Haddon Hall disused Railway Tunnel. Why build it ?

  • Haddon Hall railway tunnel is a disused railway tunnel in Derbyshire Peak district England UK. The abandoned railway line was closed in the Beeching British rail cuts during 1968. This was because the line was duplicated as a trans pennine route across England. The tunnel was never needed to be built it was only built for aesthetic reasons primarily because The Duke of Rutland did not want Steam trains passing across his land. So it was buried underground. Built by the Midland railway company in 1861 it is another fine example of Victorian engineering. We explore this railway walk with Paul and Rebecca Whitewick from every disused station.

    Classic example of the UK short-term transportation planning. How very useful a St-Pancras to Manchester link would be today; not to mention the scenic offerings via the Peak District, it would be a line people would travel on just for the scenery

    Hats off to you Martin. I live here & have only ever seen the tunnel from the 'Lake' end just below the Bowling Green Farm where I laid most of the hedge in Derbyshire style using only hand tools (My claim to fame). In due course this tunnel will be part of the Monsall Trail. My understanding is that Haddon Estate has already given permission for Sustrans to continue the Monsall Trail through the Haddon 'Tunnel' so it will link The Trans Penine Bike Trail Buxton to Matlock There's a bit of work still to be done mind from Combes Road viaduct to the 'Lake-entrance'. I admire your love of things old and architectural.

    This line wasn't a casualty of the Beeching Cuts. The Beeching Report recommended keeping the line open and developing it as a through route. It was closed by Transport Minister Barbara Castle.
    Good video as usual Martin.

    • @Zentron
      @Zentron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, sadly she had a bit of thing against the railway for some reason, so the promises of reversing Beeching went by the wayside and she closed much of the lines and stations laid out in the report and many others beyond it. That said, MacMillan should never have been elected Prime Minister, him and Marples have a lot to answer for!

      @@Zentron Marples fled abroad, said to be evading a tax bill. He also was on becoming Transport Minister had to sell his shares in his haulage empire, which he did, to his wife!

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes - Beeching gets blamed for a lot of line closures but it was Minister of Transport Marples (a Managing Director of a road construction organisation) who directed him to force through the recommendations almost entirely without any independent review. Barbara Castle then added to the pain, nearly always in favour of roads.

    • @Zentron
      @Zentron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SteamRoller605 Yup, he did that to get around the laws governing taking public office, sadly the loophole he used to skirt this law is still in place today!
      The company he had shares in built a few of the M roads near me, and the rail line that went through my town was sacrificed in order to justify its construction, this sacrifice pretty much killed off every bit of industry for all the towns the line went through for which none have recovered.
      Unfortunately this scenario is repeated up and down the country, plus from checking some financial info, the cuts by laid out by Beeching and after, when the railways began being dismantled, our industry took a nosedive, so in effect, the rail cuts destroyed our worth in the world.

    Martin, I have said it before, but repetition is good for the soul: You are a MARVELOUS storyteller. I had seen Paul & Rebecca's video before seeing yours. Much footage was the same or similar. The facts, save for the death of the 15-year-old, seemed the same, but your organization, suspense, context, are genuinely superior. Now I love Paul and Rebecca, and I do support them, too, but some people have been granted a gift from the gods, and you have it. You can tell a story. Thank you for telling your stories to us.

    Regarding the single sleeper, it has a broken chair. The usual method of removing track for scrap is to cut the rails into lengths that will fit on the wagons being used, and lift both rails and sleepers as one. The chair would mean this sleeper wasn't attached to one of the rails and would likely fall off during the lift. It has no scrap value, so would have been left.

    Nicely filmed Martin! Of course always love your colabs with the Whitewicks! This tunnel that was pointless except to appease one person, was still built with mainly cut stone instead of brick! The cost must have been high! That center part that had been opened was very unique and beautiful! I also enjoyed you putting the camera into some small and wet areas! • @ValeriePallaoro

    Great video of a tunnel with some rather unusual features, imcluding side buttresses and ending in a lake - where i suspect you were rather glad to beat a hasty retreat to drier ground.

    Thank you Martin . I always enjoyn your videos. I wish that some day I can afford to go on one of your explores. I will bring spoons for a James brew up and some Scotish short bread. Mark Munro.
