    7 cats in my house (all rescued as very small kittens that showed up on the back porch over an 8 year period of time). And two dogs (again, rescues). It’s a hairy situation. I’ve gotta vacuum my portable a/c’s intake filters every 4 to 6 weeks. Should probably do it more often.
    I bought my unit about 4 years ago at a WalMart here in Arkansas and it is run near CONSTANTLY both winters and summers as it’s the primary a/c source for my 1200 sq.ft. home (my central cool/heat died and I ain’t gonna pay to fix it so I bought my Arctic King). It’s located in the combo kitchen/dining room with an open/doorless 3ft wide doorway separating that area from the rest of the non-air-conditioned house. Have had no problems out of it after 4 solid hard years of use and it seems to work as well as it did the first day I cranked it up, keeping the kitchen/dining room area very comfortable both in summers and in the winters even when it’s near freezing outside. Below freezing and on down to 0 degrees (outside) it must be a real efficient workhorse because although it can’t keep it t-shirt weather in here when it goes below freezing outside, it does manage to keep the temp quite livable in the kitchen/dining room (but you will feel some chill - so we wear sweatshirts and jackets then).
    What brand is it? It’s an ARCTIC KING (apparently made by Midea as the manual that came with it gives a webaddress of www.midea.com ).
    BTU/h: 13,500/11,000
    SACC: 10,000
    Its model# is WPPD10HW0N (‘H’ for heat-pump model). I’m happy with the way it’s held up, as hard as it gets used. When temps drop to below freezing or rise into the high 90s and above 100 - for however long those kind of temps are on us, my trusty Artic King by Midea NEVER shuts down to rest or take a break other than the defrost cycles when running the heat in the winter - then it’s right back to work keeping the cold at bay as soon as the defrost cycle has run its course. This can and has sometimes gone on SOLID for a week or two at a time. It’s forecast to get down to 28 again tonight, same as last night. It’s approaching freezing outside now and I’m here in the dining room at the kitchen table feeling cozy thanks to the constant work of my Artic King by Midea. It’s not the quietest machine in the world but it’s run so constantly that I’ve learned to tune it out.

      Yeah, heat pump mode can be pretty loud. It does keep up pretty well, even on some pretty cold days (with the vent trick)
      With that many animals, id be sure the inside of your unit isn't getting filled with animal hair like both of mine were. I 3d printed some filters for the lower side vents to help but I'm going to clean it yearly most likely.

    This is really nice tech. I do wish they were sealed better and worked in colder outdoor temps. I have an unheated crawlspace, and am thinking about putting one of these in it. This would have the effect of warming the floors in the house all winter. Main problem is it would not work in the colder months.

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, it's hard to blame the units because it's really down to physics and the fact that it's been mostly 240v mini splits that have been getting all the love and attention.
      Midea does seem to be pioneering the 120v window unit market in the last year or two and I'm certain we will see some "hyper heat" models with drain pan heaters and other stuff, in the not-so-distant future!

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've been shopping around for 120v stuff and there are not a massive amount of pre-charged equipment for sale.
      A few years back you could get small 8000 btu mini splits with flexible lines attached that were supposed to go in the window somehow but they stopped selling those due to leaks I think.
      If you're fully renovating, id look at some of the 120v "floor" unit mini splits from pioneer. If you're feeling a little more spendy, id get a more expensive LG unit so that when it comes time to repair, you can still buy parts for it.
      I definitely think well see a lot more cold climate 120v stuff in the next few years. if that's what you're after.

      It's pretty versatile. It makes a decent amount of water in heat pump mode sometimes. I don't think I remember it being over something like a gallon overnight and I'm sure it would be less in a trailer.
      This paired with a big ecoflow or a digital inverter gen would be a good combo.

    Great video. Can you please explain about the heating mode when it is too cold outside? I see that you remove the hose from the windows at 3:42 to be able to run heat mode when it is too cold outside. Costco has 14KBTU with a heat pump on sale at $449 and I am thinking about getting one just to use it in winter time. Thanks!

