I think this really should have been a full video considering how influential the Mini was on the compact car industry, but it's great to see it making an appearance here nonetheless!
Mini video is more fitting lol!
@@erichellner956 quality comment
This the extra channel so it would naturally be shorter but maybe they'll see comments and do a full video on it.
Do you not understand how it works? Sometimes they can only get cars for a day or so and they can’t get the whole filming crew and spend a ton of time editing.
@@Dyltheboy dam dude. WTF. Why so harsh?
I love cars that keep the same design for years. This car kept basically the same 1959 design all the way until 2000.
Still a great looking car now
my favorite car
As an NC Miata owner I've heard that boat joke so many times but coming from James it hits extra hard for some reason. 😭
As a mini cooper and an NC Miata owner, I don't know if I should feel pleased or offended.
But is it really that boaty? Compared to e.g an NB Miata
I test drove 2 NBs before buying my NC and they honestly feel worse on the road, not to mention the complete lack of power. The factory suspension is soft, but putting decent coilovers on the NC pretty much gets rid of all the 'boatiness' and a lightly modified NC will almost certainly beat a similarly prepared NA or NB in autocross or track, without major engine mods. Yeah its about 150lbs heavier than an NB or ND but its still less than 2500lbs. Not even remotely a boat. 🙂
But NC miata has best rear end design in my opinion
@@hs5942 Definitely. My miata was ever-so-slightly lowered by the previous owner, has improved anti-roll bars & brakes (from the RX8), and now both looks and goes how it always should've. Honestly amazing how much better it is with such tiny tweaks!
Just sad I now have to sell it ;((
A fun car for a fun channel. Match made in heaven.
This is my favorite Mini Cooper all times. A masterpiece 😍
Really wish this was a full video! The classic mini deserves some love, the full cinematic treatment
Back when Minis were actually mini
yeah, mini is making now an electric CUV, what nonsense
Still one of the smallest cars out there though.
The first Gen BMW MINI was pretty small, the R56 gained a little size. The 3rd and 4th gens aren’t actually mini, you can thank Govt safety regulations for that.
Up until the r56 mini. They were still minis
You need to buy one and then compare all BMW grills to the size of a mini.
😁😅😂
The R53 MINI, while bigger than the Mini, was a really small vehicle. The R56 got slightly larger, but the new ones are a lot bigger.
@@Wrangzilla well good thing they were reviewing the Mini then.
I love these vids guys. Please do more of these classic, slightly odd, but beautiful cars!
And these reviews can be longer in my opinion, they're very good!
There is no odd Things in old Cars , they just Beautiful in all ways ,not like Todays Ugly Looking Shits with Huge grills ( like cry baby ) , Old Cars Last Long .
The only car I owned was a Mini Cooper. It was sitting in a field for a year and we’d drive by it and say ‘we should ask if it’s for sale’ and one day we did. The guy came up with keys and a can of gas, and it started first try. I loved my car. It was claret red and I still miss it.
Thomas gave me so many iconic moments today. The laugh the high note sounds like The Bee Gees and my favorite the iconic hair on Thomas James is just chilling lol 4:39 2:50 3:45
As a (modern) MINI owner, the comment about wearing a MINI like you wear a pair of shoes is spot on.
It’s a car that reflects your personality
I think every car reflects its owner's personality
@@HanYou2 100% agree!
@@HanYou2 Agreed, but not to the same extent. For example a Honda Accord could be driven by almost anyone.
I have fond memories of living with a ‘98 Rover Mini, which was also a Japanese import and came with the rare option of factory A/C. It’s all true - the bouncy ride, darty-go kart handling and incredibly vague shifter. One big difference is that the one in the video has the Sportspack option with the 3.5 inch fender flares, which explains the surprisingly terrible turning circle. As stock they came with 1.75 inch wide flares.
Our Mini actually belonged to a family friend who was too busy to oversee its restoration, so they handed it off to us to look after it. It had sat for a few years half exposed to the elements and it did what all Minis do with alarming propensity - rust. We became good friends with the shop that restored it, so much so that we let them store a few Minis at our place while they were moving stuff around. One of the coolest things they left with us for a few months was a hyper-rare Cherry Red Lamm Mini Cabriolet, which was one of 75 and was the prototype for the official Rover Mini Cabriolet.
