DoYeon Kim, Gayageum / doyeonmusic
This performance features two of her hallmark stylistic trademarks: eliciting harsh polyphonic textures using a bow against the gayageum, as well as incorporating her unique and powerful traditional Korean-inspired vocal techniques.
-
DoYeon Kim, a traditionally trained Korean artist, has innovatively combined Korean music, jazz, and improvisation with the gayageum, introducing the instrument to the global improvisational music scene. She has won numerous international competitions, including the Dong-A Ilbo Traditional Music Competition and the On-Nala Korean Music Competition. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee’s Global Jazz Institute, Kim has collaborated with various composers and performed worldwide with the Kim Do Yeon Band and noted improvisers like Tyshawn Sorey and Joe Morris. Her albums, "GaPi" and "Macrocosm," have received critical acclaim. A pioneer in pushing traditional Asian instruments into the future, she continues to innovate as a Van Lier Fellow at Roulette Intermedium.
