I’ve heard it’s best to leave the file name alone for relinking purposes. I’ve seen people sync clips and rename the synced clip, but the original name is in the metadata and the original clip is untouched.
Yes, naming the files would be done before editing, so you can work with the already named files and you don't have to relink them! You can always leave the original name from the camera, and when you import them into the editing software, you can add notes to indicate what each file is!