The gear shift isn't vague, or shouldn't be. It just doesn't need bias springs, having 4 gears there's none in the middle to miss.
Old Minis are absolutely fantastic, would love to own one someday (even a non-Cooper).
An original Mini with center air vents?! Luxury!
I owed the same SPI air bag car. Man you never know until you have driven one. One of the best drivers car in the world.
Yaaay a new throttle house!
I have a 1962 mini with only the 34hp 0.8L engine and it's still a load of fun! great little cars
Old German Mini Joke " what is that for a endless Wall we drive by ? " " it's not a Wall , it's the Sidewalk !" 😎😎
That 1.3 Rover motor sounds like it has some grunt! But this is the OG Mini, so I'm not surprised. One of my favorite cars growing up...
Totally agree, this car is FUN!
Love it, thanks lads. They are safer than you think. I flipped a 78 (Bronze) Clubman in the late 80's, on a single track (typical) Welsh country road. Killed the passenger front end and wing and crushed in the roof writing off my baby, but walked away without a scratch.
Hope to see a K swapped version on a track, dragging against something it shouldn't.
cheers!
Good that I read a bit further :D. I read "killed the passenger" at first :D
Sorry to hear about your clubman. Flipped mine as well…last year:( was a daily
NO to K swap; it kills the Minis character. Hot up the old A series like in the good old days !!
@@lknowledge same
@@arkhsm agreed
An old mate of mine had an old Mini 1275 once, and after driving it some time he came to the conclusion he didn't like the bumpy and 'Old Skool' handling, so, he ripped out the suspension, manufactured a fully independent rear suspension, and Motorcycle rear spring/shocks all around, fitted some Minilite wheels... God damn, THAT transformed it no end, and the way it hustled through the country lanes was epic! 👍 😎🇬🇧
"It's not not quick" 🤣 brilliant.
5:15 Those "big rubber bumpers" are the most innovative & technically sophisticated suspension springs you'll find on any car.
You guys should collab with Mighty Car Mods. Moog has a B swapped mini, and has a lot of historical knowledge on the minis.
As an NC Miata captain, I'm offended James!
Friend of mine owned several original Minis in the nineties so I got to enjoy them in the best way I.e driving them when I was just driving for the sake of driving and then driving my own (relatively comfortable Ford Fiesta) at all other times. 1275 Clubman with a induction kit and sports exhaust was the most fun way to permanently damage both your spine and your hearing!
Moog’s B swapped Mini from mighty car mods comes to mind when you guys mentioned crazy swap minis
I just realized this is the first episode in a month on this channel
Lot more coming, we've just been travelling
@@jamesengelsman9369 great to hear!😁 ❤
Without the explanation at the beginning I didnt even notice its the extra channel
@@jamesengelsman9369 oh I can't wait, I appreciate the reply thank you I wasn't expecting it😃
@@allardbuurman8974 the explanation from Thomas is absolutely mandatory to avoid confusion 😄
THE NEW TOP GEAR…..CANADIAN EH
Everyone who loves this mini and what's to see it being turned into a modern and beautiful car.... Search Project Binkie. It is an engineering Beauty 😂🔥
And they think $40k CDN is a lot... Binkie must be many times that by now.
Yes, I'm sure Blinky will be finished any day now...
I have been looking for a classic Mini for a while. Thanks for adding to the hype. I probably won't find one anytime soon after this video is out. :)
And it’s the same feeling you get driving a Kei class car. The Honda Beat mid
engine with its 9,500 redline I owned was just fun. Put a smile on your face at half the speed of my M3 or 911
Roll-up windows and Hydrolastic suspension!! Hell, that was a modern, luxury one :-). My first car was an Austin Mini back in the sixties, in Dorval, Quebec. It had door windows that slid sideways in tracks, exterior door hinges, a centre oval gauge cluster, 10-inch wheels and a push-button starter switch on the floor. We had great fun, as teenagers, modifying those to be really fast!
