The issue with the 1300 is that the cardan shaft is now a serviceable item and is required to be replaced. With the 1250s it was a lifetime part, though subsequently was found not to be and ultimately did require replacement (BMW recommends being replaced at 60k kms) BUT because the cardan on the 1250 was a "lifetime" part, BMW covered the cost of replacement. That's not the case with the 1300, with the cardan replacement being added to the service schedule for replacement at 80k km, and the cost being transferred to you the consumer. With the 80k km service being a costly major service, and now with the addition of the cardan replacement, you will likely be looking at a service cost of 5-10% of the purchase price of the bike which is ridiculous! It mightn't be a turn off to people who hardly ride their bike, but those of us that do daily rides, 80k km will only be two - three years of ownership.

I currently ride a 1250 GS and when the time comes I hope to pick up a 1250 GSA. Zero interest in the 1300. BMW has built a GS that no GS rider asked for. If the height and weight put you off buying a GS before, then this bike is for you. If it didn't and you want the upgrade in tech buy a KTM SuperAdv 1290. Me!! I'll be doing my best to secure the last of the 1250 GSA.
From the day I stared riding in 1974 - dual/dirt bikes were nice and high and we lived without electronic suspension and ride height adjustments. With all the electronics and gimmicks it just makes make these bikes extremely expensive and vulnerable to breaking, even on small spills. Give me a good, old school XT350 or XR400, KLR or DR for dirt and "adventure". Simple, easy to repair and goes forever on a shoestring budget. I own a2012, R1200GS as well but it is only used for tar roads. I might be old and stupid but I have 50 years' riding under my belt and I stil think these bikes are mostly gimmicks and un-needed electronics. The price is stupid! Tubless spoke rims are great. That should be on ALL bikes big and small ! The fancy - tablet dashboards are the "now" but how I miss the old analogue dials, especially a revcounter !
A great comparison for these great bikes! But I think at 8:56 you weren’t fair since the suspension of r1300 was at low mode!! I hope next video to dig deeply on the size of these two bike in a different situation
I'm an ex GS owner and only 5'8" with a short leg length, I moved to the R1250R because I was fed up of the tall seat of the GS and that it was hard for me to be confident in all situations. This new lowering suspension may well swing me back to the new 1300 as it very much like it addresses this issue and I do prefer overall the GS to the R.
3 of the 4 variants , of the new 1300 gs, can be equipped with adaptive ride height. in a showroom, the while version, with low seat (there are no low suspension variants anymore) is only about 31 inches, and easily almost flat foot-able . One can also get the regular seat- and would also be comfortable with one flat and other on the balls of the feet.
@@michaelmcnulty4993 each dealer will have their existing 2023 or older gs versions (low or not). there certainly won't be any new 2024 gs versions, but there is still a 2024 gsa version available. there likely won't be any 2025 1250 gsa available, as the 1400 is generally expected by october this year/
Beginning of October I watched a video on the 1300. I have been dreaming of a GS for a number of years. By the 12th October I purchased my dream bike, 2023 R 1250 GS. Could not possibly be any happier. Did not love the look of the 1300. The 1300 is obviously a better bike, just not for me.
12kg lighter... bike plus rider plus passenger plus luggage = 425kg+ ... not sure it makes much difference. I also think the 1250 has so much more character in the looks dept... real unique road presence. 1300 just looks bland 😢
I am a purist and love having the basics. It's great to have all the new features but I feel that is for those who don't really ride off road. If you did or have road off road you want durability, as well as easy to replace parts when you break something which does happen on a true adventure rider not a weekend warrior. I think BMW is looseing touch with their real owners. The 1300 is a beautiful road bike though and does set the bar for that buttttt is that what this new bike was built for.?
The new 1300GS appears rather diminutive sat against the 1250 , as for the looks , the 1250 is far better looking bike whereas the new 1300 looks like it has been hit very hard with the fugly stick.
I walked into my local dealership ready to sign on the dotted line but sadly it wasn’t ❤ at first sight so the 1250 will be around a little longer than anticipated. Not sure I need adaptive cruise control especially as I don’t use cc on my present GS.