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, so the unit will shut itself off and stop heating when the temp outside drops under around 35f. Opening up the vent like that allows the unit to pull in and mix some indoor air which allows it to heat in lower temps. That's at the cost of efficiency and heat output though. If I had to guess, it makes it output 2000btu - 3000btu less since it causes a large amount of negative pressure in the room and will suck in cold air from outside.
      I've only tested it down to 20f with the vent pipe like that. I can't say I would recommend it as a primary heat source but I use it to supplement as long as I can until I'm forced to turn on my massive antique boiler.
      There are plenty of single hose heat pump units that work just fine like that so mixing in air should still be more efficient than a single hose portable heat pump

    In the heating mode does it not evaporate the condensation? I noticed you said you had a jug there for when you run it in the heating mode. I'm just curious looking to upgrade but my current whytner model self evaporates condensate in cooling and in heating. We should have pretty similar weather if you are in Chicago i'm just a few hours south of you. Definitly would be a desciding factor for me. Great video by the way.

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It does need somewhere to pump water in heat mode. It's just kinda the nature of the beast. I has a very strong little lift pump built in for when it needs to drain and I usually have it pump outside unless it's below freezing and I want to continue to heating using the tube trick. It's an amazing unit though

    Thanks for the video! Two questions:
    1. Did you finish the added fur filter add-on? I worry about all my dog's fur breaking this faster.
    2. In heat mode, do you need to vent it at all? Does it lose any efficiency? It seems like heating the already warmer inside air without be more efficient. Any reason not to do this?

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I need to vent it when it's around 38f or lower outside in heat mode. It is less efficient but definitely still way more efficient than a space heater.
      I only got the sides done so far. The one's on the back are harder to seal off. It does work pretty well though. I'll upload it to my printables profile soon.
      Opening the vent up also opens it up to more hair btw. I'm probably going to wrap window screen over the hole in the future.

    I absolutely love these things! Lmk if you think they are worth the extra amount for an inverter heat pump. @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My kw/h meter died last year so I didn't get enough data but I can tell you it operates at around 900w-600w power draw depending on how recently it has defrosted.
      The unit usually will defrost every 1-2 hours when it's very cold, it will draw 900w right after the defrost cycle and heat a lot. After about 30min to an hour it will slowly drop to 800-700w.
      It will then switch to defrost where it pulls 300w-700w for a couple of minutes.
      Essentially, it doesn't pull more than 1KW per hour.
      Please note, if you're planning on using this to heat at a lower outdoor temperature, you need to pull part of the vent off. That does reduce efficiency but it does allow it to heat down too much lower temperatures

    Cats are people, too! Terrific video. Is their a preference to you personally between these two units as there is a difference in pricing? Do they work better in high or lower humidity? And will this cool 550 square feet? Is there a limit regarding how low it will cool in relationship to outside temperatures? Wow, what a lot of questions!

    • @AnIdiotwithaSubaru
      @AnIdiotwithaSubaru  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From what I can tell, they are identical. I like the more simple style of vent on the "Whynter" branded unit but that's just personal preference.
      These would have no problem with cooling 500 Square feet.
      Just be sure that you have enough fans to keep the unit working hard. Inverters compressors should have a constant load on them and it seems like they do better in a big space.
      Chicago has pretty wicked humidity in the summer and both units don't seem to mind when it's dry or humid.
      The cooling performance isn't overly affected by the outside temp but when it gets cold, the heat pump functionality will struggle when you are near freezing. That's when I use the vent trick to let it intake warmer indoor air. No idea how badly that impacts the coefficient of performance but they both only use 800-900 watts in heat mode and make easily double or triple that in heat.
      Efficiency for heating is a relative term for me since my only other option is a massive 200,000 btu 70% efficient boiler from the stone ages.
      Shop around for the best price on these. The costco near me has the 4-1 reversible heat pump unit for 499 or 799 for two units. I paid 699 for just one last year and I wish I had seen that deal.
