    On one hand, the ship builder is fantastically fun and developing your own ships is practically a game in itself. On the other hand, it's fairly easy to make user-ships that trivialize the game's difficulty. You can give them so much thrust that enemy guns cannot track them, make them so durable that they're virtually indestructible, or simply shape them in such a way that the AI crashes into the ground trying to avoid collisions. Since there are few limitations on using custom ships in singleplayer I find the game more challenging when I restrict myself to using stock or near-stock designs. Still, it's a singleplayer game and there's no right or wrong way to play.

    • @Zaichata
      @Zaichata 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I like to start with stock only, but complete rework is fair game mid-campaign. I figure if I have the time to dramatically alter a ship that much I've earned it. I also feel like it's more enjoyable to build up to your ideal ship through the game, rather than just starting with it. But yeah, as long as someone's enjoying the game they should do what they want!

    IRST is actually a very accurate and passive system, as it shows an exact bearing (not an approximated bearing like ELINT) and you can identify what the enemy is by turning the IR scanner to the bearing, and looking at the waterfall display.
    Note that the IRST will scan a full 360 degrees, as indicated by IR spikes on the HUD, the small focused bearing is just the sector that you're trying to identify with the waterfall display.
    All this, the IRST is still a passive system and has 0 emissions meaning it is completely stealthy to use, and it also does not suffer from reduced range when you are landed.

    • @SimUKReviews
      @SimUKReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, but the range us my issue. I'd prefer ELINT to give me a solid warning of an approximated direction so I can counter tbh.
      I agree irst could have its uses, as a hunting device, but in all honesty I feel compelled to track the enemy strike teams more than cargo.

    • @henryhamilton4087
      @henryhamilton4087 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SimUKReviews IRST is the only way to passively know that the enemy is sending missiles (or aircraft) to you
      But at this point you should really just turn on your radar & jammer.
      Yeah ELINT and ranging enemies with routes on the map gives a fairly accurate reading too, only case for IRST i think is for ambush ships that are landed

  • @intemir
    @intemir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    A thing I found out, that you can mount your flares to a specific direction and when missile is close, shoot flares at an enemy ship, the missile will change its trajectory and kill an enemy ship.

    Fast, agile ships are excellent if you're a very good pilot. I have a tiny corvette that costs less than 7k and I can kill garrison groups guarding cities single handedly with it. If I arm it with two bombs, I can heavily damage a cruiser with it, and maybe even finish it off with guns. (Bombs will require practice to use, I recommend playing with bombers in the ship editor.) That being said, big, expensive armored ships still have their place. Sometimes an enemy is just too powerful, and your flying skills aren't so stellar as to let you take on enemy strike groups with only a couple of corvettes. You can either try weakening them with missile and air strikes, or use armored ships to fight them on more even terms. A well built and heavily armed and armored frigate can kill cruisers. There are several designs in the base game that fulfill these criteria, but custom designs can often outperform these.

    Another point on the personality points is that they will affect the crew morale events where you need to make a speech to recover morale (like the event where the sun's gone). High faith, order and/or Romani worldview make it more likely that morale doesn't get kneecapped and even recover the morale lost from the event.
    It is worth noting that it seems like Gerat worldview and Romani worldview are not easy to raise and maintain at the same time, and that order is leveraged against getting certain allies on board that otherwise would be considered bandits and outlaws to be hunted. Don't know if it's a thing but if these also affect random city events, I would not be surprised.
    Anyways, great guide! My PC is on the weaker side but I guess I can run it with every turned down XD. Might be a little before I can get the game and play it though. Custom ships are going to be the first thing I make when I do.

    Spoiler for the "to burn fuel" or "not burn fuel" decision event:
    On normal difficulty (haven't tried it on hard yet) there is no penalty at all if you select the "don't burn fuel for the crew when idle" event option. No morale loss or loss of reputation with followers, at least in the few attempts that I've experienced to date. Burning fuel *does* give you a morale boost (+3 or +5? Don't recall exactly). Although this is a very expensive luxury if you ask me.

