My favorite thing about old cars is the driving experience: you get the raw feeling of the car. Now, I don't mind power steering, but there are some cars nowadays that just feel completely dead when driving it. I've driven a 2011 Subaru Impreza, and something about the steering rubs me the wrong way.
The thing I miss the most is visibility, newer cars have larger and more intrusive a-pillars every year, and the windows on the sides get smaller and smaller, gone are the days of maximum visibility, now it's all about safety and lower and lower visibility.
Just look at driver and passenger side widows, most cars now have the sill at shoulder level

Holy crap this just made me realise how accurate they got the sound is for Takumi's AE86.
Drift King helped during the creation of Initial D, it may help.
all of the car audio in initial D are from the cars real life counterparts, so all of the sounds from takumis 86 they got from an actual 86, and that goes for every car in the show. the amount of detail in inital d is wicked

With all these things considered, you can go as far to say that the disclaimer at the start of the show (the whole "everything in this show is fictional" thing) is bullshit. The only things that are actually fictional are the story, the characters and some location names. Everything else is real and 100% accurate.
Well, except for the sound of Takumi's AE86 after the engine gets replaced. It's still real, but not 100% accurate as the sound of the engine at 11,000 RPM in the show is actually Keiichi Tsuchiya's Trueno at 9,000 RPM.

I'd start with a nice E12 (and this time all the security meaures possible). Sure, it's not a "fun" car, but once you've driven one you'll understand. I'd also like a Mazda 323 200i (FE3-powered BF hatch). And an E21 323i BAUR.

yeah lol. I wouldn't buy a supercar. I'd buy an mx5 mk1, rx 7 rotary version, toyota supra, ae86, nisan skyline r32 and r34. that is all I can think of right now but more may get to my mind :D
When Yamaha and Toyota come together to build an engine, you'll always have a gorgeous soundtrack. That's also why the Lexus LFA sounds so great too. The 4AGE on the AE86 is what makes it a classic.

If toyota just made the new carolla's RWD then they could be possibly having an almost legendary car like the AE86. Shame that car companies keep making 90% FWD.
the problem with new car isn't just that they're front wheel drive. they're too big too heavy too ugly. they have way too many stupid features on them, they are too complicated.
and as sad as it may be, I don't think a car like the ae86 would sell very good today. it would feel too unrefined, everything rattling, no sound insulation...
of course there are ways to correct those "flaws" but then you will end up with a car that's heavy and that will isolate you from the road and the act of driving, it wouldn't be as pure, and that's really what makes the ae86 so great

megaspeed2v2 GT-86 is a purpose-built sportscar. And it does have all the safety and entertainment and soundproofing and all that guff and weighs 1200 kilos and has no practicality whatsoever. And it's a bit too expensive- not like in "like gold", but in "slower than new hot hatches 3/4 the price", so it won't form a cult.
To the "non petrol head" this entire video probably seems like a total joke.
For example:
"When a car (shows ugly 80's car resembling a slightly folded box) sounds and looks as good as this (Pans to noisy 'boy racer' exhaust), it is all forgotten"

Dunno man, I'm by no means a petrol head or anything. I only took an slight interest in cars just over two months ago for my first lesson and before that I didn't even know what gears did! I knew next to nothing about cars and I've still got a lot to learn in this kind of field, though I'm near getting my license, but as a manga and anime fan this car is what I really want (and I've only just started watching Initial D lol).

+Car Throttle When you said about the single thing, I remembered the famous line from Initial D! "Lonely driver" indeed. Too bad not many people feel the same for the early 90's/late 80's Honda prelude. I say that because it shares a lot of similar traits despite not being rwd or having the same weight distribution as the 86. The hachi roku is an awesome machine though.

I had one of these as my first car back in 1989. Great fun to drive,expensive as hell to insure for a 20 year old. A gearbox rebuild that Toyota paid two thirds towards under the extended cover still cost me £1500. even with all the expenses. i was sad to see it go.

This is the spec as sold in the UK. No pop up headlight version was ever sold here. This particular model is the later facelifted version. If I recall, its thirty years since I had one, the car came standard with an lsd. Effectively it had the engine and running gear from the mk1 MR2. To this day I kick myself for selling it.

So I waited weeks for an AE86? Amazing!!
I drove a genuine AE86 Trueno GT Apex last week on the actual Mt. Haruna road and can honestly say it's the best car I've ever driven. It was slightly modified - had an LSD & AE101 bottom end, but no car has made me feel that 'connected'. It was unforgettable and is everything that befits the legend & more.

I don't know how Japanese pronounce it, but Chinese people pronounce 86 as 八六 ("ba liu", equivalent to "EIGHT-SIX") instead of 八十六 ("ba shi liu", equivalent to "EIGHTY-SIX"). So, somehow I agree with you

Both sides of my family have owned many AE86's and an uncle of mine still has a black 1984 Toyota Corolla GT-S 16V Twin-Cam 5 speed manual since he was 19! And he's in his 40's now and still has it in his garage.

With sidepipes, flamethrowers, turbine wheels & T.A. radials, westcoaster truck mirrors, C.B. radio & fire-stick antennas, Disco Ball, Hot Chick airbrushed on the hood, Mountain murals on the sides, Marantz cassette deck, it is the very, very best of 1978 Man!

One of my favorites of all time I love Honda and rwd but they have never made a good rwd for drifting. I feel the ae86 being a high(somewhat) revving na motor and rwd is like exactly what I wish Honda would make. Love the s2000 but it doesn’t like to drift at all.

every car meet there was loads of them and they was all in good condition. I counted 12 at Daikafuto. and loads at Okayama circuit...plus a few at Nakayama.
