sure enough, it was still blowing cold. I went back to the front and felt, at least, a 20 degree difference and scratched my head. I went to the mid and then the rear bedroom and it was just as hot as the front now. I quickly realized what was happening; the unit was creating a negative pressure and every-bit of the motor home was becoming an oven, except for right in front of the new unit. Life was loud again as we reverted back to the roof top unit.
Back then I just put it in my garage and eventually sold it with the warning. I had no time to research it and also figured they did not make any dual hosed units since I had never seen one for sale. Not till a decade later did I find one but no longer used the RV. It was for my garage where there used to be a wall A/C from the previous home owner. It was an actual rectangle opening in the wall (not a window rigging). I took the board that was cut to fit the opening after they removed the A/C, installed holes large enough for the two intake and exhaust hoses and began to cool my garage workshop for the first time. Life was good.

So you're saying I should be okay as long as I get the dual hose. My AC unit went out in my travel trailer and decided this was the best way to go. I still have the one in my bedroom. Mississippi isn't any better than Florida.

Very informative review. Thank you. I've been using a portable unit in my bedroom for years, and one thing I've done has helped a great deal--I insulated the exhaust hose. I used a "duct insulation" picked up at my local home center. It's mylar foil-wrapped fiberglass that is meant for round ducting. I cut it to length to match my hose, and secured it at both ends of the hose with duct tape. I protected the thin mylar foil with heavy-duty plastic sheeting (3.3 mil) and used lots of duct tape to also secure that. I cannot detect heat loss through the sides of the hose now, and before the insulation, the hose got noticeably hot to the touch. I think this must increase the effiiciency of it in my room, although I have no way to quantify that. For a smail cost in money and time, it has been very beneficial. I move this hose daily (I can't leave the AC hooked up when not in use at night), and it has not torn or been damaged in any way. If I get another portable unit, I'll do that to the new one too.

Dual hose units are great for small grow rooms/closet grows because you can attach/duct a carbon filter with the second hose, instead of using it as it was intended. If you do that, its best to cover the secondary compressor cooling vent so it doesn't pull in the smelly air you are trying to filter before exhausting.

I've noticed that between two portable ACs with identical SACC numbers the Dual Hose cool better in temps above 90 vs Single. This difference vanishes when temps are below 90.

You will not find a more in depth, comprehensive review. The clear revelation of the SACC score provides the critical criteria for decision making in purchasing the appropriate BTU output of a unit. I just purchased the LG 1419IVSM after scouring the country I finally found one in a Home Depot In Nogales Arizona. They have one more left as of 5/27/2020. Astoundingly thorough in considering all factors affecting the efficiency of an inherently inefficient AC unit. Very enlightening to say the least. Thank you for all of your time and effort on this subject.

I almost bought a dual hose Honeywell with a SACC of 8,000 BTU but somehow it bothered me that if Dual hose units are the only way to go why do manufacturers bother manufacturing single hose units? Well this video succinctly explained things in a way that even I could understand. Thank You so much!

Really appreciate the video to help understand the inefficiencies of these units. Unfortunately its the only thing that will work for my situation as window AC units are not allowed. My question is can you do a review on AC/Heat?Dehumidifier type units and your recommendations? These older apartments in the Northwest did a terrible job in placing the baseboards. Dont like using them and think a dual or try purpose unit might be what I need.

Have a single hoser in my garage in Florida. Leave door to conditioned house open to pull cool air in as well. Does it work? Sort of. But portable gets overwhelmed in the afternoon. I also used an insulated IR reflective hose to blow hot air into the attic through a hole I cut. Garage door is uninsulated, it gets up to 110 or more in the afternoon radiating a lot of heat into garage. Need to insulate it. I have bought a split system and will install it this year.

  • @nathanielfuentes5294

This was great until the overemphasis on the negatives of a dual hose system.
    1) Air leakage from the hose inlet/outlet is going to be insignificant compared to the leakage around the hose window adapter.
    2) The pressure gradient brings hot outside air in at the hot outside temp. If you’re pumping out 500CFM, simple math shows how quickly you lose cool air.
    3) Harder installation- You’ve got yo be kidding. It takes 2-5 minutes to install. The extra hose isn’t doubling the installation time.
    4) Let’s see some IR imaging on how much heat the intake hose leaks into the indoor air. I’m willing to be that fluid dynamics reduces heat transfer by a significant amount.
SACC - you just done telling us that the equation was skewed by manufacturers. 83 degrees is hardly hot enough to be uncomfortable. 90+ is realistically where many users will be using ACs. Which means the SACC is not fully accounting for the REALITY of cooling in the real world.
This review of portable ACs is so biased and click bait.

