    This was a beautiful work of art. You sir are a master of the lathe, IMHO

    Man you are Good! I really enjoyed watching you make that. And I learned so much. You see I just bought a lathe. And I know how hard that is.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks again for watching. This kind of pen allows our creativity to show better than kit pens, in my opinion.

    A stunning pen John and ergonomic too! I thought you was going to turn a trapped ring on the pen when you was shaping the bead near the top of the pen! But a beautiful figure in the oak, thanks for sharing.
    Cheers

      Thank you. :) This kind of pen also allows more creative freedom than a kit pen.

    ink will stop flowing in a day or 2 without an air inlet above the refill, apart from that very nicely done

    Go by a music store that services guitars and they probably give or sell you a set of uses guitar strings, The work GREAT for burning and provide different sizes for different widths burns...

    Would mounting your copper wire in an old hacksaw handle help save your fingers from burns?

    • @RoundaboutWoodworks1
      @RoundaboutWoodworks1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. :) Yes. A hacksaw handle would have been much better.

    Much more economical than kits and we are not locked in. We can be as creative as we wish. John, is it difficult replacing the refills by using small pliers?

    • @RoundaboutWoodworks1
      @RoundaboutWoodworks1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a long enough 5/32" bit they go in and come out easily with fingers. If the hole is only 1/8" then you will need pliers. The pens are usually lost before they run out of ink. :)

    Is there a difference between a rouging gouge and a spindle gouge?

    • @RoundaboutWoodworks1
      @RoundaboutWoodworks1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A roughing gouge is a concave shape, the same thickness from side to side. Think of a wide skew chisel ground square and bent over a piece of pipe. A spindle gouge is made of round bar with a channel ground out of it. It is thicker in the center of the edge, and the sides are much thinner. I don't own a roughing gouge. I prefer to rough with a skew. I hope my explanation makes sense.

    what kind of wire do you use in 13:50 ?

    • @RoundaboutWoodworks1
      @RoundaboutWoodworks1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a piece of copper wire.

    • @markb8954
      @markb8954 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any wire works. It’s best to have a bit of a dowel on each end of the wire - the dowel won’t heat up.

    why only use the skew chissel?

    • @RoundaboutWoodworks1
      @RoundaboutWoodworks1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The skew is my favorite and most used tool because it's so versatile. Any tool will work but I'm used to reaching for a skew first. On very small coves I use a spindle gouge.