I hardly use cc as I keep off motorways if possible. The adaptive cc doesn't like roundabouts; on my test ride it lost the lock on the vehicle in front and nearly chucked me off! If you don't want it, fine, but the ugly sensors will still be there.
Going on about 12 kg like it’s a massive change. It’s hardly noticeable unless you’re too small to ride it. 12 kg is nothing when it’s still over 220 kg
At the wrong side of 20k for the 1300 I've changed from a lowered 1250GS TE to a 1250RS SE which is significantly cheaper. It doesn't have the lowering suspension (now £500 as opposed to £140 on thev1300) nor stuff like the active cruise or blind spot but I can live with that. I did see somewhere that the ride height reduction takes some time to work and doesn't reach it's lower position in time if you need to do an emergency stop which for me could be a big concern.
And still, nobody yet has put both bikes similarly equipped in a scale to see the 17k difference! The only upgrade I want is the adaptive headlights since I live in the mountains and my 2018 doesn't have it.besides that, perfect!
New GS is better looking than old version, but lets be honest the GS has never been anywhere near the best looking adventure bike anyway so don't know why there is so much fuss about the new looks? I'm not surprised they have many of both in stock as with Ducati they are far to expensive. For me Triumph are still the best overall brand in all styles, fit and finish is far better than the over priced Ducati's and on par with BMW. It's down to brand loyalty and personal taste at the end of the day luckily for us bikers no bikes are bad well may only HD and the Chinese brand Italian crap that's coming out the wood work everywhere now. You can polish a turd but it is still a turd.
Interesting review I've gone in the opposite direction 2018 R1200GS TE Rallye to a 2004 R1150GSA For the simple ease of use to fix which paid dividends imminently with parts failures where I was able to fix it myself sorting major issues for 3k in parts an now I've got a reliable bike I was able to rebuild the FD for £300 or so in parts 1200 on its a 1500 purchase as a complete unit as they class that as a consumable item now and wont sell the bearings. That's one thing no one ever talks about on these things is how much is the Radar to fix? How much is the Dynamic ESA with ride height to fix once it goes wrong these?? I experienced major failiures on a 2014 GSA Under the extended warranty, 2 engines, FD, the first day I had it the display failed, ESA Failures, ECU an other parts and issues. So I've experienced the good an bad of GS ownership. Parts costs are the things you never see mentioned like the Himalayan Parts failures I an many others experienced like the front brake light switch and seized swingarm and people waiting months and months under warranty for parts luckily I managed to reject mine. The other thing is those 1300's are nearly 28k fully specc'd an the looks are a real shame. What I'd like to see bmw do is a back to basics 500 boxer where you can buy the manual and service tools as they wont sell you them on these. For me the headlight shape on the GS was a real unique thing and made it stand out in a raft of bikes that all look very similar.
I prefer big bikes because of comfort. Non adjustable seat is no go for me. I am 1,80 m tall and having firstly 1200 GS the highest position was comfortable, but after that on 1200 GSA comfort saving for me is high position in front and low in rear. So i have seat in flat position now and seat does not pushes me toward the wide tank. I improved seating position additionally with OEM lower foot pegs, which improved riding in standing and seating position. If new 1300 GSA does not has these options, I will never consider buying it.
Good review, but if I was looking to go back to a GS from my RT then it would be the 1250 all day. I think the 1300 for is why over priced for what it is imo. Like you say though it’s a personal choice.
I never had any GS, used to ride F900XR and now I am at new S1000XR.... this is my cup of tea... but if you ask me I would rather go for 1300GS because it looks much better for me... 1250gs is very ugly in my humble opinion... but as I said I am not GS guy...
