Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico: Exploring the Big Room & Natural Entrance

  • Carlsbad Caverns National Park is New Mexico's most popular national park and a personal favorite of mine. The caverns are massive and provide so much room for exploration. I spent a good 3 hours underground and still didn't see everything. Some of the highlights were watching the bats exit the cave as I entered, exploring the main corridor and then walking through the Big Room. The Big Room is so impressive that it is hard to comprehend. Be sure to visit the park if you get the chance.

While the cave is obviously the main attraction, the outside of the national park is a great Chihuahuan desert landscape, and encompasses about half of the Guadalupe Mountain Range. The Texas side and Guadalupe Mountains National Park focuses more on that, but Carlsbad has some pretty cool desert scenic drives and hikes too.

I went in there as a little girl with my Mom (my dad wouldn't go into caves after serving on a diesel sub in WW2) and she and I thought it looked like a fairy castle. I couldn't see it without imagining all the wonderful fairies and elves and dwarfs that I just knew lived there. I bought Viewmaster disks that I still have to this day.

It's been over 25 years but me and the family used to go to Carlsbad every year on the 4th of July because my grandma lived there been to The carlsbad caverns can't even count how many times as a kid very cool! Brought back some good memories and their firework shows are the best by far!

I went there June 3rd 2023 for my father's birthday which was June 5th. I LUV THAT PLACE!! It is also the only cavern I've been to. My trip was my 3 hour and 2 min drive to New Mexico with my dad, sisters, grandma, and my dad's friend who had to drive because my dad had a detached retina. We left to New Mexico around 8:00AM. We got in New Mexico at 11:0AM in mountain time, and 10:00 central time. We got into the cave around 11:30AM mountain time. We were only down in the cave for about 1: hour, before taking the elevator back up to eat at the restaurant before going back down into the cave for the tour of the Big Cave, after that we found out there was no longer a little cave so we left. I will never forget that day. Btw that day was my second time going to Carlsbad Caverns. The first time I went was 6 years ago from 2023. Aka in 2017.

I've been there twice now. The first time I just took the elevator. The second time I went down the long way. And I can never express enough how cold it gets down there. I live in New Mexico and currently it's still around 85 degrees while cloudy and raining. It goes down to like 40 in the cave. Which is very refreshing.

I was there in 2019. I have been through a number of caves, but Carlsbad is the best. One of the biggest thrills though is to wait until sunset, and watch the bats by the thousands exit the cave.

I've been through the caverns three times in my life. First on a family vacation with my parents, the second on a high school trip from Texas and the third with my own kids. Each time the caverns amazed me. You have to actually go through the caverns to see and feel the grandeur. Nothing else will do.

I went there in 1991 and there wasn't a walk way there was an elevator and it's super cold down there. You have shorts on and a breezy shirt from the sun in New Mexico but when you get down there you can buy some long sleeve shirts and sweet pants which when your warmer it's so beautiful all the crystal and ice sickles that have been there for a thousand years. It's very beautiful.

At one point, It was overwhelming, like you said, in a good way, but my brain couldn’t take in the beautiful, visual assault anymore. Hey friend!! I live 2.5 hours away from Carlsbad Caverns and have been to the caverns several times over my life span. This time, because I have Parkinson's, I brought my walking cane. I'm glad I didn't leave it behind because I don't think I would have made it without it. This walk down into the cave is very strenuous and when the Park Ranger tells you to take your time, one had better listen. I do alright walking on a flat surface and can trek up to 2.5 miles at a time, but with Parkinson's it was a big effort for me and even though I had been walking 2-4 times a week apx 3 miles a week, this journey through the caverns was a feat!! It's strenuous and downhill. Your toes and feet are working hard to grip the floor so you don't go sailing down into the pit. It's a lengthy walk over 2 miles I believe and once you get to the bottom, in order to see the rest of the cave it's over another mile of walking. I took a back pack with bottled water which came in handy because of the moisture in the cave, with all of the walking and the humidity, I got dehydrated one time. No one should go through that. Be aware it would take great effort for emergency services to arrive if you couldn't make it out due to health reasons. This is not a carnival ride, this is serious business. If you're not accustomed to going to the gym or walking regularly, get in shape before you go. Bring a sweater if you get cold easily, the deeper you go, the colder it gets. Also make sure you go to the bathroom when you're on ground level because it's going to be about 2 hours before you can reach another toilet area. Also, there is a restaurant above ground that serves hamburgers, hot dogs and simple Tex-Mex food; nachos, tacos, at the bottom of the cave is a lightly stored snack shop. I visited a few weeks ago and they offered some sandwiches, chips, muffins, water and colas. This is nice, but it costs big bucks to eat snack foods. Be prepared

What’s really cool about carlsbad is that there’s always something new to see when you go down there. I just visited it yesterday and literally everywhere you look, you’ll see something that catches your eye and that can distract you from the thousands of other small details that are equally as good. Really nifty stuff.

Another feeling like I’m there with you video! Love Carlsbad Caverns. First visited in 1968 when I was 12. Somehow was disappointed. Visited again in Oct. 2018 and was blown away this time! Took a guided tour but did not do the natural entrance this time. There is SOoooo much to see. We miscalculated our time to explore the Big Room after the afternoon tour and didn’t realize they begin closing off sections of the cave early to work people toward the elevator. Next time I want to take the candle lantern tour and allow all day to explore. There are restrooms and a lunchroom in the cave.
Sadly I have had a moratorium on cave visits since the pandemic began and have passed up visiting several and am going through withdrawal. Am getting 2nd vaccination this week🤞🏻🤞🏻. Keep the great videos coming.

    Love the videos man!
Just a heads-up though, those guys at the beginning are cave swallows, not bats. The National Park Service refers to them as the "Day Shift" since them and the bats basically take turns as stewards of the ecosystem there. Fun fact: as opposed to the bats that migrate South during the winter, the swallows live there year-round.
Been going there twice a year since I was a kid, it's a beautiful place, glad you enjoyed it!

Just got back from here and Grand Canyon area for our 36th anniversary last week. Now I'm bummed, we took the elevator and miss the bat entrance plus those formation and caves after it. Oh well, will be going back next time with the grandchildren.
