    I think regens are cool because they use so few parts and still perform well.
    I just finished a direct conversion receiver.
    It works great, but there was a great deal more complexity.
    It's all fun.
    Keep making stuff !!!

      Thanks so much. And yes I agree. That is why I love regens as well. Great sensitivity too. Good luck with all your projects also. 73

    Several years ago I had a breif online discussion with Mr K about this very circuit, according to him with minimal adjustments to biasing you can build this with any low signa low noise J-Fet.
    also the grounded base amplifier is there to isolate antenna and radio, both to avoid any antenna movement detuning a SSB or CW signal causing "sway" and avoiding any interference from a slightly oscillating receiver "broadcasting"

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes that is totally true... on both subjects. I only have a little issue with the biasing at the moment. It doesn't seem right as the CW signals should sound really pleasant to my ears. But they sound somehow distorted now. Is like a signal that is not properly demodulated. I know that the tranzistor in this case also plays the role of a BFO at the same time as it does the other jobs. So I need to find the fine adjustment on the bias in order to make it sound as I please 😁😁. P.S. Is a great receiver though.

    Very good job! I read about a high sensitivity (roughly 1microVolt) of a BJT regen (transistor in barrier mode). But in regen there are usually only one LC circuit. Any LC circuit has poor selectivity , even quality is high. It means you will hear a more strong station even you tuned on a week station. In your receiver you have a capacitor with two sections. Try to add an additional LC selective circuit BEFORE input. It may be a coil - like in your regen, that would be located on 2-5 Inches from the main coil of the regen. Connect an antenna to part (or separate winding) of this additional coil. It much increase selectivity - especially in AM band.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Ohh I should really try that. Is basically like a preselector and for sure is much better with that. God idea indeed.

    I really like regenerative receivers. I have not built one since 2010 and I wish I still had it and the design I used for it worked really well.
    I do have several, but not home built like the one from ten plus years ago & I plan to build another this winter along with SolderSmoke's Direct Conversion Receiver that they designed as a beginner's project.
    I pick up every 1970's stereo or radio I can find at a thrift store to harvest variable compacitors to use in projects such as this and for mag loop antennas.
    Good luck on your modification and future builds...73 & DE Kc2wvb.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The board I had was a present received from one of my subscribers. I didn't had the time to make a design so I used that one to test the receiver. Give me about a week and I will make some time to design a PCB and write an article about it and describe there a few more things.

  • @sv2tcb
    @sv2tcb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello! First and for most, nice built and the coil is very compact. I would like to have a look at the back of the pcb( you may have shown the back in this video but probably I didn't notice). For the variable capacitor, I have two of them and similarly I keep reusing them for my projects, the only solution is varicaps for diode tuning. Furthermore, diode tuning is cheaper and is more suitable for small projects. The receiver is actually very hard to tune for amateur operators because it covers a wide range of frequencies, making this to cover even more frequencies it will be nearly impossible to tune. The pcb must be redesigned as you said for such a small circuit the pcb is too big and maybe this is another factor which makes harder the tuning. For me if you want to add an audio amp stage, try using a td2002 instead of the lm386. To drive the td2002 you also need an one transistor amp stage before. The td2002 can drive a speaker easily without distortion. In conclusion, some modifications should be made for the circuit to operate better but for the first test it functioned quite well.

      Thanks for watching Nikos. The PCB was really nicely done and designed as well. Its big indeed... but so is the coil )) I like the fact that Hendrik designed the PCB with ought the audio amp... so that gives me the freedom to pick the one I want. 73 my friend.

    Hi Chip, thank you for the very interesting comparison. I have the Scout Regen from Pacific Antenna. It's the same circuit. I think I have all the regen radios that were released as kits. I love building regen radios! Recently I built a direct conversion receiver using a sampling detector (basically half a quadrature sampling detector). It works really well. Of course it does not eliminate the opposite side band but in practice it's no so bad. Looking forward to your sailing channel. I do get a chance to have a go in a sailing dinghy occasionally. Take care, 73, VK7IAN

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Ian. I have a few more regens to build on the list. The Scout is one of them as well )) similar design indeed. Then as I was telling to Nigel in an earlier comment... I also want to jump on the direct conversion receivers as it gets boring building only regens haha. The one here in the video needs a few more adjustments made. Basically I recorded in the evening when the propagation was nice a few hours after finishing it. I'm sure it can do a lot better with a few more adjustments. Thanks so much again for watching. Maybe next week I have time to make a video for the sailing Channel too. And if things work well... maybe I do videos about amateur radio from a boat later on as I really want to be back on water. I miss it like crazy. I don't seem to get used to life on land after floating for nearly half of my life )) 73 and have a nice weekend.

    Hi there, nice video. Where can I buy this kit?

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know to be honest. If I remember well qrpguys.com used to have something similar for sale... but I don't think they sell it anymore right now. This board was just a present from one of the subscribers to the channel.

    • @jeromewysocki8809
      @jeromewysocki8809 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, unfortunately, qrp guys no longer has this kit available. Fortunately, they are offering the PSC boards for $10. You then download the manual from their web site, and build the radio, by supplying all of your own parts. I really wish they still had the kit available. It seems that no one else offers a regen rcvr kit anymore, so I guess we must make our own.
      I've had success building my own regents using vacuum tubes, such as 6SK7 and the smaller 12BA6. I'd run them with a plate voltage of 36 volts (four 9 volt batteries in series) and they sound just as good as the excellent receiver you show here on this TH-cam video. Like you, I LOVE regenerative receivers. You get a lot of bang for your buck.

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately yes is no longer availabe. No wonder as to be honest people these days prefere to build stuff based on Arduino and codes and all that fancy stuff. I prefer older analog circuits, so a regen for me will always make me happy way more than any "modern" digital thing.

    Ciprian, I think Hendricks board seems a little bit more selective than Sputnik. I think we can all agree we've reached the point diminishing returns for a simple design. Very nice little coil there.Happy listening. You can try the MPF102 in place of the J310 should be no issues with biasing. Looks like you need more chinesium capacitors lol

    • @dxexplorer
      @dxexplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha... yes for sure on both the capacitors issue.. and also I had enough of the Sputnik myself lol. I'm just going over the Sputnik now as I'm working on the blog article about the second version... and also I want to build the first one for myself as I first intended to. Just a tiny one. Meanwhile... indeed Hendrik designed a really nice board... and with the frequency counter and little bits and pieces I will soon ad to it... it will turn into a beast ))) I really love it. I do use the MPF102 you sent me. I did not had any J310. I think I only have three more regenerative receivers on my list of to do things.... and I'm done. I honestly had enough as they all seem to work the same. In performance I don't notice any difference.. nothing major at least. I'd like to play with a few direct conversion receivers next... and then get a little more sophisticated ))) 73 Nigel.

      It is as built using the original schematic. But I think with minor changes and a few improvements... it can be a really great receiver.
