Karen is simply the best female vocalist ever. Her seemingly effortless range, phrasing, and timing. Her voice was an instrument, she understood her range and effect, and she never over-stated her role in a song. She could have been a diva, but chose not to be. I don't think we will come across someone like this in our lifetime. She makes me choke up, I almost weep at the sound, her resonant voice, her instinctive feel for sound. All this without training. My goodness,
Thank You Burt Bacharach! You gave us so many great songs! Thank You for asking Richard & Karen to do a medley of your hits for the charity event. Love You Burt! We will always remember you and honor you and Hal. Rest easy handsome! Thank You Richard for going into the studio and then recording this and putting it on an album. It's one of my favorite things that you and Karen did and of course did it better than the original artists. This clip is perfection in motion. Thanks for posting this great clip!
I think the most moving tribute I ever saw to Karen Carpenter was during an interview with Herb Alpert. It was on the CBS Sunday morning show. The interviewer asked about Carpenter and her work of Alpert, and in the middle of his response he completely broke down sobbing. He truly felt she was a phenomenal talent and still missed her after her death.
Playing live piano at a concert level: Juuust barely within the range of humanly possible. Requires superhuman talent + 10+ years of daily multi-hour practice. Singing harmony: Extremely difficult and something only few singers can do, even amongst good and talented singers. Singing harmony with razor sharp precision of intonation, timing, sync with soulful lead singer, pristine enunciation, memorization of precise vowel sounds to get desired blend, all the while injecting your own sound and personality: Simply ridiculous. Jazzy improvised piano soloing during concert: Don't even try it. Memorizing 2 hours of intense piano intros, outros, solos, chords, and comp melodies and playing them note perfect in a hostile environment while your hands are shaking with nerves and you're directing a band and orchestra and trying to make eye and smile contact with an audience of thousands: Phhhht. Doing all of the above simultaneously: Hahahaha....you're joking. Richard Carpenter: Makes it look like he's playing a piano bar in your neighborhood.
There are two female singers who stands above all the rest, it's Eva Cassidy and Karen Carpenter. They are both unique with a wonderful sense for timing and phrasing and with a remarkable range. I never get tired of listening to this woman!
There are many female singers that stand above the rest: Celine, Whitney, Olivia Newton-John, Sarah MacLaughlin, Helen Reddy, ABBA, Linda Rondstat, Katy Perry, P!NK, Cass Elliot, Julie Andrews, Diana Ross, Marilyn McCoo, Janis Joplin, Dolly Parton, and many more that are so great. But Karen really does stand at the very top of that spectacular list.
The new generation needs to hear Karen Carpenter! She left us with so much music. I grew up listening to her and learned all her songs. Thanks for this.
I saw The Carpenters 4 times : early '71 in Denver, Summer of '72 in LA, '73 Anaheim Convention Ctr., & late '73 in Denver again--each time I was in awe of how much better--BETTER!!--Karen was in person. That voice was simply God's gift to us; it just breaks my heart to know how Karen was so hurt & self destructive, with her talent never being enough to hide the sadness. RIP, Karen --an Angel among us . Wolfsky9, 66 y/o
why diva's make us mad...Karen Carpenter..sweetest voice ever...playing drums..keeping perfect time and not asking for or getting any privilege than the rest of the band..we won't see her talent or humanity in pop music again...
Her rendition of Knowing When to Leave is so far and away better than any other... it's astounding how much she stands out... beautiful transitions between the grace and strength the song needs. Not easy. If it was, she'd have company...
AS723 😡😡😡. And he was controlling and kind of mean to her, according to the unauthorized biography “Little Girl Blue”. Any ‘authorized’ biography gets whitewashed by Richard and family. That’s why I can’t ever like him.
@@lcozzarelli He has a business to run. Nobody's perfect. There are plenty of moments in your own life you're not proud of, are you interested in publishing a book documenting every mistake you've ever made? Why not focus on the positive? I do!
I ABSOLUTELY love the Carpenters music! Not only does Karen have the greatest female voice, ever, but Richard's composing and voice accompanying is magical.
I've always found it remarkable that she sang so effortlessly and passionately...making it all the more enjoyable to listen to her incredibly melodic voice. Her voice remains soulful and timeless.
in 1983, I gave birth with my 1st child baby boys, they were 10 months apart, this time of the yrs Karen 😢I BLESSED her parents FOR her voice is amazing, we LOVE you Karen and THE group's.. GOD BLESS EVERYONE..
My mother liked Carpenters a lot and now I understand why. Look at this. Karen was a perfect singer and drummer, her brother too. All the musicians, which makes me feel so sorry for my generation and the ones to come.