I'm considering a duel hose Hisense unit from costco. The manufacture says this unit is 10k SACC / 12k BTU. If you are comparing a 10k single house vs 10k duel house. Do the advantages of of having duel hose matter more possibly?
The reasoning for duel hose for me is being in the PNW with wildfires in the summer. Along with the aroma of the Puget Sound near me on a hot day is not great. Minimizing negative pressure seems like a plus. "MODELAP70020HR1GD" not sure if I trust the manufacture though.

  • @Z_question
    @Z_question 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The reason you don't see dual hose systems is due to the cost to build them and people willing to pay the extra money for them. Single hose units air intake is coming from the room it's cooling and is exhausted outside. dual hose system pulls air from the outside cools the coils and go's right back outside super heated. It's a heat exchanger. Dual will use 1/3 less energy to do the same job as a one hose unit.

What about watts used to achieve a specific SACC. Would be nice to have a power consumption in kw vs SACC in your table. That’s pretty important. I might choose a lower SACC unit if it is more efficient. Or maybe I got it all wrong let me know 😀

I doubt the freebie I got is very efficient, but I modified it to a dual hose myself. I only need to use it 8 weeks a year max(running 50%of that time) and it's the best/only option for the room. The condenser exhaust is plumbed into an 8" exhaust line, so the hot air is pulled out quickly and the fresh air comes from outside the room. It will not cool the room without the second hose

Great review but you compare an LG single to Wynter dual hose unit, it’s not the same design. I have a Honeywell that is a single hose unit but has the connections to be converted to dual hose. I strongly feel if I purchase the extra hose to convert it to dual hose, it would make a huge difference. That would be a better comparison for dual vs single hose units.

    Hello Consumer Analysis,
thank you very much for the info in this video, very helpful.
I would like to ask a question. On all single hose portable air conditioners the air filter is always removable and washable no matter the brand and model but the intake grille (bottom) is sometimes removable and washable and sometimes not.
So my question is the following:
Does it matter much if the intake grille (bottom one) is removable and washable or not? If not removable, how can it be properly cleaned?
Thank you very much in advance for considering my query.
    Best regards,
    SV

Considering using a Portable AC unit instead of a Heat Pump.
I know that these units are designed to vent through a window but would it be possible to vent the Portable AC down into the basement and out a 5-6" vent through the foundation like you would do for a heat exchanger or dryer?
You are going to tell me that they are not designed that way and that it comes with vent pipes for installation to to a window, but I must ask why would it not be possible?
This would make it less intrusive then putting the vent in the window. It could make the Portable AC unit a permanent installation. Would be better for security because it is easy for a burglar to knock out the vent pipe to access a home, but it would be much harder for the burglar to squeeze through a 5" vent in a wall or foundation

No mention of the coefficient of performance?
Although this would vary according to the ambient temperature, you could specify representative figures. At 95F and 83F would be a good choice. But of course we would need to know the power of the motors (fan + compressor) at those speeds, which is usually undisclosed.

Let me tell you something..when it says 8000 BTU ...then it comes into the USA..it is turned into SACC..The Numbers are Lower, like 5100 btu/sacc...Keeping a Kean Eye on those...Lowe had a 10,000 BTU/SACC but it converted into 16,000 BTU without the SACC conversion.
AireMax-115-Volt-White-Vented-Portable-Air-Conditioner at lowe and look at the photos.
This one is rated for 16,000 BTU but Lowe was selling the lower end of the Numbers ( The SACC ),which it is at 10,000...look at the Reviews for that AC and look at the Box...it will say 16,000 BTU but not BTU/SACC. This is how I figured this out.....I bought a 8,000 BTU AC from Amazon and the Aire on the same day and got both boxes.....then one box says 16,000 BTU and the other says 8,000 BTU...but the energy label is showing 5100 btu/sacc.

Thank you for all of your info, it's been a great help as a new homer. Quick question - would you recommend a window ac unit over a portable one? If so, which would your recommend? In this review you mentioned the efficiency of portable units before subpar, so I want to make sure I heard right regarding the two.

Yes, if it's possible for you to install a window unit I would recommend it over a portable unit. Unfortunately, I've yet to research or test any window AC units so I cannot make a model specific recommendation.

