1/26/25 II Samuel 15:1-37 (#29)
In this chapter we read about Absalom's conspiracy to replace his father, David, as king of Israel. He had gotten Amnon out of the way by killing him. Absalom stole the hearts of his countrymen by convincing them that David was unable to judge amongst them. David and his people had to leave Jerusalem because Absalom was approaching Jerusalem with an overthrow on his mind. David sent the two priests back to Jerusalem so that he could keep up with Absalom's treachery.

The last section of Chapter 13 describes Absalom's plot to kill his brother, Amnon. The plot was successful, Amnon was dead, and Absalom went to Geshur, east of the Jordan River, to hide out. After three years, his father, King David, had gotten over the loss of Amnon and longed for Absalom. However, David made no overt effort to bring Absalom back to Jerusalem. Chapter Fourteen: The commander ...

In the opening verses of this passage, Jesus spoke of those who witnessed for Him: John the Baptizer, His own works, God the Father, and the Scriptures. The four witnesses placed Him in accordance with the Mosaic Law. The religious leaders to whom He was speaking were strict followers of Moses' law. Remember in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said He had not come to destroy the law, but to fulfi...

The sorrows brought about by the sins of King David are beginning to accumulate. The event described in the first twenty-three verses of Chapter Thirteen is the rape of Tamar. Tamar was the 1/2 sister of the rapist, Amnon. Amnon, according to II Samuel 3:2, was the firstborn son of David. Absalom, the full brother of Tamar, was the thirdborn son of David. King David eventually received the news...

In verses 17-23, Jesus continues his claim to be equal with His Father. In fact, He told the religious leaders that everything He did and said was directed by His Father. As My Father raises from the dead and makes alive, so do I! Every person now living will eventually be raised from the dead after death. Some will spend eternity with God while others will spend eternity separated from God. So...

Please take just a few minutes to look at I Peter 4:12-16 before we go to our II Samuel lesson. Peter wrote this epistle to believing exiles who had fled the persecution of Caesar Nero. The time seems to have been shortly after the burning of Rome in AD 64. Though Nero himself seemed to be the one who set the fire, he diverted blame to the Christians. Peter reminded the exiles that to suffer pe...

Here we see the fallout of King David's sins of adultery and murder. It is a reminder that sin ALWAYS has consequences. One of the consequences is that the sinner must continue to sin in order to cover up the initial sin. Numbers 32:23 states "Be sure your sin will find you out." The prophet, Nathan, was chosen by God to confront David with his sins against Bathsheba and Uriah. Following the co...

Chapter 10 includes an unfortunate event which took place only because King David's intent to comfort the current king of Ammon was misunderstood. The previous king - father of the current one - had shown kindness to David. When the father died, David sent his men to Rabbah,, the capital city - for the purpose of comforting the son. They were suspected to be spies from Israel, so the Ammonites ...

Please notice in the first verse of Chapter 7 it is stated that "...Yahweh had given him (David) rest on every side from all his enemies,..." Therefore, it seems that Chapter 8 should appear BEFORE Chapter 7. In Chapter 8, Yahweh gave David victories and dominion over the Philistines, Moab, Zobah, Syria, Hamath, Ammon and the Amalekites. These victories increased the size of David's kingdom con...

In this chapter is one of the most important passages in the entire Bible! From a prophetic standpoint, it may be the most important. The Davidic Covenant provides the basis for the Millennium and the Everlasting Kingdom to follow. All of the writing prophets give some description to the future earthly kingdom which God's Chosen People, the Jews, will enjoy. King David had expressed to the prop...

David was finally anointed King of all Israel as God had told him he would be back in I Samuel 16. This third anointing of David took place in Hebron. After winning a battle against the Jebusites who occupied Jerusalem, David moved from Hebron to Jerusalem. Beginning in v. 17 of Chapter 5, the Philistines tried to overcome David before he could firmly establish his kingdom. The Philistines were...

In this chapter Jesus heals a man who had been lame for 38 years. The man had been at the Pool of Bethesda waiting for the "moving of the waters" so he could step into the water and be healed. This superstition must have been widely believed as there was a multitude of sick people at the pool with him. After Jesus completely healed the man, He told him to pick up his mat and walk. The Pharisees...
