For a man whos legacy has been so shaped by Nirvana he doesn't overly mention kurt, when he does and it goes to a deep memory like this you can always hear the emotion is still right there just under the surface. I respect grohl for a lot of reasons but one of the main ones is he does so well at honouring that legacy while not over sharing for self promotion. Hes always so respectful about his and kurts privacy, but he gives us so much of an insight just with the emotion with which he tells those stories

After pursuing music for nearly my whole life, nearly 10 years in the industry without ever really going anywhere or developing a real career, and my band of 5 years also went nowhere and disbanded - I really feel that "FUCK MUSIC" feeling. I've been distancing myself from it, haven't played in over 6 months. It's so hard when the thing that you're supposed to love, and is supposed to heal you becomes the source of the pain. I remember when I first heard that Dave was starting a new band post Nirvana. Given the gravity of this events, I was extremely cynical about him being a frontman. I’ve never been happier to be completely incorrect. This is why they do this, and I can not. Friends would say to me “why are you not playing any music” while driving, as they are aware of me loving and playing music, even friends that didn’t know I played, I love all genres of music If it’s sounds good to me. Honestly I feel this is a musician thing to sometimes catch waves of not wanting to play or make any music but then at some random moment tune in and make some of the most beautiful sounding music. Ya there’s times where people don’t feel like listening to music (Non musicians), but coming from a musician myself I notice that whenever I’m feeling down music is not what I want at the moment, I’ll drive without it even. But that is the beauty of music is that when you’re tuned in, it is honestly the safest and most potent drug. It’s keeping me going in life.

I prefer Dave's songwriting VASTLY to Kurt's. I know, no one else will admit to it (and Kurt did write an occasional absolute masterpiece, I'll never suggest otherwise), but he writes great songs that are fun to listen to, play, and rage to. Some are pretty poppy, so? Some are deep as hell, and ALL are really, REALLY good.
