This video has a few of misconceptions about the origins of the live recording of Sister To Sleep. So let's review some facts: It was not recorded on a Nokia Baked Potato Brick Phone 🤣I recorded it with a Sony ECM-717 mic and a Sharp MD MT-90 Minidisc recorder. It's the second of two soundcheck takes. I sent it to the head of the street team to be used on the official MySpace player in late 2003 and has been circulating ever since. So saying it surfaced in 2009 and saying that the taper and the uploader are the same is a bit of a mislead. I'm definitely not @JaYDENxo, lol. It sounds awful because of the many years of reencoding (and "remastering") that happened to it. No one but me had a lossless version of it and it sat in a box with my other masters for nearly 2 decades. In May of 2022, I published the full soundcheck (two takes of STS) on my YT, digitally transferred from the master disc early that year. Search for 2003-06-26 Knitting Factory Soundcheck on my channel. The live version is also on my channel, same search but without "Soundcheck". So that's 3 recordings of Sister To Sleep and are the recordings that Frank eluded to using when discussing relearning it for LA5. Hope that clarifies things a bit! PS: I also recorded that WSOU interview where they talk about it. I'm the "Spacey" they say hi to.
Another thing is, the song was originally intended for Freddy vs. Jason, and if you listen to the lyrics, it's very clear the song is from the point of view of a Freddy Krueger fan. I don't know why that tidbit keeps getting left out, but as you said, it's a 2003 song, which is when Freddy vs. Jason released. Not sure why the song never made it to that soundtrack.
There was a song from the Black Parade era, which also never got a studio version. The song is called "Someone Out There Loves You" (used to more often be referred to as "Stay" until Gerard randomly confirmed the official title on Twitter, which had to be done, as Gerard explicitly refused to share the name of the song in the only recording of it). You can listen to a live version on youtube (apparently from the The Black Parade Is Dead DVD).
I think Sister to Sleep would’ve made a great fit for Revenge, it’s got similarities to Thank You for the Venom Where the intro goes “Sister, I’m not much a poet, but a criminal, and you never had a chance” It could mean the male demolition lover man is confessing to the “Sister” or the nun in the church of the unspeakable things he’s committed when killing a thousand evil men and therefore he says “Did I say too much? Sister to Sleep” or “What did I say to put Sister to Sleep?” since she passes out and suffered heart attack from hearing his sins. The lyrics left up for interpretation since the demo was lost. “So give me all your poison and give me all your pills” reminds me of “I’m putting on this medication. It rolls down my throat. This medication is evil, it’s almost everyday” since he is suffering from insomnia from restlessly trying to kill evil men at night otherwise he would get assassinated in his sleep, so he has to be alert 24/7. No wonder why he would suffer sleep paralysis.
There is also another song called "Still alive", which they recorded for Conventional Weapons in 2009, they showed it to the press and they even reviewed it.
it could be possible that Still Alive is an alternate title for one of the songs that were originally intended for Conventional Weapons that made it to Danger Days?
@@cha-cha-charlie nope, that song was meant to be on conventional weapons. You can check the little booklet of the album, the songs that had their original versions on conventional weapons were: "save yourself, I'll hold them back", "the only hope for me is you", "bulletproof heart" (that was called"trans am" for CC) and "party poison" (that was called"death before disco "). According to KERRANG, a little bit of the lyrics was: "we came here to rough up everyone we see, get off the stage and ask yourself: am I still alive?"
@@gemin.r.jyeah that song was supposed to be in the perspective of the fan that threw a shoe at Gerard at reading 2006, and the song apparently had a Brit-pop sound.
My girlfriend and I decided to go to their show at The Forum last minute and were met with this song as a part of the setlist. I honestly can’t believe how lucky we were to be a part of that experience
if sister to sleep was released on three cheers, it would've been in my top three favorite mychem songs for sure. i have a theory they're going to re-record sister to sleep, bury me in black, and desert song all for whatever album they have coming up in the future. a leak twitter said they booked studio time for next year, and i think they love these songs just as much as we do and are ready to give them the light they deserve, especially after playing all three on tour. heres to hoping!
That would be awesome! I wasn't aware of the leaked tweet, but we can absolutely hope that we might get a fully realized version of the song sooner than later 😏
In a interview Gerard says that “sister to sleep” is his favorite song. I hope you’re right about a future album. I’m sick with the thought of them never doing anything together again.
Some extra information. There’s actually two old live performances of sister to sleep available. The one that was posted in 2009 that you mentioned as well as a soundcheck performance from the same show at the Knitting Factory 2003. Both these versions have different lyrics (and now of course the version from 2022) th-cam.com/video/R0Qp925QwTU/w-d-xo.html Now that they played sister to sleep live I hope there’s a chance of a possible re-recorded studio version (or the original) to drop. I also feel like anythings possible after playing a deep cut are rare as that one. Im hoping they play somebody out there loves you another unreleased that thy played live a few times back in the day (there’s quite a few old unreleased actually. I saw another commenter mention still alive)
Also, I have a feeling next year MCR will release a 20th anniversary edition of Revenge w/ Sister to Sleep re-recorded, demo version or even both included since it’s vaulted in WB studio regardless if MCR lost their copies it just depends on their relationship with the label. It’s just because revenge and black parade are the two most popular MCR albums and TBP got a 10th anniversary release. Green day had a 25th anniversary of both insomniac and nimrod, and next year they’re having a 30th anniversary of dookie, so I don’t see why it isn’t possible for MCR to do a 20th anniversary celebration of their revenge era.
You raise a great point! Means we might have something to look forward to. Even if their relationship with the label isn't good, the label will do whatever they can to make money off the recordings so long as they own the masters. Just depends on if they signed a new deal to release new music really
I find it rather interesting that a lot of the scrapped songs off of three cheers also would have been some of the most hardcore songs on the album. The snippets we’ve heard sound metal as heck.
Something really cool that could happen is that it could somehow get onto season 2 of Sandman, but I know that’s some hardcore wishful thinking. It would be a really cool sort of full circle event
@@anndynegative yep their last LA show at the forum, they played it right after Foundations, second song of the night. I lost my absolute shit. It sounds like the demo Matt leaked but it also sounds like some of the lyrics have been reworked, like they maybe weren’t able to relearn the parts they couldn’t hear and had to write them afresh.
I heard from somewhere can’t remember that the band don’t like to play that song live because every time they do something goes wrong so they just prefer not too apparently they’ve only played it live like 4 times
Billy Cobb recently released what will probably be the closest thing to a studio version of sister to sleep. I would highly recommend it to any mcr fans

I believe this song would've been perfect right after TYFTV bc this song feels like he's threatening to kill her, while STS is about his regrets

I just wanted to point out that it was available as a live recording well before 2009. I had it in 2003 from limewire
That makes sense, would be tough to track down on limewire today tho hahah
