This is exactly the video I was looking for. I haven’t had a proper shave in just over 10 years. I’ve been using an electric razor for quickness. Decided I needed to shave again and forgot the basics. I didn’t want to use cartridge blades as they just shred your face. So I bought this set. I’ve never used a safety blade before. I’m now looking forward to shaving again after watching this video. Refreshing my memory on how to have a decent shave.
Clean, prepare, shave, protect - four steps to a great shave! Thanks Geo, as usual you have delivered a thorough, informative, educational and I dare say inspirational video lesson. I can’t believe how you get me excited about shaving - which I have hated doing for many years. With your help, I’m slowly getting better with a DE blade. And I love seeing your bike too, man. Ride safe.
Morning Geo. I like how you describe the shave perfectly step by step. Great shave. I bought the KCG and have used it several times and find with the Feather Blade it does a good job. Enjoy your day.
Never did I think I'd be watching a grown man shave by choice. Still waiting for my dad to come back with milk, so figured I'd learn how to shave on TH-cam while I wait for him.
After decades of happily using safety razors and two years of occasionally using the King C. Gillette safety razor, I must keep on saying it's a good razor. I wish I had it in stainless steel and with a knurled handle. Really a good razor.
Geo - great video! You’re still my favorite; tempo, technique, presentation, and the way only you do it. Top of the class! BTW- I don’t know what it is about this razor and it’s brand blades, but I get a fantastic shave every time with less surgeon-like focus that other demand. Thanks for covering and confirming what I found out just before you started this series of videos. Thank you Sir!
Good video. Although the King C head seems to be similar to the merkur one, from my experience I can say that it's a bit less mild (or more aggresive) than the merkur 34C. Same impression when compared to the Mühle R89.
I live in Dubai and the "traditional shave" is with clear gel.. Prep is :warm towel, clear gel and finish off with warm towel. However this gel doesn't produce any kind of foam, cream.. majority of the barber shops are following this method

geofatboy I started with the Muhle R89, then I picked up the Parker R22 cause I loved the look of it (ended up cutting the hell out of my face and neck with it). Building a list on your website with a Feather Razor on it but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Also thinking about getting Merker 34C but I’m not sure if it’s too similar to my Muhle to get it. Thank you for all your vids. They’re a joy to watch and have helped
Manic MTG I have a few Merkurs including the 34 in chrome and gold. I've tried the Weishi twist to open and found it too mild. The Merkur 34G has become my favourite maybe because it shaves well and it looks great 😊

Hi Mechanic, I wonder if you have lighter colored hair, blonde for example. Giving you softer whiskers. If so, to aggressive of a razor, like an open comb; or adjustable on to high of a setting, would account for the blessing during the shave. I have black hair, and as such, very course whiskers. I have one of the Pawn Stars TTO and it is very mild, even with my preferred Feather blades. Then I have a two piece slant that is extremely aggressive. The former, three passes to just get a shaven feeling. The latter, one pass and my face is begging for mercy. But in that one pass, I'm done for at least two days. Try a different razor. And I recommend Feather blades because they are so sharp. Less pulling and dragging, and only needs a lite touch. All is easier on the face.
geofatboy is it possible that some people’s face or skin types do not allow going against the grain? Or maybe only in certain places? It seems ok on my cheeks and side burn areas but not for my neck area.

@@MrJpiarull You are exactly the person to use a DE safety razor, as it sounds like you have growth like I do. I'd recommend, oh I hate to say cheap, but the Pawn Stars twist to open type as a first razor. ShaveNation has some of these for around the $20.00 range. I also recommend Feather blades. They are the sharpest, and you'll hear plenty of whining and crying about how sharp they are. But your objective is to cut hair, and no barber uses dull scissors, so why use a dull blades to shave? Cremco is a good soap, Geo seems to like Proso, and others do to. But I'd say get some in a tube, a bowl and brush, and learn to lather with the least amount of water it takes to get a lather. Take some time and let the brush really work that into your whiskers. Applying lather is the slowest part of my shave, but I've found to be the most important with my heavy course whiskers. As for the brush, everyone had an opinion, mine, with heavy whiskers is to get a natural badger or horse hair brush. Synthetics are useless for me, and I have a stiff boar hair, but it doesn't seem to lather as well.
@@Rood67 interesting. I was going to say you don't recommend the wooden handle $400 feather one? For me I'm willing to spend more if it cuts closer and smoother every day or every other. I'm never a fan of the cheaper variety products when it comes to personal grooming.
Question: Looking for a comparable razor to the merkur 34c for my husband. Is the Kin C close? I see it's a bit more aggressive but is it very different? My husband get horrible razor bumps. Would the King C be mild enough for him?
I have a question. I’ve been using a safety razor by the brand Bevel for about 3 years. So I’m not really a rookie with a safety razor. However I have never gotten a smooth close shave. When I try to shave with grain & side to side & finally against the grain, my face still gets irritated for about 3 days. So I’ve stopped going side to side and against. My question is, when guys say they get a smooth close shave, is that only with the grain or is that against the grain as well when your touching your face? Basically Is it natural to still feel stubble when touching your face against the grain?
I think that's normal. I've been shaving with my Henson mild razor for a few weeks now and it performs about the same as the Harry's cartridges I previously used. Some areas are very smooth but I can still feel a little stubble in others. I'm fortunate that my face isn't terribly irritated by a second pass against the grain, but I am working on my technique so that a second pass isn't necessary. I'm not trying to pass inspection, just look good for my day.
I have always shaved against the grain, so if I shave the “normal” way with the king c gilette double safety razor it doesnt cut any hair at all. I really have to shave against the grain😅
Yes. Which is why I DE wet shaving now. Now don't take me as an elitist from that first comment. I still own and use Rolling Razor, their other brand The Defender, and a Head Blade (the one with the wheel attached). However, with any cartridge, I go for the least number of blades, with the widest gap. I DE my face and scalp, but I use the cartridge type for around my ears and smooth up on my scalp. The DE is cheap and takes off the major portion of stubble. Then one cartridge last me for months instead of days. I believe in using the right tools for the job. The DE is the heavy lifter, and the others are the clean up crew on my scalp. For my face though, it's DE all the way.
Shit, I came here to see whats up with the transparent shaving gel cause it sounded like a dream for me, but one thing for sure - it aint transparent.... [edit] I guess it's transparent if u dont massagge it like crazy :)
All these products and steps is absolutely unnecessary. Literally unnecessary. Get yourself a cheap $5 magnifying mirror, hop in the shower, go through your routine shampoo/body wash steps, THEN use a simple shave butter. Shave your face. Done.

Step 3
Conditioning with the Soft Beard Balm with cocoa butter smoothes out rough edges and leaves the beard feeling soft, light and touchable.
Step 4
For a deep conditioning beard mask, let the balm sit for three minutes and then rinse.

Unfortunately I can´t use Gilette products, as it reacts with my toxic masculinity.
It's okay the left now supports toxic masculinity as long as you're looting and beating female cops.

King C Gillette is clapping in his coffin.
All these products and steps is absolutely unnecessary. Literally unnecessary. Get yourself a cheap $5 magnifying mirror, hop in the shower, go through your routine shampoo/body wash steps, THEN use a simple shave butter. Shave your face. Done.
Some do it like that. Some don't. To each their own.
