I came across this today and came home and got started making one for me. I think this saves me close to $75. One thing I did change was, instead of having wood on the end of the threaded stock, I added a sealed bearing. I think it will work well. Thank you for posting this!

I noticed that the white blocks were moving too much. I think that you should install 2 1/2" wood rails between the end blocks. This will take the play out of the two white ends. Thank you for postimg this. It is a great idea for a tool with 2 functions.

I turned a couple MTV arbors out of HDPE and use the lathe. I made a block of wood the length of the barrel section of the pen with the transmission installed. Now I just push the transmission in until the block stops me and it is set to the perfect length every time. Works for slims, euro's and my cartridge pens.

Great idea.. just as a quick fix you could recess the plastic into the stationary end just to get that extra space if needed. Thanks for the videos. They are fun to watch.

+Fern Moore thanks for the great idea i will set it in over the next week or so. I already changed the handle to a larger wheel with a few spokes, makes turning a lot faster and easier.

Nice build. I think i will try this when i get into pen turning. Its high on my wishlist.
I might put two guide rails in with the hdpe blocks being a bit wider. I think it would be a bit more stable that way.

vrij man van goede naam Good idea. I think that would be a nice enhancement. If I build another, I will also set the receiving hdpe into the block of wood.

Good job Chuck I make my own hdpe parts out of milk jugs / bottles it's a great material and it also takes a thread ,and is very strong you might be able to build more of the press in the material thanks for the idea. Mark

+mark lawson Thanks Mark, It never occurred to me to use milk jugs etc for hdpe. I will try to get creative this upcoming winter and see if I can pull together an improved version. Thanks for watching and the positive comments.

Nice video. I have never bought a pen vice. I do all of my assembly on the lathe.

I had the same idea . Thanks for proving that it will work.
Did you try to dissemble the Commercial Pen Press and use the parts to make your homemade press? Suggest you add a 2 inch "V" block to hold the pen body while pressing in the pen parts

+redriver08 thanks for watching, with the prototype shown in this video I enhanced the knob to make turning the press easier by making a wheel with two spokes which sped up the pressing process. I plan to make a new unit utilizing the turn screw and hdpe piece from the old unit. I will likely play with the press handle to see if I can some how smooth and speed up the pressing. Once finished I will show it on an upcoming video. appreciate your watching

Brilliant Idea and build Chuck, I wonder would a crank type handle be a little more user friendly for us more impatient pen turners. Great video and a very well explained build. Thanks for sharing. Also I have been trying to email you but the email address on your channel page don't work?
    All the best.

+Spencer Brown Thanks for watching. In addition to drilling, I am finding it to be a pretty handy vise for blanks and tubes when i don't want to mar the product, especially with the HDPE. Good Luck and have fun.

Great - pity about the expensive kit that went wrong, but I love home made solutions.

+Kaged Creations thanks for the feedback, I use it in the shop quite a bit, although it is a little "clunky" but it seems to get the job done. some day I will try to get creative again and come up with a new and improved version.

Probably even less time, but sometimes i don't approach solutions logically, especially as i grow older.

      No way.
Its failed once, it will fail again.
You would have to fit some cross bracing to stop it happening. More hassle than than it's worth.
      This is a great solution...
