    Hello photography friends! I’m releasing this video even though it really could have used more editing, some parts needed to be cut and the voice-over should have been re-done because the thoughts were disjointed and didn’t flow well. My laptop is nearing the end of its usefulness, both Photoshop and iMovie kept crashing during the editing process, I guess it is time to give up this 8 year old machine and get a new one. In the meantime, I plan on beginning my photo-walks again in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully I’ll have some new material soon. I've missed everyone, say hi in the comments section! :)

    At 9:25 you describe the patterns of a fallen leaf reminding you of fields below, seen from a plane window. Just before you said these words, I had thought, how much those veins in that leaf were very much like a map of our lives. Siblings rising from the base and spreading out in different directions and then their own offspring branching off to form their own lineage and so on. Two aggressive forms of cancer have put an end to my holding my heavy camera/lens combos these days, so more than ever I look towards my mobile phone and compact camera to fulfill my love of macro photography. More than ever before, your gentle voice and your gift of bringing forth natures beauty gives me inspiration to keep walking nature's pathways while I still can. Thank you for each and every video.

    Hi Liesl: since I found your channel I have been mesmerized by you and I’ve watched many of your videos and will continue to watch them again because I know I have missed a lot of information just watching through one time. I enjoyed this forest walk and what you observed and took snap shots of. I hope you will do another one. I also hope you’ll do one on photographing spider webs and ferns. Maybe you have done so already and I haven’t seen it yet. Thanks a million for putting these incredible tutorials for us. They’re so meditative and yet so full of information.

    Your videos are always so informative, wonderfully narrated (your voice is really pleasant), visually pleasing, even the music is chosen perfectly. I don't watch these videos to learn things (since I'm no longer a beginner myself) as much as to get inspired, and I always do. I think the message you wanted to share really came through and I'm glad you released the video. In fact I hope it won't be long before the next one (especially with the spring on the way). I never felt bored while watching your videos nor I wished to skip through something. I don't use long telephoto lenses myself and you present their capabilities for nature close up photography really nicely, so I may give it a go some day. What you manage to do with a phone is fantastic, and even though I'm not into using them for photography, I do enjoy watching your images and I'm glad you include them in the videos. I wonder what kind of images you'd have made with some vintage lenses, that'd be fun to see as well if you ever feel inclined to do so. I don't normally comment on videos, but since I've enjoyed all your work I think it was long overdue. Greetings from Serbia. :)

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so kind, thank you for this lovely comment. I've been feeling a bit discouraged with my progress in making videos. I have big plans for making lots of videos this year though and comments like yours make it worthwhile because it is a huge effort as I work for weeks on just one video. I'm so glad you appreciate the work and I'm also happy you understood the overall message of this video and it means a lot coming from an experienced photographer such as yourself.
      I see so many photographers, even some who have been taking pictures for years are doing well with techniques sometimes but need more focus on composition and story-telling. I would like to focus on that as a theme in the videos this year.
      There is one video on my channel (about 5 videos back) titled "Close-up Nature Photography with a Vintage Lens" that you might like if you have not seen it yet.
      Thank you again for the support and encouragement, you put a smile on my face! :)

      Fortunately, things have not been so bad so far and your prospects are positive. It is better to put that laptop outside and look at the insurance or your partner of course. Don't know what is more effective or better? I live in Venlo Netherlands and this weekend it will be around 18 degrees Celsius and last weekend it was -15 degrees Celsius. Bizarre, but we humans are responsible for that ourselves. Mesne reading this does not forget that all of us must live on this planet and have NO alternative.

    I wish you would show us how you move your camera around so smooth and steady while videoing. When I try that the video is always shaking. Maybe you have something in that expensive equipment that you use that smooths everything out. I would sure like to know how you do it.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Stan! It's interesting you mention that because I get frustrated with myself about my video work, it feels unstable and shaky to me and I would love to get a gimbal to help with that. It could just be that since my footage is in small bursts, like 10-30 seconds long for each clip, it is easier to keep a little steady for a short while.
      Honestly, I have never noticed your video work to be unsteady, it looks good to me. What are you using as a recording device? Go Pro?

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the last couple years I use a GoPro while walking, so that solved the shaking problem there. But when I try to do the close ups of flowers like you do using my camera, I noticed my videos don’t look smooth like yours.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, yes, some cameras do get a bit shaky when you are close up, and or if you zoom in that can be a problem. I just try to use both of my hands to hold the camera steady, and I will often lock my arms to my sides (elbows resting against my body), that can help with stabilization. Other than that there isn't really much you can do unless you have a gimbal.

    There is a fine line between what is considered a snapshot or a photograph, or is there ?
    I have a friend who ONLY takes photos using an ND filter. He considers everything else a snapshot.
    Very strange in my mind.