@@consumer-analysis I have to make a point about LG. This is a single hose which means 100° to 110° F outside is bad for the portable AC as it could intaking hot air from outside of the house. That would make the compressor work up so much and could freeze up the system.
For that reason, Whynter ARC-14SH would be a better bet for hot summer. Even I can't have the single hose portable AC where I lived because it could go up to 110° F.

I just got one for free from a neighbour and it works great.I live in a bedsitter and that's probably why it works so well i.e. it hasn't got a lot of room to cool. His flat is triple the size of mine so naturally, it didn't work as well.

Great review. I purchased LG portable after this video. What is interesting that many portables do not come equipped with shut off system. In LG thermostat turn off the compressor, but not the unit, which continue to blow air. It is rather inconvenient.

Well, yeah, thats how all non-central AC's typically work. Window units keep their fans on too and only run the compressor as needed

  • @TheLumberJacked

So the claimed 44db sleep mode is a myth? I ask because isn’t that the point of a variable speed inverter compressor? It can run at a lower speed. I see reviews all the time talking about how much quieter these are than so and so’s old one. My entire hope was I’d use this on a small space (90sq ft) so it could be reasonably effective at the lower speed for sleep time.

Very good review. I do wish more discussion was devoted to handling the condensate. This has been a real problem. If its portable then wouldn't it be logical that I want my water to drain out the window? And most windows are not on the floor where the drains are.

    • @dr.eldontyrell-rosen926
      @dr.eldontyrell-rosen926 3 ปีที่แล้ว

These ACs use the heat of the condenser to evaporate water condensation which is carried out the window with the heated air (within certain limits).

It is awesome all the factors to be considered when looking to cool an room
In my case I want to cool an office I am doing in my garage ( south Florida) with 60 sq ft.
I am wondering between a portable unit or add a vent for such office from the closes vent inside the house
I have an inverter ac unit brand new as central air
Would it be enough with an extra vent or will need a portable unit >9k btu?

If u spending that kind of money, why not just get a mini split system AC. Its much better cooling/heating a room, much quieter etc. I've tried portable's but my window type makes it harder to cool a room, plus the hose from the portable gets really hot so it takes longer to cool.

    • @petermaz701
      @petermaz701 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Mini Splits are the way to go but many people don’t have that option. Landlords won’t allow it no place to put the outside unit the list goes on and on. I had a wall unit I took it out and replaced it with a split unit because I own this house and it works fantastic I love it.

With forest fire smoke being a new reality, drawing outside air into the room is a whole new level of bad. This morning I bought a Danby DPA120B9IBDB-6 (Factory Refurbished) 14,000 BTU with a SACC of 12,000. It has a unique dual-hose design with the two hoses together in one rounded-rectangle hose. I suffered through the Heat Dome a couple of years ago. It was brutal. Never again.
I also own a Honeywell air purifier and BlueAir 411 air purifier. I choked on forest fire smoke a few years back, never again.
All I need now is smoke and decent heat wave to justify these expenses! 😧
    EDIT:
The Danby was 'on sale' for $448 Canadian dollars before tax, eq to $340 US Dollars.
$499 in other stores, or $380 US Dollars. It weighs 90 lbs in the box.

I agree on the ACC "cooling power", but 2 hose units are more efficent "at the electric meter" just because once the room is cool they have to keep it cool without having have to keep cooling the air draft made by the exclusive fact that is a singe hose unit. I this is seen on the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rate) that is the comparison between the electicity used by the unit in a "standard" summer. In my opinion comparing two units just with just ACC is unfair.
Your comparison is like buying a car comparing two cars just by top speed, if A gets to B in half the time it's better, what also matter, in my opinion, is that A wastes 10 times more petrol than B for the same trip. My chooice would be to get a speed fast enough (or enough ACC to cool the room) and the lowest energy usage (highest SEER ).

    • @consumer-analysis
      @consumer-analysis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

SEER is never used for portable AC units. Only EER and now CEER is used. CEER is directly dependent on ACC. See the equations used for calculating CEER in section 5.4 here: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrieveECFR?gp=&SID=83f8e5ba7502cb6f0b2803f5b3a467d3&mc=true&r=PART&n=pt10.3.430#ap10.3.430_127.cc

OK, so that made sense. I gather that if my 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner has a SACC rating of 8,000 BTUs, then it would have the same cooling power as an 8,000 BTU in-window air conditioner.
