The dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman continues in today's passage. The woman was unwilling to reveal that she had five husbands previously. However, when Jesus brought it up, she immediately acknowledged Him as a prophet. At that point, she tried to divert Him into an argument concerning the correct location in which to worship God. The Jews had their temple in Jerusalem. The Samaritans held their worship at Mount Gerizim because they believed in only the Books of the Law. Genesis revealed that Father Abraham had built his first altar to God in that very area.
Jesus went on to say that location is unimportant to the true worshipper because God is Spirit and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. Exterior ritual has no meaning. The woman exhibited true knowledge by saying that Messiah would tell them all things. Then Jesus revealed to her that Messiah was standing right in front of her!