I have a converted 85 mini mayfair (dropped a bigger engine in it, redone the interior) and it's still the only motor I get out of with a big smile on my face.
The 1996-1999 wide arch mini cooper S is by far the most attractive that were made over the 40 year run.
It's time for a new channel: Little throttle house. Terms and conditions: any car where you can accidentally cup the passengers knee while reaching for 5th. Or 1st in this case.
Love from India🇮🇳
I had a 96 Mini restored to my spec last winter by a guy in Toronto. Been driving the crap out if it since I picked it up in may and absolutely love it. Did a retro style to it. Mk 1 cooper s badges and a mk 1 dash. If you ever want to do a run hit me up!
"To be fair" Wayne from Letterkenny.
I don't understand what Extra Throttle House is. What happened to the explanation at the beginning of the videos?
This is the extra channel, not the main channel. Extra channel is a one take, more casual reviews. The fact that I can recite that by heart means most people get that now and no need to say it every time...
Years ago I had an Opel Kadett that felt something like that, but RWD. Also got to drive a Hillman Minx w/ 4-speed column shift that was a hoot.
If you want to see the most absolute masterful restomods of a Mini Cooper look up David Brown Automotive! The things he makes are worthy of wet dreams! Always stamps of owning one of these! Wonderful fun review! 👍🏻❤️
Clutches in these are great as they pop up quick so canngo through gears quite quick. Going round tight bends theirs hardly any lean so you csn plant your foot sooner out of them.
Mini parked next to a Chevy Suburban, it would be like a X-Wing next to a Super Star Destroyer
Parked daily a few years ago next to one with my Crew F150. The modern mini ended at my cab. I still had the bed to go! Lol
I have a picture of at least 2 mini's next to either an SUV or a Pickup Truck, you could literally fit the mini in the bed of the pickup
Awesome! Please oh please do a Weissman video one day..... if you can get your hands on one...
One of my all-time dream cars! It's just a b18c5 (or any Honda VTEC) swap away from nirvana!
EPIC video guys - love this. MORE PLZZZZZ
I've only ever just sat in one and found it quite an interesting driving position where the controls like the wheel are angled towards the centre of the car. Felt like a go kart for sure. It would be cool for TH to do a collab with Stevestonmotorco who are in BC and do some cool things with minis.
what a great little car! 600kg...that's amazing.
I love how the biggest engine available was a 1,275cc; probably moves just fine with that power, but it's easy to see why B-swapping or K-swapping is so tempting.
A tweaked n supercharged old A series is far more in character !!
Or turbocharged. It's 700kg BTW.
For sure, almost anybody'll fit. A friend of my dad is 2meters+ he had one of those, a classic and an oldschool van-mini. Those things were rockets, very nice.
My uncle who was the tallest in the family at 6'2" always had mini vans (late 70's - early 80's).
He said it was the only car he could drive in comfort.
Looking forward to the UK episodes.
That is a car I so want to own, drive, and cherish forever..
"Correct hand drive"
Damn straight
Long live the queen.
Enjoy your time in England! Would love to see you two doing some type of Grand Tour while you’re there!
Maybe convince Chris Harris to be your 3rd presenter \_O_/
Actually I would say that the real Mini has more usable interior space than the not mini modern Mini. You can put two people in the back seat of a real Mini but only double leg amputees in the back seat of a modern mini.
having owned and driven one for over a year, I can say that this is one of the best cars to drive in any scenario. and I really regret selling mine. For those who are looking for one, I suggest getting a MK6 or MK5 one, cause the MK7 you see in the video is heavier and tends to rust more easily
C'mon just buy two of them
They're so nimble! They pack a lot of power for how light they are, so they can live very comfortably on the big American highways, despite being designed for the UK market.
Havent reached the end but I came for that ending
My 76 is the love of my life.
The assertion that the term Union Jack properly refers only to naval usage was dismissed by the Flag Institute in 2013 following historical investigations
Great episode.
Always had a fondness for the mini coopers.
