Same here. I’m literally the only angler in my family. Working on getting my daughter more interested. She caught her first bass a week ago so she’s well in her way
Rod, reel and a jig. Left all my other lures at home. Fished that jig all day and caught my PB 6.3lbs bass. It was painful, but well worth. Keep throwing the jig and you will love the results.
Gene, you really do so much for the bass fishing community. No gimmicks, no selling, no click bait, just passion for fishing and teaching. You, Glenn may, and the Travian bassin guys are the only ones I can watch (very occasionally Tyler Reels). But I've learned more technique specific stuff from you. Anytime i need to know how to do something i just Google it , ie. "How to tie a fg knot flukemaster". You can tell when someone truly loves teaching, that's why I sick to my main 3 channels. You should do a video with the tactical bassin guys, i belive they do stuff for/ with tackle wharehouse.
I always watch my line on the jig's initial fall after splash down. I am ready to set the hook at the slightest line twitch. I have caught several nice bass this way. You can miss these bites if not paying attention. When you cast to "bassy" looking areas such as structure, drop offs, holes, and ledges, this can happen fairly often.
Gotta love a good jig fishing video! Thanks for sharing Gene! I basically learned to fish from your videos when I first started about 8 or 9 years ago. Thanks for all you do and keep inspiring people to get outside and fish 🎣
I fish a jig daily, football in Rocky situations and swim jig on most others. I cut the skirt at the back of the hook, the skirt at the front I pull forward and cut it 1/8" in front of line tie. I always trim my guard like Gene did, if it's too stiff I'll pull 1-2 bristles until it's to my liking. Cast out and hold on, the jig always works every time.
Great tips! Fished with jigs and minnows in Canada many times. I've occasionally fished for bass since 1967. Got into kayak bass fishing full time in 2019. I have learned a lot of new techniques from you, Chad, other TH-camrs and the local community. Keep up the informative content.
I love jig fishing! Caught some of my biggest on blue and black. One of my favorite go-to's, that blue and black strike king will always be in my bag! Slow and low!
I appreciate how you really went into explaining the retrieve. So many videos talk about which bait to use and when, but fail to talk about how to work the bait. Thanks.
About three years ago I started looking for tips to help graduate from a guy that fishes, to a fisherman. I've fished my whole life, but it's dumbfounding how much I didn't know. Simple things like the difference between tips of line and when to use them and different rod actions. I upgraded my Zebco 303s and Walmart specials to Lews and Abu Garcia combos, and started trying to figure out how to use things other than crank baits. So far, this is the best video I've found on jigs. I got a few bass on his last year, but this simple shot video taught me A LOT about how I was using them wrong. Thanks!!! Now I'm just waiting for the ice to melt so I can put away my ice fishing gear and start FISHING again!!!!
Ive always said i have more equipment than actual fishing skills!! Thank you for the pointers, i REALLY want to accomplish jig fishing, now im one step closer!!
Good advice. I'm definitely going to put it to work and see how I do. I always struggle with a jig but I have caught a lot on the bitsy bug jig but it's way smaller. I have the same struggles with a chatterbait. I still have not caught a fish or had a bite on one. I think it's just a confidence thing and I know I'm usually in a good spot because I usually switch to a crankbait and just hammer them.
When you cut the weed guard on a jig, it actually makes it harder to collapse due to less leverage than a longer one. It does help make it more weedless though.
Yeah, but you're not really cutting a lot off, at least in this case. sometimes, if you do, you can snip away one or two guard bristles, to help it out.
@@jholl7339 correct. If I want my weed guard to be less stiff, I remove some of the bristles. I get clients on guide trips all the time that are cutting them because they think it makes it softer but it's the other way around.
My go to jig is actually a swim jig in minnow color made by strike king. It works in Every lake, pond, or river I fished. It just works. Black and blue works most of the the time but only in some lakes from my own experience in the Midwest.
Dude your videos are so full of gold. I'll be watching a video on the best bait to use in August and I get a whole lesson of how bass act every hour of the day. Your videos are like fishing university!
Great tip thanks just starting learning to fish the jig question for you if the area your fishing is extremely weedy do you just look for the pockets to fish or try and work the weed line I’m fishing from a kayak
Where I do most of my fishing a jig in peanut butter and jelly with a purple netbait paca chunk and it's very productive on bass. I also use black and blue and if the water is stained I use a white jig with a strike king white lobster trailer or a black jig and a red lack fork craw trailer very good in dirty water.

Thanks for your vids. I'm fairly new to fishing. Put a jig on the line and from a low walk bridge stuck it in the water to see what it looked like and WHAM, caught a little 12" bucket mouth as soon as the lure got wet. The coolest thing ever! That was three or four months ago and, although I've lost a few lures, I never caught anything with a jig since. I'll try you technique and see what happens. Thanks pal.
To me I use jigs to pick apart an area. Football heads for rocks and hard bottoms, typically deeper. Flipping for light weed cutting. I go by weight based off of time of the year, lighter for when they're lethargic for a slower fall. Heavier for a more aggressive bite. Really nice when you know they're there but not sure where. Around logs and shadows. 2-3 flips and try a new spot. Googan trailer is less aggressive then the rage tail for less aggressive times. But the rage tail or X Zone is a good aggressive presentation.
That's a great advice , fish with only a jig for a few times. I would get discouraged and go back to a worm. Just because I know I can catch something. I'm still learning how to fish with a jig. So I will take your advice.
My favorite technique for my rocky deep home lake is a 3/4 oz swing jig and rage craw trailer. X heavy 7 1/2 ft rod with flouro carbon line. Absolutely smash 4lb smallies in 15 to 25 ft of water this way.
i like jigs when i flip to cover in the summer .they help punch the bait thru the pads and a little faster drop. if it's cold i will just flip unweighted baits to slow the presentation
