That is truly some creative handiwork.
And if performed by a Warlock, it can be totally resourcefree. At least in 5th edition.
Which it probably wasn't, considering he's talking about 'Wisdom damage'.
Still, the episode was good, and explains what Silent Image can do.

Unknown name basically there was a king with many sons, those sons were kinda dicks and lazy. Each of them were eventually given their own kingdom to rule yada yada. So one of these sons was peeved that the construction of his palace came second to Zeus’s temple and the temple was grander than his too. The Prince remembered that he and his siblings used to play pretend gods recounting the old stories so he decided to IMPERSONATE Zeus. While some fell for it at first, people began to realize he was fake so they were yelling at him, calling out the BS of this “fake Zeus”. Turns out Gods while rarely paying explicit attention can pick up someone saying your name among the background noise (this happens at parties or events all the time for people). He saw what was happening and smited EVERYONE.

I love when groups double dip on quest rewards. In one campaign I was in, we were being paid to investigate the defenses of a city by an enemy army. Unbeknownst to our employer, we'd also been hired by the leaders of that city to figure out who the mole that was leaking information was, unbeknownst to both we were part of a third party that needed a key figure extricated out of the city, and unbeknownst to all of us, there was a fourth party of a interplanetary army of lizard men that was already in the process of scry and frying the whole city.
In the end, we got our target out while framing him as the mole, delayed the new army long enough to allow an evacuation, then leaked the information about the cities defenses (manned by an occupying force of lizard men), and between looting and our payment, we'd wrung about four sessions worth of rewards out of this one event. This playing all sides thing ended up as a theme in this campaign until we'd kinda ended up as the only side left with all the resources.

My character knew draconic, and we coupled a few spells and with help of very stealthy charater, made a huge dragon appear and talk the kobolds into taking the "dragons's servants" (the party) to their lord. then the "dragon" disappeared into a magical sparkles and smoke, and we got out of possible eccounter :P

We used a orc-assimar cleric, a dhampir, and my CHA main stat magus to convince a town that they were being plagued by a vampire.
My magus pretended to be a priest. He had disguise and was basically just as much of a con man and rogue as he could be. He would sneak around at night and prick peoples' necks while they slept.
He would use illusions to have the 'vampire' be seen, but disappear after rounding a corner, or fly away, or some such nonsense.
Then, the adventuring party came into town, Vincent the Meager (my magus) playing the priest to this angelic, orc cleric Kroll, with silver tusks. Vincent said that Kroll was a God made flesh. A new God.
When the townsfolk announced their vampire problem, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to help them.
Vincent informed the townspeople that there was no cure for vampirism, and that the vampire must be vanquished (in pathfinder, curing a vampire is difficult, to say the least.)
We captured the vampire that night, a Dhampir spellsword, after having an epic battle of intentional near misses and illusion magics to wake the entire village.
Vincent and Kroll took him to the well and chained him down to face the sunrise, Vincent announcing that the sunrise would wash away the sins and wretched existence of this poor creature, while blessing him with holy water, which sizzled against the dhampir's flesh, drawing frightened gasps from the townsfolk.
But Kroll interrupted. He stepped forward, his back to the rising dawn, and asked the captive if he had intentionally chosen the path he was on. No. So Kroll offered the man a boon. A blessing of mercy. A divine miracle. Kroll reached out a hand and... Cast glitterdust. It was a beautiful, dazzling display of light.
And, as the sun rose behind the great orc, Kroll spoke thus, "Now, face the sun and your new fate, my child."
    And stepped aside.
The sunlight washed over the man, vampire no more. The captive wept, and swore his allegiance, and his everlasting soul to Kroll.
We never paid for an inn, food, or supplies in that village again. We had a base of operation and the beginnings of the Church of Kroll.
TL;DR: con men convince the village one of them is the avatar of an unknown God, using 1st through 3rd level spells. 10/10 would blaspheme again.

He was addicted to gambling and would use them to win when the time was right.(basically, lose a bit on purpose, raise the stakes a lot, win at any cost)
he used illusions to cheat, distract, scare people with random roars from random places. I had a plan to use phantasmal force...i think that's the name... to make a guy believe I had created a phantom golem from the corpses around(something to that effect, never had a chance to do it sadly)

    • @CaptainDCap
      @CaptainDCap 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@SaviorOfNirn Cover is a mechanical effect that increases your armor class. Cover is something you can gain regardless of visibility. (A wall of force gives you total cover, but you remain visible).
An illusion does not give you cover, as attacks can still pass through it. It can, however, effectively make you invisible. Being invisible does not stop you from being attacked.