My first car was a 1974 Leyland Mini, with the square nose. My brother chucked a 1.5 from an Allegro in it before I bought it from him. Stank of petrol.
When I realized where you guys are (on the same street where I work each day), I realized how starstruck I'd be to meet you guys in public.
Fun car, I own a VWPolo 3f, 31 years old, and enjoy it way more than my 325d F10 daily driver. 75cv>218cv
I wonder if Thomas and James would enjoy my 1991 Geo Metro Convertible?
So happy you still have your NC Miata. James, it may be fat, but it has four cupholders. FOUR!
Fun fact, David Stirling and founder of the SAS, was over 6ft tall and he drove a mini around London in the 60s.
I’m 6’5 and comfortable in a mini
Nice thing, thank you! How cool it would be, if you make a video with Binky from Bad Obsession Motorsport.
I have both a ND1 and a F56 and everyday is a party😎✌️
It's also called in the circle, the REAL Mini.
Loved the NC Miata joke!
Please buy contrasting minis.. Even better if James's mini is right hand drive!
Just make a series building them.. PLEASE
There used to be a guy in Ontario that did import restoration mini's for like 20k like 10-15 years ago but his website is gone now so I guess he stopped. I do also remember finding a place in Ontario that just had all original parts for sale, even full chassis"
Love the car! But something weird, why do you have to stop at some of those straights? And at the last bit, 10:28 , a car stopped for you turning. That’s so weird coming from Asia 😅
Those latter minis are not the same to drive. The bigger 13" wheels, sound proofing, full interior trim (heavy) puts the weight up considerably. Never had an original 60's cooper S, but as an apprentice built dozens of 1275cc conversions, many with a 75.5mm bore giving 1380cc. 75hp was the norm 90hp was about the most for road going, 136hp was the highest we ever managed with 1440cc using a 83mm? crank. Top speed was a genuine 125mph 0-60 about 7 sec.
Fun while it lasted, which wasn't very long🙂
What's crazy is that in my teenage years EVERYBODY had a Mini at some point because you pick them for under £500. Now you hardly see them about..... I guess because like mine, teenage boys crashed them.
I loved the original Mini.
Nice to know it still delivers a great driving experience, even by today's standards.
But don't modify it, there are so few originals left!!!
How does a Mini Cooper compare to a 1999’s Acura Integra Type R?
You guys should check out the Mini Remastered by David Brown - Silverstone UK. They're rebuilding the original mini with modern interiors and safety features.
Savage bit of kit … lads put monster engines in them … make a savage sleeper !
Damn it would be rad to put the new 3cylinder gr Corolla motor in a mini. I doubt it would fit but maybe with some alterations… 🤷♂️
Sounds like project Binky!
How come i never knew about this extra channel
Yoo guys, love your episodes, please review the R8 V8!
Cool video! Love the short form content, could watch you guys for hours just talking about cars and driving. When are we getting a CT-4V Blackwing manual track video?!? Would love to see how you guys feel about it, just do it on ETH so there are fewer eyes on it ;)
You guys should make a video compilation of your sound engineer getting into all the cars you test.
James’s outfit is quite revealing😜
If you want a more modern mini get an r53, you'll be happy you did
😊 definitely the rawest feel at of the modern mini
When you come to the uk it would be great to meet you both 😁
Id love to see a build off between you with minis. Top gear style challenges and a road trip
TH-cam's 'Mighty Car Mods' did a Honda VTEC engine swapped classic mini some time a go... Have a search for it, it's crazy what that thing turned into! 🤔😏😉👍 😎🇬🇧
clicking like before i ev en start this one!
You should review Bad Obsession's project Binky....in about 15 years when it's done.
I’d love to see these two guys playing Mini Golf with Mr. Bean! 👍😁
I absolutely adore this video. I love my Mini’s! I could see having like 3-4 of them because it’s like shoes (as mentioned) different pairs for different situations. Hahaa
As an owner of a widebody 2012 Cooper S, I can say I’d easily pretty this 1.
Coming to England. Sweet. Let the guessing game commence. My money's on Hot Hatches. So new ST's, Yaris, older Clio. But I fear it'll be an EV 500
