Honestly I think the Philosophical question of "Can a Evil man regret everything he does, if so, what will he do to redeem himself?" Is honestly the most interesting thing about this quest.
That was the most interesting part of this quest for me, because Joshua CLEARLY regrets everything he did, he's trying to redeem himself... by killing himself. But is that right?

    • @TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure
      @TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Idk if I understood the quest correctly or remember correctly but I don't think he died thinking that it'd redeem him and cancel out his sins. Not like "I did wrong so I'll kill myself to pay for it". If I remember correctly, he said something like this world is full of violence and hatred, there are killings in every street... people have forgotten that love exists and what love actually is, and by doing this crucification, he wants to tell the world and make them realise, that love still does exists....and people should love and spread love and not hatred, and thus he wanted to do something good, something along those lines?
And I heard/read somewhere long time ago that you're already partially redeemed when you realise that you've done wrong and truly regret what you've done. And maybe that the next step is to do more good from now on, become a better person.
I mean, that makes sense, what has been done in the past has been done. You cannot change it by giving 'punishment' to the sinner, or in this case... yourself. It would be a waste because it doesn't change anything that has happened. Instead you're punishing a person who has already realised his mistake and is a good person now.
I may be wrong here but I believe it's not completely the sinner's fault if he does wrong things. After all, what has happened to us up until here, how we are raised, how the world around us behaves is what makes us...US. I believe a person raised in a good family and area, taught manners and understanding about what is wrong and what is right, and who also knows what pain, sorrow and suffering is, who has knowledge of things, and who understands the value of things would not want to do wrong.... whereas the same person if born in a poor family where his father is an abusive alcoholic, who has been used his whole life, who has only seen pain and suffering, who has to steal bread everyday just to survive could turn out to be a completely different person. We are always controlled by external factors and our conditions. I once heard a line somewhere which was something like, "a criminal is a person the society hasn't raised right". Ironically, it was from a radio in Grand Theft Auto V.

Hi, I agree with a lot of what you said.
But when I said he was killing himself to redeem himself, I actually meant to those he has wronged, not to god.
I say and believe this is the case because it is honestly the underlying narrative of the quest.
Move aside the religious nature of the quest and you get a man who's punishing himself for the things he's done, by killing himself, claiming and justifying it by saying "It's what god wants." But in reality, he just can't live in a world where he did all these things.
Or at least that was my interpretation and verdict when it came to processing everything that came from this quest.

This quest really hits you. My first playthrough with it will never be topped though, the timing of the quests of got after each stage was too perfect.
After the first half, with the sobering conversation with his victim's family, I got the call from Judy to come to her apartment almost as soon as I left the restaurant, and when I got there, I was greeted by the site of Ev. I had to turn the game off for a little while after that.
To top it off, after I completed the second half, after praying with Joshua and ultimately being the one to nail him to the cross, I walked out of the studio and recieved the call from River as I headed for my car, asking me to help him track down where his nephew might be. That was the second time I had to break.
This song really set the mood of the latter half of the quest, and it still gives me the same melancholy. So incredibly well done.

ohh thats the fun of the random do the quests at anytime nature of this game. Had something like that happen as well. I did the unmarked mission with the homless guy, that ends with you uncovering an actual conspiracy and that the homless dude outside vics is not actualy crazy. Into the later half of the Coin opperated boy. where you say good bye to Bredon the talking vending machine. Right into the last act of the prelez quest and all the revelations therein. So the conspiracy of some other force controlling the world kind of continued threw three quests. and about 2 hours. @@mushmonkey15

It reminds you that V is not a good person really. He or she. is a very VERY violent person. Willing to do really really horrible things. V and Joshua are not that different. Best quest in the game. From an atheist, the last moment of his crucifixion made me feel something was terribly wrong, even with him being a killer. You could tell he was literally sorry and regretted what he did, and the corpos were exploiting his redention for money. I went quiet, crying a bit, when Johnny bowed his head with a masterpiece of a score. It made me feel different. Whoever came up with this idea is a genius. This could have been a black mirror episode tbh.

I misted up during this mission, I'm not even going to lie.
I chose to sit with him as he prayed (didn't pray myself) and declined nailing him to the cross, though I bore witness. Having to sit there for those two or so minutes after he fell silent made me feel extremely uncomfortable and disturbed, so much so I made my V run from the studio as quickly as I could when I was given back control as if I could outrun this theme. Seeing Johnny stand before the cross with his head bowed, in those rare moments of absolute silence further cemented home the situation. Bravo for the devs for making this such a stark, tasteful yet also horrendous moment.

  • @Tenebrys

He's going to do it. Joshua's really going to do it.
You're not one to pray. Never were. But V doesn't give you a choice. When he folds his hands, so do you. Try to pull them apart all you want, but it's like they're nailed together. That's how it works.
Joshua has another request after the Lord's Prayer. He asks V to accompany him to the cross, drive in the nails. You want to refuse, but V moves your lips for you. And you walk with Joshua, reciting the lines as he stretches his arms out over those of the cross.
Your optics show you where the nails are to go. Just behind the wrists, between the radius and ulna, forcing them apart. V does pause for a moment, to look down at his hands. So do you. You can't comprehend the degree of pain this will cause. Neither can V.
But V takes the hammer anyway.
The first nail touches Joshua's wrist. The skin is soft, the flesh indenting. You can hear Joshua panting, trying to contain his fear. V grits his teeth, and so do you.
As the hammer is raised, you remember everything. You remember the war. You remember debauching yourself, debauching others, abusing Alt, losing Alt. You remember the killings, and you remember that you can't even remember how many you've killed. Let alone the excuses you made for each life you took.
The hammer descends, and time seems to slow. Maybe the Kerenzikov is malfunctioning. Or maybe it's that you're remembering 2023. That was the year you set off a nuclear bomb in the middle of the Night City skyline. V's hammer is still falling as you see yourself tossing a duffel bag into an open elevator and shooting the cable. You try to flee, but you fall from the helicopter and you're seized by Adam Smasher. The hammer is still falling as you're transported away, staring silently at the skyline -- at Arasaka Tower.
Then you see the flash, the detonation. The light of nuclear fire stabs into your eyes. V's hammer finds its mark. Joshua lets out a scream of pain -- unimaginable, mind-shattering pain. Tears spring to V's eyes, and to yours. You want it to stop. You need it to stop.
But you're not in control. Your limbs move without your bidding, like you're a puppet on strings, strings threaded through your wrists. The first blow didn't pierce the wood of the cross. And there are more nails to drive into place after this one.
    V raises the hammer again.