In my first DnD quest, we went to go investigate some smoke that had been burning for a couple days now. So I and a couple people went to go investigate. Our party consisted of a Monk, 2 rangers, a bard, and a rogue went to go investigate. Every thing was going fine until we reached the end of the story and uncovered some bandits trying to steal and sell some suude. We began the fight and as you can tell, we didn't have any tanks so I was pretty much at the front lines the whole time. We managed to kill all the bandits in the area except one who managed to call for back up, bringing in 5 more Bandits and the Bandit leader. Things went bad, one of the rangers and I got downed and it all seemed lost until our bard got Levitate by a pixie NPC and then cast Silent Image on himself to create A halo over his head and a bright beam of light shining down upon him to create the illusion that he was a god himself and somehow managed to convince a few of the bandits except the bandit leader to surrender. To sell the image out, even more, he cast lay on hands on the ranger all while saying "I shall not allow my followers to die" and eventually brought me up as well. We ended up surviving the whole ordeal with everyone including my character thinking he really was a god.

The classic "Build Your Own Illusion" type spells are my favourite tool in any DnD system, simply because they reward players exponentially for thinking creatively. I've personally used them in combat to blind opponents, in diplomatic encounters to make an opponent feel outnumbered, I've used them as a double bluff against a strong willed opponent (put an illusion of a pit over an actual pit, knowing they'll see through the illusion and think there is no pit there, because who checks under an illusory pit for a second pit), I've used them to entertain bored gods, sneak past guards, and convince a troll that the bridge he guards was ten feet to the left of where it actually was.
All of which involves far more critical thinking than "which target is the most susceptible to fireballs", and rewards that extra thought.

With my current character, an arcane trickster, I typically use silent image as a decoy hologram to kite enemies to a certain area during the encounter or to draw aggro. It was particularly helpful during an encounter with some monsters that had a high damage multi-attack, i was able to confuse them long enough to buy our fighter enough time to both avoid high damage and do some damage himself. Creating a fake wall to obscure the party is a great idea though, i had never thought of about it.

But the villagers were overhunting the area. Soon, if they would continue, the village would fall to famine due to quite obvious absence of food. Same with lizardfolk. The both settlements would perish, a very bad fate. And by acting in the evil way, both settlements are saved... (2 thirds of peasants died, but hey, they would have anyway), and one third survived and serves under a reasonable rule in the castle. They also have saved lizardfolk from starving, and a local wildlife. So they actually saved a third of the village. And a whole lizardfolk settlement. And they figured out why they weren't sending anything, because the bloody gits overhunted the area and had nothing to catch. It's a win-win situation, and they actually acted in a reasonable and good manner.

I had a bard/rogue who's whole schtick was infiltrating. To that end silent image and minor illusion were my bread and butter. Both were amazing at getting in and out of places you weren't meant to be.
Eventually we had to get into a tiefling cult. I had mostly been using a disguise kit for premeditated stuff and saving minor illusion for on the fly work, but I decided my human needed a little something extra to really pass as a tiefling. In my mind, the lack of real horns were going to be a dead giveaway. A hood from a cultists robe wouldn't sit right, and if anyone swung anything above my head they'd hit thin air, so I got creative.
I used my proficiency in disguises to make mummer's horns that I could wear on my head. I can't remember if I used actual horns fitted onto a strap or if it was some sort of paper-mache arrangement. Either way, it worked great. Put on my horns and cloak, one minor illusion cast later and BAM! I'm a walking, talking, falling-off-of-balconies bona-fide cultist of Asmodeus.

    • @CSelH
      @CSelH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kingkasdin9767 You could use disguise self to this end, but it likewise would not be able to physically alter your body alone, only it's appearance. And as bard with limited known spells, having minor illusion was much more flexible than disguise self, and having proficiency with disguises meant I only needed to bother with using spells when I really needed to.
My guy was a little over the top and would often go incognito when it wasn't strictly necessary, but that was part of his schtick. Using a spell everytime I needed to look different would have left me with a lot fewer spell slots to work with the rest of the time. Disguise kit is very underrated imo.

someone told me later, I shouldn’t have been able to do that because nobody knows what Amodeus looks like, but my character was a tiefling and has imagination as to what he thought a demon head would look like, it was basically his own face with longer horns on top, and if nobody really knows what Asmodeus looks like, then the priest doesn’t know either and so the priest couldn’t know for sure that it wasn’t Asmodeus...