So I recently sold my 2021GS and while it was a good bike it still lacked the soul that other bikes have. I find it interesting that BMW is now just making the GS in a few formats to suit a particular riding style. From what I have read there is an off road version, on road and something in between with 600 options. Wasn't the GS created years ago as a do it all machine? now they are pretty well saying that it has a whole host of compromises depending on your riding style? That is fine because other manufacturers do the same with different variants but........There are better machines out there for each respective category. There are better sport tourers, better off road machines etc. So if you want a GS to do it all do you have to own two now? I sold my GS and bought a Ducati Pikes Peak which is a much better sport tourer with no off road ability, I also own a Desert X that imho does both on and offroad better than a GS. I guess what this brings to light is that a GS is a giant compromise. Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing machine but I think people will either gain real perspective on what a GS truly is and accept it or they will keep buying them thinking it will "do it all." I think this just proves that there is no do it all, at least with competency. If today somebody said you only get one bike to do it all I would choose the Desert X, with a caveat, a Desert X with the added Tractive suspension (which I did do), the aux gas tank and a few goodies. You end up with a machine that has no real compromises. It handles like a sport bike on road and even in stock form is excellent off road but with the new suspension it equals the KTM 890 rally (Which I also own) off road. By adding the aux tank you get the best fuel range in the industry so travel is a breeze. It also has most of the tech of the GS but it has way more soul and smile factor.
19 liter tank seems very small. That is the same as my Fz6 and that tank doesn't feel that big. I wonder if they kept it small to claim a lower weight.
Yes I think it was in the plan, all manufacturers are lowering the fuel capacity of all bikes, it seems like the easiest way of reducing each bikes weight then they can say it is more efficient. If you look at a few of the road tests they are talking about around 175 miles before it needs more fuel, but bearing in mind you can pretty well get 200 miles from a 1250 GS tank and the 1300 pushes you to use it more it is not going to be that efficient. Anyway it doesn’t add up a bigger engine capacity and a smaller tank on a touring bike ?
in a show room demo, with the engine powered off, the bike settles to its lowest position- the side stand matches that height. Its only in motion , above a certain speed (3/5 mph ?), that the motorcycle raises to its max height.
People call the new 1300 lighter and more nimble, but the thing is, the 1250 is already fantastically light and agile in the way it handles on the street. Can it really be improved by much? I'm just not sure. The 1250 already quickly, easily, and stably cranks over to 45+ degrees of lean angle at basically any speed it's capable of. I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless the process of selling your old 1250 and getting a 1300 is financially negligible for you.
Im 6'3 and the new bike is too small. The seat is nowhere near as comfortable. These are two very important reasons as well as the £8000 pounds extra i would have to pay for the same spec 1300. I dont mind the looks and other upgrades but i think they have catered for the small riders and forgotten the bigger ones so i bought an akrapovic full system for the 1250 which gives me 6hp and i think 8fp torque which makes it near the new one anyway 👍
@@specialcircs only 20% of the population are over six foot but you dont buy an adventurer/ off-road bike because its small. Its still not as comfortable and £8000 more to upgrade. I agree from a sales point of view its sensible but i dont benefit from BMW's sales strategy.
As for the design i've never looked twice at the 1250, always considered them huge cow-like old man bikes. But the 1300 however feels very different, it looks sleek and sporty, like you ll actually will be able to drive it offroad.

Worth the upgrade ? No. But that wont matter to some. I am reasonably well off and could have one but think the 1250gsa is far superior and wont be jumping ship. At 6ft 2 its perfect dimensionally too. The new bike, to me, is ridiculously ugly considering what it replaces and looks very cheap in areas. Theres been a lot of hype but many 1200/1250 owners arent inspired..... maybe the new adv bike will win us over but I have a feeling it will be more of the same.... smaller, very dodgy looks and more to sporty than a big brash adv tourer.
My Rallye '23 has a 30 litre tank, and i wont be giving that up..... 500+ km of range is just beautiful.
Low chassis 1250GS was available??
@@michaelmcnulty4993 each dealer will have their existing 2023 or older gs versions (low or not). there certainly won't be any new 2024 gs versions, but there is still a 2024 gsa version available. there likely won't be any 2025 1250 gsa available, as the 1400 is generally expected by october this year/
Beginning of October I watched a video on the 1300. I have been dreaming of a GS for a number of years. By the 12th October I purchased my dream bike, 2023 R 1250 GS. Could not possibly be any happier. Did not love the look of the 1300. The 1300 is obviously a better bike, just not for me.
hope 1400adv will better looking, but this gen is pure revolution ,special the frame is much much better
12kg lighter... bike plus rider plus passenger plus luggage = 425kg+ ... not sure it makes much difference.
