Thanks, I wish my video quality and editing were better from the start but I don't want to take the old videos down because there's still some value to some folks, just like this instance.
Great video! Just yesterday I finished 6 Word of Blake 'Mechs in white, bringing me up to 20 total so far. I prime black, then use an airbrush to apply thin coats of medium grey followed by white, allowing some of the darker colors to show through in the areas that would receive the most shadow while highlighting the more exposed panels up to pure white. This creates some really nice tonal transitions and natural shadows. I gloss coat with Vallejo acrylic and let that dry for 24 hours, then use thinned MIG wash as a pin wash. MIG is enamel and is really easy to use since it dries slowly and you can wipe it off of any spot where you don't want it without having it leech into the paint beneath. After applying decals I use pure white to highlight some specific edges or panels that would catch more light, then matte coat with Vallejo acrylic using the airbrush. I then use watered down paint or pigments to weather the feet and lower legs to match the base, as, like you, I prefer my war machines to look slightly battered rather than like candy coated M&Ms. Thanks for posting these how-to's. Your work is very inspiring. Looking forward to more!
Thanks and if I were to start painting white today, I'd be using my airbrush for sure. This video was really meant to help out the majority of folks that don't have an airbrush and help them get through the pitfalls and issues that white can bring. Thanks for the tips on white, I'll see about messing around with that when I'm tinkering with my airbrush.
That really is about it, if it's too thick it's going to leave brush strokes and get chalky. If it's thinned properly, the second layer should remove the brush strokes as it's a coverage issue at that point. Unless your paint is very old and drying out, then it may need a bit more acrylic medium added to it.
This is why despite Com-Star being a great unique faction with some amazing mechs I'll never be doing them as an army. I'll stick with armies I can use citadel contrast paints for all the heavy lifting, I know my limitations. Also can we appreciate how beautiful the Vulcan sculpt is. It and the Firestarter are just two mechs that cannot be improved.
The contrast paint method is the way to go unless you have an airbrush and want to get more transitions to shadows. I probably wouldn't have even made the two white tutorials before the contrast one if contrast had been around back then. And yes, Vulcans are awesome.
@@CamoSpecsOnline There i go saying never, but i've just decided to give the Periphery some love and the 5 unit (poor mans Clan star) Century of the Marian Hegemony was too interesting to pass. So here comes the white and a little blue and copper II Legio Cataphracti for my next project. So i've been re-watching your old white tutorials for some tips. Wish me luck and patience...
I really appreciate your videos. Your explanations as you paint are great.
Thank you very much!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share this. I'd love to see that warm white tutorial that's on the Urby.
Great video... yeah, I'm late to the video but thanks! I got a bunch of old lead mechs to repaint anyways

Tamiya Black Panel-Liner Use THINNER to clean-off Shut!-Marks' and it won't Bother your Acrylics'
Awesome video! Besides thinning paints is their anything you can do to avoid brush marks and chalkiness?

Great vid, lost of info here. Thank you. By the way, did you know Vallejo makes a Pale Wash especially for white paint jobs?
Thanks and no I didn't, I'll check that one out.
Yes sir, it's product code is 73202. It's a grey(ish) very pale wash, I like to use it on pure white to add a very subtle effect
