    I hope no one watches this and thinks drilling holes in the case is a good thing for airflow. It’s not. This can actually disrupt the air flow for other vital components even IF it drops cpu/gpu temps a little. Never do that if you’re watching this. I’ve never seen someone make a video on something like this when they obviously have no clue what’s going on with cooling or components on the motherboard. “Burnt” components? Lol. No.

    It’s people like you that are crucial for preserving older technology and teaching others to do the same. Great video!

    I am sure you have learned a lot since this video came out. It is great seeing young people tear stuff open to fix it! That being said, I have a few tips that might help you out on future projects. It looked like you were using 70% Isopropyl alcohol. Most electronics repair regulars would suggest using 99%. I use 91% which I can still get at the pharmacy for cheap and will dry faster than 70%. After cleaning paste off of the chip, refrain from touching it with your fingers. That will leave oil on the surface that could interfere with the paste doing it's job. As others have stated, the amount of paste could be cut down. I use a clean credit card and make the layer as thin as possible. That way when you compress the heatsink, it doesn't go over the motherboard. Almost all good quality paste is nonconductive, but it makes clean up easier for the next guy (which could be you!). Cheers and keep doing what you are doing!

      Just don't use 91% from Family Dollar, as that stuff leaves a film.

    That stuff what you called is flux it help when you soldering something and cpu is called CELL/BE and BE stand for BROADBAND ENGINE and GPU is from NVIDIA 7900 series and that's all you need to know about your PS3

    I have a 2008 big case PS3 that stopped putting out a video signal in 2013. It's been under my bed since. Lady week i took it to a shop for repair. They didn't want to mess with the motherboard since it appears to be a GPU failure or de-solder. I would really like to get it working again. It's in like-new condition. I wish Sony would offer a repair service. They had to know these machines have problems.

    If you take apart the button assembly and run some wires, you can enable hidden LEDs in the corner that look cool

    So happy that you're deciding to cover this! I'm very eager to get into cooling improvements/mods.
    The thing that scares me a little though is the components on the motherboard. I assume like with a PC it's possible to damage some of the components with electrostatic discharge. Is that something you have to be careful with?
    I'm not the most steady handed person in the world, especially with stuff like this but you didn't seem too concerned here.

    • @RoblesJunior
      @RoblesJunior  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you have to be careful, you will need to make sure to get yourself grounded. I have been working with this kind of stuff for years and I have many years as a cell tech. I do not use them because I don't discharge at all.

    • @halenmartini6705
      @halenmartini6705 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest thing you have to be careful with when servicing the PS3 is not applying too much force when removing the heat sink from the chips. Sometimes the old thermal paste acts like glue and requires force to remove it. If you put too much force, you can damage the solder connections under the chips. Usually you can solve this by rubbing the console before taking it apart because the heat unsticks the paste.

      I mean in all my time working with computer components I’ve never had actual electrostatic discharge to my components, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it, just make sure you are regularly touching something grounded to get rid of any static charge that you are picking up before it is enough to damage your components

    • @darthkahn45
      @darthkahn45 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@halenmartini6705 That's a great tip, thanks i'll definitely keep that in mind. Would you normally do it for a while to warm it up or only a few seconds?

    • @darthkahn45
      @darthkahn45 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dell-ol6hb Yeah I hear the best thing with a PC is simply the metal casing which I used to try to remember. But the last PC I brought in for repair the guy asked me if I knew what electrostatic discharge is and I was like "yyyeah? kind of?"
      Then he proceeded to scold me. Lesson learned but I won't go there again, that guy was mean lol.

  • @Lavoss05

    Your right Sony didnt use good paste at all but with that in mind you didnt change the past where it matters most which is directly on the chips themselves, you have to remove the heat spreaders in order to replace the thermal paste on the chips if you dont do that the heat wont be lifted from the chips and will go into the mother board and can cause all kinds of failure.
    I would recommend using Artic MX6 directly on the chips themselves.

  • @djlancematthew

    WOW! That was ALOT of thermal paste!!

  • @Gameplayery
    @Gameplayery ปีที่แล้ว +3

    WARNING ;
    if you put too much Paste, it's not gonna conduct heat efficiently, actually hindering the Processors ability to transfer heat out. That's why you put a LIGHT FILM, just enough for it to fill micro-cracks in the metals.

    • @MGlBlaze
      @MGlBlaze ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not really. What it *can* do is make a mess, and if the thermal paste is electrically conductive or capacitive it can cause problems by spilling over on to other components, but other than that any excess paste will simply get squeezed out along the sides of the processor IHS and heatsink cold plate. If the mount can't do that then it won't enough pressure to make proper thermal contact anyway.
      Too little thermal paste is usually the bigger concern.

      Yes you need it otherwise your system will overheat and destroy itself

  • @vioa1737
    @vioa1737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This won't actually help prolong your PS3s life. You need to delid the chips otherwise they burn out over time. There's a really good video by a German guy on exactly that. Please don't spread any misinfo, this does not help prolong any PS3s life.

    • @stephenallen4635
      @stephenallen4635 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a leaf out of your own book. Don't spread misinfo. Both of these will reduce temperatures, both of these will help... But one of them has a much greater risk of doing damage

    • @951258tike22
      @951258tike22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      pretty sure delidding is really only necessary on the early phats. bad TIM combined with the huge power consumption (heat output) pre die shrink is why delidding was necessary for those. but the slim only pulls like 90 watts from the wall

      I disagree, this would definitely prologue the PS3's life and have way better performance. A video testing this all out is coming out very soon to prove that it does help. Delid seems a little too much BUT now that we have a new firmware that allows us to overclock the chip I may have to take you up on that delid process. I am new to all this and still learning but the tests should prove otherwise.
