  • In this video we visit the town of New Mills in the high peak in Derbyshire. We look at the old mills that used to be in the area. These old mills were driven by waterwheels powered by the river Goyt. New Mills and in particular the Torrs area is fantastic littered with historical clues from its Industrial past. Leats, and tailraces and old industrial archeology. We also walk along the Millenium Walkway by the river Goyt. An elevated walkway with excellent views of the Goyt Valley. Then we visit our friend who keeps bees. Pete has his own Apiary and we have a go at Beekeeping. learning about the bees and the pollen and the honey. We also manage to spot the Queen bee.

Peter and his bees - utterly fascinating, Martin. It passed my 'I did not know that' test, with flying colours. Peter is an interesting bloke, who obviously loves his bees. Bees are possibly the oldest domesticated animal of them all - and simply because humans have a sweet tooth.
    Thank you for that.

Genuinely one of the best films I've ever seen about bee keeping. I've seen similar pieces on telly loads of times, but they always seem to assume the viewer has the attention span of a gnat, or be too focussed on being "entertaining". Thanks to all concerned.

Brilliant Martin. I love your videos and was surprised to see the bees. I've been keeping them since 2020 and yours and Pete's straightforward explanations of beekeeping are the clearest of any TH-cam videos I've seen. Better filming of the bees than many time-served beekeepers. Thank you for everything you've produced from an ex-Prestonian now living in Scotland.

Respect to all beekeepers. Find it hard to know what to wear around the bees. They get mad at red, but if you wear pale colours they sometimes think youre a flower and come to pollinate you. Very nice video lads, they really should show this in schools. I hope there are some teachers out there who agree.

what a fantastic video: incredible to see the remains of the New Mill (must have been something to see, back when it was still in operation, before the fire! Even now the complex seems very large, to me at least) My parents started keeping bees, after they retired: really wholesome hobby. Cheers for making & uploading these videos, Martin :)

Thanks Martin that was fantastic, New Mills is a great old place but I love Bees and Peter is a 'Hive' of knowledge and explained loads of interesting facts. I've never understood why people are so scared of bees or even wasps and they all have their jobs to do keeping us alive. Bees keep our food growing and even Wasps help keep the pests at bay to help feed us. Take care and all the best. Stevie

Hi Martin, that was a really interesting video, especially about the beautiful Honey Bee's, they are so important to life not only for the honey but for helping to pollinate most of the food that is grown all over the world, so without them we would not be here today and neither would the animals that rely on nuts and berries. Please guys don't use pesticides in your garden as it is literally killing off these amazing insects.
The location where you were filming the mill was such a great place, it's really good to see places like that saved even if they are in ruins as it helps educate the younger generations. Thank you for making and sharing this video, much love. xx ❤

A bit late to the party, I've binged watched a large number of these interesting & informative yet humourous films, watching this one a couple of nights ago. Yesterday I had a work trip to Manchester and had lunch with a mate, who I'd not seen for a while. Whilst he lives in Manchester, his workplace is outside. He sent me the postcode, which turned out to be in New Mills. He took me to "a nice local cafe", which turned out to be in the old mill next to the Millennium walkway! 😲 After lunch we traversed the walkway and looked at the Community funded/managed Archimedes Screw, the climbing walls etc. A really lovely place and I will have to come back for a longer look. Thanks for the great film Martin! 😀 (The bees portion of the film was interesting too). 🙂

Hi Martin, I discovered your channel about a month ago and have been watching all the videos from the beginning. I loved this one as my maternal great grandparents oiginated from New Mills. Lots of my ancestors worked in the mills and one of my great great grandfather's was a foreman platelayer on the railways around the area. My 4 x great grandfather was born in Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1804. I blame you for my lack of sleep recently because I'm sat up until the early hours watching 😂.

New Mills. That name rang a bell. It's the home of the great sweet manufacturer, Swizzels Matlow. Their fizzy sweets, and 'Drumstick' chewy lollies, of which I must have literally eaten tons of, as a kid, kept many a dentist in business.
Beautiful part of the country, Martin, and some top weather for you gents, too. If you're in that part of the world, have a look at the definitely eerie remains of Errwood Hall. It features in the Alan Garner novel 'The Moon Of Gomrath'.
