Ring Alarm + Amazon Alexa Tips & Tricks - Integrating Your Ring Alarm with Echo Devices

  • Today, I'm going to tell you some tips and tricks that you can use when you have a Ring Alarm and you have integrated it with Amazon Alexa / Echo devices. With Alexa set up, you will be able to arm or disarm (needs 4 digit passcode) your Ring Alarm by voice.
    You can also set up Alexa Guard which is a feature of all echo devices where they will listen for Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms and also glass breakage. If they hear one of those triggers, you will get an alert on your phone so that you can verify and you can then send an alert to Ring so that they can dispatch help if needed.
    Alexa Guard also has a Away Lighting feature in which if Alexa Guard is armed, it can turn ON or OFF your specified smart lights at random times making it look like somebody is home.
    Another thing that you can do is set up routines in Alexa and you can have her announce which sensor or door or window has been opened so that you will have a verbal confirmation which sensor was triggered through your echo devices.
    Ring's versatility of their sensors which you can install them to monitor not just your house but your other properties like the backyard shed in my case and our vehicles and get Alexa to announce when those sensors are triggered.

    This is the reason why I have been part of the echo and Amazon echo system from the beginning. Now IMO they are ahead of the smart home game and device integration because Amazon could see where it was headed. And videos like yours help the people that may not be savvy enough to understand the potential better understand it!

      I was stubborn and was trying this with Google/Homeseer. Ive made the switch to echo within the last few months and plan to get ring on black Friday! My automation wants are simple: not wifi and voice controlled. next year ring cameras to seal the deal. Cant beat the value. Amazon is killing it.

    This particular episode was so very helpful to me, as I was one of those people complaining about not having voice announcements for the ring security sensors, I have written to so many people, including Ring, with no help. Now A lot of people said use the Alexa, but I could not get precise instructions on how to do that, well you have, and I thank you, I still wish the ring system it self would do voice announcements, but I got it to work with Alexa, thanks to you, and I kinda like it. I have been following you since I found you, and enjoy your episodes.

    I have been doing that for a while now. ever since ring updated their skill with Alexa that included the sensors that the alarms use. I’ve also done one better and have strategically mounted echo dots outside my house in my porch light fixture and in my driveway and when the ring cameras detect movement at certain early hours of the morning it will tell whatever is triggered the movement to stay away from my vehicles the cameras recording. Or to stay away from my house to the cameras recording. It also tells solicitors to stay away.

Not sure if this was mentioned in previous comments but you can set up identical reminders (Example: Front door announcement - assigned to Kitchen Echo, Front door announcement 2 - assigned to Master Bedroom Echo, etc) for other Alexa devices in the case you want the announcements to happen in multiple rooms. • @bf5633

    Two problems with routines & announcements. Limited to one device, so if your not near that device you might not hear the announcement. Routines do not have their own volume setting. Announcements use current device volume set, so could be quiet or ear popping.

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You can use "messaging" option instead of alexa says... and you can select any or all of your echo devices... As to volume setting.. you can also just assign 1 device.. like an echo dot for just announcements.. place it in the middle of the house and with full volume on...

    Very useful vid - some great ideas! Now, what I’d *really* like is when a Ring Alarm sensor is triggered, a camera looking at the sensor (which sort I wonder?) would display the alarmed area on an Echo Show that I can see from my bed. (Ideally it would be dark screen until the cam feed pops up). Even better would be showing that on another Echo show as well!

    Excellent review of integrating Ring and Alexa with routines. I just got ring at home and using routines to turn on lights in the back yard when any doors in the front are opened or people detection via cameras is triggered. I plan to get a simple wifi battery alarm to use instead of my Ring flood lights. Lots of flexibility. Also, I thought I saw some Wyze devices in your Alexa routines and I'm interested to know if you have to use a Wyze bridge to alexa device for these inexpensive sensors to work. That would make a good TH-cam review. Thanks.

      You can schedule to arm, but to disarm it needs a code, so can't do it by routine. I have setup a "good night" routine that turns off my lights, locks the front door, and arms the ring to "Arm Stay". I have a keypad next to my bed so that when I wake up I can disarm the system by entering the code. You can disarm by voice by asking Alexa to turn off the alarm (disarm) but it will ask you for the code. NOTE: You'll need to enable the voice feature in the Ring app.

    Nice tip and tricks. I have recently purchased Ring alarm home security kit. What App you are referencing to connect to my echo show 5

      I haven't tried different brand of sirens yet. I still have the now discontinued Ring outdoor siren and I'm hoping they will release a new version soon.

    This is a great instructional video, however it seems that directing people to use "Alexa Says" instead of "Messaging" right from the beginning is setting them up for a headache in the future... needed to redo all their announcements if wanting to send those to multiple devices.
    Why not just go with "Messaging" for any and all announcements right from the start, even if they only have one device (ie: Echo Show) at the moment?

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thinking on this one is that not everybody which includes me wanting all their echo devices to chime..trust me...it is annoying when all your devices announce it and it is not at the same time..one can dedicate just one device to do the announcements...but messaging is an option if you want.

    Ring is coming out with a car alarm system next year. If triggered will record video inside and outside of car.

    Hi, I wanted to know if it was possible for you to connect a shelly that supplies power to a siren only when the alarm is armed and there is an actual intrusion of someone into the house

    I just got my Alexas and the RING alarm system, do you know if the PIR sensor on the keypad can trigger an alam if it detects movement? I’ve always wondered if the tiny motion sensor on the keypad can trigger an alarm. Edit: is it possible to arm the glass and smoke alarm detection on stay mode? Just imagine you’re home and in the middle of the night someone breaks glass in, why wouldn’t ring protect you then?

    Great videos, thank you. Had one issue, I wanted the voice announcements when a door is opened so this was great BUT for some reason my Echo Show 5 was not speaking when I did "Alexa says", it was working on my Echo but not Echo Show 5 so instead I set up the routine as an announcement and it works, I just get the announcement chime before it speaks. You know why the Alexa Says is not playing on the Show 5 but works on the Echo and my phone?

    How might you go about setting up devices to trigger just from an action without having to ask anything so it works away from an APP? Example home alarm set away triggers smart plug on, disarmed turns the plug off?

    Excellent youtube video dude!! Very informative. Question, is it possible to have Alex-a turn on a smart plug/outlet when the ring alarm system is triggered (like a break-in)? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    I'll have to guess you're using the Wyze Sense motion sensor and Wyze Bulb smartbulb.
