I've thrown 30k at my car that is books for about this. It's truly the proof that money can buy happiness if you are able to build it how you want it. Hobbyists and enthusiasts only earn money so they can budget some of it for what they love. People without these things in their lives can be seen on living on sidewalks, in crack houses, drinking often, beating their wife and kids, chasing hookers (highly encouraged), and many other things as hobbies because they haven't found what they like or they like what the found. I choose all but the crack. And the car is the reason I might find a sidewalk residence.

If folks think that's rough then I don't recommend getting into road/triathlon. My new triathlon bike is right at $5,000 just for the frameset. Add in the wheels, groupset, seat, power meter, ect and the cost is around $13,000-$14,000, welcome to the world of carbon fiber. Still, Scotty's bike can take a lot more of a beating than mine though, haha!

It blows my mind how much things have changed. We used to grab bars of soap from home and go to the local park and ride anything we could figure out. Now the town we grew up in has a skatepark. It was built after we were adults and we could lobby the town to build it for the kids. But it was a huge victory to us. We still drive over and ride the park at times because we fought hard to have that built for the kids. We had to drive 30+ min into Indianapolis to get to a skatepark. So we didn't start going to skateparks until we were old enough to get our driver's licenses. Our parents didn't take us to parks. Parents weren't often as involved in their kid's sports as we are now. Some were, there are ALWAYS the exceptions, like Big Scott and Donna. The bikes have gotten so much more expensive and so much more durable.

I would love to see 2006 small heavy bike Scotty see this type of bike 15 years later. Early 2000’s riders with their 5 inch bars, the 27 lbs frames, the seat post in the air. All types of crazy stuff. It would be interesting to have a old va modern bike comparison

I got a nice custom built haro/WTP BMX last year on Facebook marketplace for 60$, I got a new colony free coaster from source bmx, and I had a few parts already to add to it. I also got a 21” specialized p20 BMX for 80$, I got nice haro la Mesa tires with green sidewalls for 20$. I’m very happy with my bikes, I ride them quite a bit at the big new skatepark we got here in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I Also have a mongoose wicked moose 26” fat bmx, I love it.

If I were to build a bike at that price, what kind of returns on my investment might I get opposed to a bike under $1500? Yeah, how many will ask such a question? I'm asking because I drive an s197 and seem to spend tons on it. My buddies and credit counselors are frowning. I'm at least 5k deep on wheels and tires and another 6k deep on upgrades and minor maintenance type repairs. Far more than a financial advisor would ever allow. Car dudes understand. BTW, I have an amazing parents that always have encouraged being happy and lo9ving your rides. Be it skateboards, bicycles, motorcycles, or autos. Keep up the energy dude. Your enthusiasm is excellent.

the prices don't surprise me at all. I remember in the early 1980s some kids spent a LOT of money on their BMX bikes. They probably spent more then this back then, because none of it was made in China. They would buy either a Diamond Back or Mongoose BMX bike and then slowly upgrade a lot of the components.

Literally just gave away a bike I built back in 2010 that I spent 1500 bucks on. I don't ride it anymore and don't need the money.
But man bikes are crazy expensive. I ride more mountain/trail now and my one bike which is about 5k, has lasted 7 years of bashing with good maintenance and its still worth about 2k today used.

There is a 1930s Elgin Bluebird bicycle online. I went through all the restoration photos, and they really did a top notch job. It was a real garbage heap when they started. You could see through all the tins where it was rusted out. It was put up for sale, where it sold for well over $10,000
Also check out a Elgin Robin, Twin 40, or Miss America. If you want to look at something ugly look at the Elgin Blackhawk. Otherwise spare yourself.

5k seems to be around the upper limit of bmx cost. But look at carbon fiber road bikes and full suspension mountain bikes, some of them cost $10,000-20,000!!! You would be looking at the lower end of brand new cars / down payment on a house!!!

When I rode flatland back in the late 90s/early 2000's I custom built a couple of completes using the most expensive parts on Morales pro flat frames, and the total both times came to around $1400 and I thought that was extreme. I can't image spending 5 grand on a bmx bike.

In 1984 hutch made a bmx which retailed at £1250 in the UK. It had a lot of titanium parts and also magnesium parts, this was on another level for the time.