This flash back me to good years 1970 / 1978 About Karen´s voice and Richard´s talent,... what I can add? Is all here to listen... By the way,.. Why I need to trust that she is dead? She just take a rest,.. but we can listen Her every time we like to enjoy music here in earth. Thanks for posting
These medleys are what the Carpenters are known for, this was their style, and it was one of the BEST back in the day...female singers now a days can't hold a candle to Karen's beautiful voice. She never took a vocal lesson in her life, this is her REAL TALENT AND GIFT, HER VOICE!!
Rio DJeNIRO : You are so right! It just hurts so bad that she left us at an early age! She was only 2 years older than me! Can you imagine how devastated I was hearing the news of her passing?
What a voice of pure honey she had...so flexible and so hauntingly sung...and what range, able to sail from note to note, octave to octave...and provide evocative images for us to cherish for all time....no other female voice in my opinion has her range, intonation and crystal clarity...none come close....
I love viewing all the Carpenters Bacarach/David Medley videos on TH-cam (1971 Carol Burnett Show, 1980 Music, Music, Music), but this 1972 Australia Concert is my favorite, as it showcases Karen at her happiest on the drums and performing with their band. The video in black/white gives it nostalgic feel and to actually see them perform live in actual concert and not lip-synching on TV clips/shows. Really enjoy this performance!
TQ "neroli8676" for this reliving of the Carpenters!!! I only hear them on vinyls in the late and mid 70's and when I relocate across the globe, my tapes all went GONE!!! This is awesome to see Karen at the drums and her beautiful voice once again. I pray she sings up there too....
No comparison is made in this life. Each artist has his day, have your style ... we choose what type of music we want to hear. Carpenters brought much meaning to me, for many people in the United States, here in Brazil and worldwide. she was a great interpreter of Bacharach and David. We should not do anything compared to this world.
THE GREATEST SINGER WHO HAS EVER LIVED.... You may agree with me, you might even disagree or beg to differ... It won't change what I feel.. SHE JUST IS( or was, if you insist). I have this album, only it is not the one released in Japan only. It does not sound like it does here... This is great... I've always wanted to buy the ones released only in Japan and now I know why....RIVETING AND SPELLBINDING are not enough to descibe it... Be ready for a gifted performance... I LOVE YOU KAREN
Yes, I think she is an angel and there is such sadness in my heart when I think of her leaving this world so early in her life. She was the greatest to me. KayM
Bacharach and David are my favorite composers from the 60's and early 70's and they were Richard Carpenters, as well. This is a tribute from the Carpenters to them. Quite a tribute, I say.
In the studio recording having been a friend of a friend that recorded with them. She never had to re sing anything, it was perfect in the tracks! It was the music sometimes that was not perfect to go around her voice. True story!
Willie Streety The bad synchronization put me off, and the orchestra leader in the back with no orchestra creeped me out, but I love their music. Nice post, Willie.
I don't blame your hyperbole. When I hear her I think the same thing even if I wouldn't allow myself to say it. It's just stunning the beauty of her voice, the facility and control and her musicianship. Just perfection. And that is awe-inspiring.
Wonderful, cause it takes me back to the days when they, or when I recognized they began harmonizing. This is just phenomenal to me. Truly grateful that there are those who still follow this closely. Memories.

Karen always thought of herself as a drummer who could sing. When the Carpenters started touring, the audiences complained that there wasn’t a focal point to the band because they couldn’t see her behind her huge drum kit (she was only 5’4”). Doing both = ridiculously difficult

Would have given anything to have seen the greatest singer who has ever lived, Miss Karen Anne Carpenter live!
Ok. She can sing. AND play the drums. AT the same time. AND sound wonderful. Can we agree? She was wonderful! Gone from us, at far too young an age.
Beth Heinecamp : And looking darn wonderful while singing and drumming! That smile!!!
She always seemed happiest when she was drumming.
In addition to all that, she appeared confident & effortless in her delivery ... and at 21 years of age!!!

Karen had a very gifted voice and not only could she sing deep, but also in a much higher pitch, she had great range in her vocals.
She's the best artist of the world, she lives on my heart and I love her.

Karen was such an amazing talent, she sounds just good live onstage as in the studios. Love her voice range. She is still sorely missed, even today.
Genuine music by a woman with angelic voice, Timeless songs of yesteryears. It's hard to come by these days.
her voice doesn't need a background music it is the wonderfull instrument from an angel

What a gem to have found. Much appreciated.