I also think the 1250 has so much more character in the looks dept... real unique road presence. 1300 just looks bland 😢
It is not lighter in reality
😂
Never had an issue with the height of the GS, flat foot the bike with both feet. 6’3” tall
Appreciate the review
Keeping my 1250
I don't like the new "soft" design
Going on about 12 kg like it’s a massive change. It’s hardly noticeable unless you’re too small to ride it. 12 kg is nothing when it’s still over 220 kg
Pesano uguali, 12 kg di meno è una falsita'
All those radar features to make it safer then put the smallest brake lights on it I've ever seen. I'm sticking with the GS1250 Adventure.
I've never driven both but seriously I love the R1250GS
I prefer this "airy" mic setup. Music for my ears :-)
I'm waiting for the eventual update to the R1300RS. 😊
Thanks Motobob. Always wondered whether you work for BMW 😅
Can’t you find a cap that fits!!!!
Any reason why you use a quadlock phone holder instead of the BMW one?
The last G/S I wrode was the G/S 80. So I think either one are going to be an upgrade.
greate review @motobob btw cool jacket .. where can i get one .. :D
Everything's good except the looks in my cup of tea, now I'm just waiting for the new R12 ninet urban gs or something.
Your videos are a source of inspiration! How wonderful to see such a passionate approach to creating content.🔥🔥🔥 5 💥
Excellent video as usual.
I think you mentioned it in a video before but I can't find it. What jacket are you wearing?
How’s the cost factor though, doesn’t the 1250 come with crash bars and a bunch of other stuff the 1300 doesnt? That’s probably why the weight dropped
What best adventure bike
Bmw gsa 1250
Ktm 1290 adventure s
Honda africa twin adventure s 1100 dct
Ducati multistrada v4 rs
What best performance?
Quick shifter seems a bit jerky, see 5.20, Would have been nice to see you sat on both for a comparison.
Finally GS looks good again. Looks like a motorcycle and not with half of the mc on top of the front wheel.
Bro what ur adventure personal bike
Thanks for the video! I wonder how the auto-height adjustment works with the sidestand length. Could you comment on that, please?
in a show room demo, with the engine powered off, the bike settles to its lowest position- the side stand matches that height. Its only in motion , above a certain speed (3/5 mph ?), that the motorcycle raises to its max height.
@@bikramjitganguly Thank you!
Seeing them side by side cements how much better looking the older version is. Or if not better, then more characterful. The new one is bland.
Dear Motobob i liked your video and i liked Black colour BMW GS
People call the new 1300 lighter and more nimble, but the thing is, the 1250 is already fantastically light and agile in the way it handles on the street. Can it really be improved by much? I'm just not sure. The 1250 already quickly, easily, and stably cranks over to 45+ degrees of lean angle at basically any speed it's capable of. I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless the process of selling your old 1250 and getting a 1300 is financially negligible for you.
Great add for new bmw 1300 😜
Im 6'3 and the new bike is too small. The seat is nowhere near as comfortable. These are two very important reasons as well as the £8000 pounds extra i would have to pay for the same spec 1300. I dont mind the looks and other upgrades but i think they have catered for the small riders and forgotten the bigger ones so i bought an akrapovic full system for the 1250 which gives me 6hp and i think 8fp torque which makes it near the new one anyway 👍
Statistics. Most riders are not 6'3", they're (sensibly) catering to the majority of the market
@@specialcircs only 20% of the population are over six foot but you dont buy an adventurer/ off-road bike because its small. Its still not as comfortable and £8000 more to upgrade. I agree from a sales point of view its sensible but i dont benefit from BMW's sales strategy.
That a bad ass jacket Mr Motobob!!! Where can I get one???? Please.
As for the design i've never looked twice at the 1250, always considered them huge cow-like old man bikes. But the 1300 however feels very different, it looks sleek and sporty, like you ll actually will be able to drive it offroad.