    you got the Kh-15P a bit wrong.
    A-100
    Fast tactical missile
    400km range, supersonic (~4250kph)
    Powerful, hard to intercept
    Can be used to stop nuclear missiles
    Kh-15
    Cruise missile
    1500km range, subsonic (900kph)
    Slower and easy to intercept but is still relatively strong when it hits. Also the cheapest missile.
    Both A-100 and Kh-15 has ARH(active radar homing) guidance, which means when active missile has a radar cone and locks on to anything that enters it, it also can be jammed.
    You can also fire them in Semi active radar homing (SARH) mode, which has the benefit of being much more accurate and i think it's immune to jamming (not sure), but the enemy has to be within tracking range (the yellow ring on the map)
    Kh-15P
    Same stats as Kh-15, but has Anti Radiation guidance
    Once active it'll have a 100km 360 degree radius, where it'll pick up any radar signature and lock on to it
    IF it's a jammer, the radius expands to 500km. The Kh-15P is the ideal weapon to stop jammers.
    This also means that if the enemy has no radar, it's absolutely useless as it won't track them.
    R-3
    Theatre ballistic missile
    2000km range, hypersonic (~8000kph), flies very high and is nigh impossible to stop by conventional means.
    No guidance, only flies to a preprogrammed coodrinate.

    • @SimUKReviews

    I have a love hate relationship with highfleet. it's soooo fun, but also WAAYY to damn hard. in the sense that so many gameplay elements contradict eachother. I did actually nearly finish the game on normal. tacticing my ass off by getting to Khiva and avoiding all SGs and carriers and missile craft. only to find khiva wit literally 7 strikegroups sitting on it. I was confused and pissed, I took my time and finally played the game right, got all the tarkhans, got hidden cities, I was ready for the endgame. I only had around 4 damaged fast attack craft, 2 tankers and my carrier flagship with me. only then I found out I actually needed to rush to Khiva while also somehow getting all tarkhans, and setting up for the endgame to stop the missle cruisers?? it's just too much, even on easy. actually ragequit and gave up on it for a year after I saw Khiva being assfucked with SGs cause I took my time and actually played the game. complete BS imo

      You can get to khiva with just the Sevastopol, it can solo any strike group. Combine it with 1 carrier and 2 air defense craft for easy mode. Entering any city, your planes can be used to wipe out the garrison for no loot or use Sevastopol if you want the loot.
      As for the tarkhans, I went the direction indicated from ur, and then up. As you find each tarkhan they will alert you to others. I would rarely backtrack unless to avoid sgs and if caught your aa will kill most missles and planes, and the seva can solo the cruisers.
      That is probably the simplest way to get to khiva, if you are a good pilot you can use very maneuverable corvettes (lightning i believe) to get 100% sudden strike, youll get to attack 90% of encounters with the enemy starting on the ground, and the craft is fast enough to dodge everything (pick up/down or left/right and afterburner as they shoot)

    A very fast ship can actually hit a convoy before it can send a distress signal. I don't think any stock ships in the vanilla game are fast enough to pull this off. You'll need to ditch any system that isn't essential to be light enough to achieve this, and You'll need a huge bank of thrusters.

      @@SimUKReviews On the campaign map. When you zoom in on a fleet and put the view where you see the ground. In this particular video I can't find a moment where it happens.

      @@SimUKReviews I've searched the first video of your campaign on hard but I couldn't find any moment where you zoom while the fleet is moving. Take a look at this video. Minute 1:42. See how the camera follows the fleet? In my game it doesn't. And it's driving me crazy xD

    Regarding launching planes in combat, is it true that they won't ever return to your ship and are effectively destroyed after the fight? Seems a bit stupid if true and that's what I read elsewhere.

    • @SimUKReviews
      @SimUKReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they return to your ship, but only if you are still within the circle range you set at launch.

      @@SimUKReviews I feel like we're talking about different things. If you set a circle presumably you launched them in a strike on the world map.
      I'm talking about launching them with the hotkey during an actual battle.

      My bad. Hmm, you know I can't remember if that is what happens.

    @Sim UK im having a problem im wondering if you know the answer. My ships occasionally just stop being able to go to the complete rang of the fleet. For example i fuel up and a city will be in range but as i fly there my range gets shorter and shorter as if im leaking fuel or something. I check and its my hunters i think (your ship design) and they run out of fuel. I thought my tankers would share fuel to them? thanks for the help if anyone knows.

      Are you currently keeping the engines on to heat up the crew?

      @@SimUKReviews after asking around of reddit i found the issue. Some older modded ships will stop working as soon as they enter the shipworks because of one of the updates. But thanks for the help!

    Anyone got any idea of how to modify ships to make the ridiculous lack of money less of a problem?
    e.g. Putting planes and long ranged missiles on the sevastopol.
    I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to adding engines and fuel tanks without making fuel efficiency drop like crazy.

    You can solo this game on HARD with one ship without flying anywhere. Well, then you have to go to Khiva and do some stuff, but overall difficulty is pathetic. This game is meant to be played on basic ships with some minor tweaks.
