    Nobody who owns a tofu car replica that's this painstakingly detailed will ever be as fast as the autistic teenager from the cartoon. The whole premise of the first season of Initial D is that this kid in his dad's 15 year old shitbox Corolla is not taken seriously by anybody but is a savant and keeps winning street races anyway. Whoever wins this will be too scared of damaging their fifty thousand dollar cosplay to drive it on backroads. Meanwhile Takumi Fujiwara is spiritually a Nissan Altima driver and does not care.

    • @lemytrenet
      @lemytrenet ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Don't forget. The tofu car in the anime was tuned for racing and the kid was driving since 12 years old because his dad was a really bad parent and even forced his kid to optimize and drive faster. Even the protagonist blowed the engine when racing a better car mid season and his dad gave him a racing engine and tuned transmission because of course. The show was fun and the show that introduced many into car culture. But damn if you watch it again you realize that dad was insane forcing his kid to drive since he was 12 and forcing him to ignore driving laws to make better times and giving him the tools to drive like crazy

      Cars don't win races, drivers do....

  • @kiefershanks4172
    @kiefershanks4172 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    I think this car's real claim to fame is it has all the makings of the classic underdog. Initial D is popular for many reasons but one reason is how it conveyed a message to car enthusiasts that no matter what they drive, their car is only as fast and competent as they are as drivers. It's not what you drive, it's how you drive it. That's the spirit of racing. The human element is the most important part that can make even a slow Corolla beat GTRs, EVOs, and RX-7s. There's something that will always be beautiful about that kind of story because it dares to suggest that money can't buy happiness, skill, or respect. Those thing must be earned and it can be done behind the wheel of something as seemingly uninteresting as a Corolla.

      Hell, remember when Takumi drove Itsuki's 85 single cam and whooped on those meatheads in the Silvias? And they were like, "Hey that's an 86! Liar!" But then he took the corner and the car nearly flipped from all the body roll. "Wait, we just got smoked by an 85."

    I had the pleasure of owning an 85 SR5. My favorite interaction was breaking down and rolling the car into a Lexus dealership. I walked in to let them know I was getting a tow and one of the sales team approached me. He said he had to come out and see the car. He had taught rally driving in them back in Australia when he was younger. It was a really cool car to own, not just because of the of the car itself, but also the connection people had to the car that I met over my time with it. I own a Miata today and while I love getting the waves from fellow owners, I haven't had such an organic experience with a car like I had with the SR5. It was magic.

      If my memory serves me right he was guided by his father with all the delivery routes he had to do, but when he went racing he would learn from each racer and evolve his style. Kinda wild that it sold for 40k when it's an SR5 conversion. That's not a GT-S if it's an 84, they only made GT-S lift-backs from 85-86. It also has a "kouki" USDM front grille and bumper. That's not a "zenki" bumper, which the car have if it's an 84. Those back seats aren't GT-S seats either, and the interior panels aren't. They swapped the axle because it has disks in the rear which means it ditched the 6.4" rear for the proper disk brake 6.7" unit from a GT-S. Still crazy that a non-original car would sell for that amount, even for a give-away vehicle. He got ripped off it they paid that much and it's not a show-car, yikes.

    In 2001, my AE92 GT-S got totalled by an idiot running a red light. With the insurance check, I bough a 1987 Corolla GT-S, right at the beginning of the initial D and drift craze. It was a cheap tomato red repaint, lowered 2 inches, MK2 Supra wheels, and a 45 degrees rear side exit twin tip, HKS-style exhaust. Paid 2300 CAD$ back then. Was it fun? Yes. Was it the greatest car I ever had? No. Of all the 80's and 90's cars I had as a younglin', including NA and Turbo cars, my favorite remains my 1989 Suzuki Swift GTi.

    So I entered the contest and bought a mug, but my intentions are not to keep the Corolla GT-S in its carsplay paint scheme... Mr Regular, I don't know if you'll read this but let me at least say my piece.
    So I started getting into cars after Initial D. Yes, I was one of those kids. But truth be told, I think that was innate to me. I was a kid that grew up collecting Hot Wheels, Tokyo Drift was always my favorite, and Need For Speed was a big part of my gaming diet. Initial D was just the trigger to get me to regret not insisting to my parents that I wanted to take auto shop rather than take a college prep course. By that point I was stuck in Texas taking orders in McDonald's. After that I chose to quit my job and work at Domino's as a pizza delivery driver, then go to Community College for their auto tech program. Unfortunately I had to drop out and switch jobs since pizza drivers don't get medical, that and COVID made it hard to justify to my parents. Now I work at a car parts shop, earning only slightly less than I used to. But it did give me time to work on a little project of mine.
    During that time I was working on a book. It started with one simple question: What if Initial D was set in America? At first it was just an exercise in plagiarism, literally writing the dialogue of the Initial D manga and swapping the names. But then I started altering it, changing the dialogue and altering the events to fit with a more modern setting. Rather than Japanese gangs racing each other for cred, it's amateur racing clubs with social media accounts racing for clout. Instead of delivering tofu, the Corolla delivers pizza. Instead of taking place in 1990s Gunma prefecture, it's in post-COVID West Virginia. Characters were subtracted, added altered, working on different tropes, archetypes and story structures. I gave it to an editor for review and while they did like it, they made some suggestions that finally changed the plot and made me realized 1) I had altered the story so much that it's a new one entirely. I had taken inspiration not just from Initial D but from Harry Potter, Scott Pilgrim, Fast and Furious, Karate Kid, and even my own life experience. When I wrote this, I was listening to punk rock, not eurobeat. And 2) some people haven't yet seen or read Initial D. Part of it is because it's a story about a niche topic, drift racing, told through a niche medium, manga and anime.
    I intend to turn this into a book, a medium dominated by YA dystopian fantasy. Part of it is because a lot of people showed interest in the project. I guess selling something as "Initial D but American" tickled people's brains. Maybe it's just nostalgia banking. But it's also partially because I think it would be interesting to someone like me, or anyone else reading this comment. As mentioned before, modern literature is pretty much swamped with YA dystopia, where it's about a girl fighting a laughably evil regime while having to negotiate a love triangle. I just think it's time for a change, Maybe get a new generation interested in racing. And let me be clear, I don't intent to rob Shuichi Shigeno of his story. Much like The Magnificent Seven is just Seven Samurai repackaged for a different audience, so too is this book. But at least it recognizes the original inspiration. There's a Japanese shop teacher in the book that used to race in Japan during the 90s, before working for Nismo and later immigrating to the US after marrying. He thinks it'll be a decent job to save up money for retirement, only to meet this teenager who gives him the case of Deja Vu. He's suddenly reminded of the legend of the Ghost of Akina. The teenage tofu delivery driver riding an AE86. But here is a redneck teenager, working at his uncle's pizza restaurant, who honed his skills during the Pandemic. The Hero of Moonshine Pass, driving an old Corolla GT-S. And now he has the chance to become his mentor.
    Anyways, if I win, I'll wrap that puppy in a new design, put louvers on the rear windshield and use it to promote the book. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

    I had this year Corolla GT-S back in the 90's. It was more fun than a regular Corolla, and it was kind of quick, but it was a really basic car that DESPERATELY needed a 6th gear. God it was awful on the highway... Anyway, I sold it after it got broken into 2 times in a year. Apparently Toyota door locks from that era were super fragile and I'd had enough. Sold it for a late 80's Civic Si hatchback that was infinitely more fun.