I just hope the price of the 1250 drop quickly...maybe we as normal day to day workers can afford one.
the 1300 looks like a pretty cool V-Strom….
1250GS equipped with halogen headlights is a shame for BMW.
Some only came with halogen lights....since they had supply chain issues...the upgraded kit is $600 us if you want to swap out to led adaptive set....
I think halogen lights have better visibility than LED’s in some scenarios
12 kg means absolutely nowt when you ride the bike considering your over 200 kg anyway
It will be interesting to see how the more sport touring 1300RS will perform. Im not the biggest fan of the adventure bike look.
This is not a comparison. This is a review of the 1300
I want a very light GS with no tech !
I'm happy with my 2019 GSA 1200 TE. 4k less than the 1250GSA for spec to spec and 10k less than the GS1300.... the 1300 isn't 10k better.
I don’t like the new headlight, I like the 1250’s A symmetrical German efficient quirky headlight
I really like the new look. Both bikes look great though.
1250 the best look
Not a fan of adventure bikes, but have sat on the new GS1300. And, I can touch the ground. As for looks, adventure bikes are ugly, but is the best looking of any of them.
Bro trypod on your backpack can be deadly you need to find a other way to carry that thing
Going to be honest. I appreciate this review a lot. But the constant noise of fabric rubbing was so off putting
its 23 Thousand pounds though.. tell me why you would buy this over a Tracer9gt+ or the New suzuki 1000GX which are both 15k
People who buy BMW wouldn't really want a Yamaha or a Suzuki though...we are badge snobs don't you know!?
@@Jasonkenny- Haha is that why GS owners don't Nod. think they are better than everyone but really they have just overpayed
@@christophereaves7108 I have the R9T Scrambler and I nod…I think it’s a myth that GS owners don’t nod…I even nod at friggin scooters before I realise it ain’t a bike!
Oh the PCP tarmac dreamers NO1 bike.. Not to be outdone by the jones's
Took the 1300 demo bike back after literally minutes and said no thanks to the bemused dealer 😑
Key word “Tank”, end of story. It will only ever be a street bike that can handle gravel roads.
In engine new 1300 has almost 20hp more not just few more. From engine alone new is far better.
1250= Man’s Bike. 😆🤘 1300 = Girls. 🎀
It's not heavy enough. Sport touring bikes should be really, really heavy.
Smoke and mirrors Bob, my 2005 R 1200 GS weighed 223kg wet,18 years ago and 14kg lighter. The 12kg weight saving over the 1250 will be a boon for born again bikers who are 30 kg over weight.
I think both bikes are ugly but i hated that wonky headlight of the old one so the new defo has a better looking headlight
Why did they put the radar above the light? Looks like a receeding hairline to me. Would have made better looking sence to have put it below.
1250 all the way!
Irans Foreign Minister at Davos?
Whats the point of these bikes? How many owners actually venture out on real adventures? Too big, too complicated, too expensive.
From what i have seen, most people who own these go on rides which are majority tarmac and some offroad but whoch is known and not venture into the unknown.
I just dont get it.
1250 gs much Looking Better than 1300gs
Always feel like the 1150 gs is just as good as these new ones the tech is fucking pointless save yaself 17 grand and just buy an old one
When corporations genetically engineer our children will they offer optional packages?
Sorry I still love the 1250
GS 1250 Super Modèle 🦏
1250 is more than enough for me. And the 1300 is just fugly
1250 for me
Bro I like that bike but I mean Uganda
Just came to knowledge that they stop making the 1250gsa..and the 1300 is the definitive model. It's ugly AF!!! They just ruined the BMW trademark for trail. Can't believe this ... unreal
That bike your reviewing, nice bike too expensive don’t like the fact it hasn’t a normal rear light,
Auto brake on a motorcycle is a recipe for disaster. This system already works like shit on cars, imagine on a two wheel vehicle. Like, maybe you want to overtake a car close, and the system brakes, you lose balance and bam.
I would hold BMW responsible for said crash.
