Use silicon earpiece covers, they act as a thermal insulator preventing the aluminum from acting as a thermal heat sink, which causes the condensation.
2:06 I saw water in my drivers yesterday and panicked I had it upside down and bass boosted it on max volume and it seems to clear it up
The problem is the materials Apple choose to make the AirPods max from - which aluminium. The problem is not sweat, condensation isn't sweat, condensation is the reaction of air against a cold surface. Moisture held in the air when rapidly hits a cold surface releases the moisture in the form of droplets-a process called condensing. it's not sweat being sucked into the headphones it's warm air hitting the cold surface of the headphones - in this case aluminium. Aluminium is a very good condenser, and so is copper - both used in air conditioning units for this very reason. Aluminium corrodes quicker than copper due to condensation build up, in fact it is particularly prone to corrosion caused when it comes into contact with air and water. In some instances this can be useful as it can actually strengthens the aluminium, but not useful when it's used in something like headphones where an electrical current is present it's no good at all. The problem in the AirPods Max is unavoidable, because of the extensive use of aluminium in their build, which looks great, but performs badly - hence you won't find other headphones using aluminium in such a large part of the builds, plastic is used for this very reason and it works very well.
As far as I can see in the four pairs I have had the problem seems to be focussed on corrosion forming on the connectors in the APM headband, they look like little lightening charger points. I have cleaned them and most recently have gone to town cleaning the points using alcohol solution, an electric toothbrush and a wooden scraper along with the magnifier on my iPhone as the corrosion isn't easy to spot with the naked eye, it seems the tiniest spots cause the APM to malfunction. I'm talking a good 15 minutes scrubbing each side of the points, to get rid of all corrosion. Every time I do this it usually works, if it doesn't I repeat the process and it works, but sometimes it hasn't worked at all. However the problem returns after a period, on inspection the corrosion has returned and densation causing corrosion.
This is a huge ball ache for something that costs £500, it's utterly ridiculous how this was not considered in the design, production and testing by Apple and is pretty shocking. If you live anywhere there is air and moisture it can happen and that is planet earth - otherwise you'd be dead! If I had realised this before buying them there is no way I would have got them - but as I didn't I am stuck in a return / cleaning cycle - this is not water damage it is corrosion. Your head and body is warm the headphones like anything using energy get warm, the warm air around them hits the aluminium, rapidly cools causing condensation which causes corrosion. The design of the aluminium connectors seems to be the downfall of the APM although I can't be sure if it's not happening in other areas you can't see. Apple should have done a product recall a long time ago, it is impossible for them to not know this - I have a high school science education and worked it out. There is a reason electronic devices are generally made of plastic and not metal like aluminium that acts as a built in condenser to mess up your incredibly expensive headphones. My last time experiencing this with Apple was the AirPort Extreme (extremely sh-t) router which basically didn't work. Avoid them like the plague.
Very informative. Thank you.
It's not exclusive to Max. I pulled out the cushions of my AT after a few hours and it had water too. What's causing this condensation is the mesh (and not a thin sponge) that Apple decided to use. For most headphones, sponge gets wet instead. That being said, the speaker assembly is glued on I think to the aluminium interior so water should not go in to electrical from there. BUT, the hole at the top to remove headband goes hot into the connectors which connect unshielded to the main PCB. So, tape over that little hole and these should be fine.
Purchased a pair in New Zealand and can confirm condensation showing up on the speaker mesh and on the driver itself. No actual problems with noise cancelling or sound quality, but a fair amount of moisture build up!
Thanks for sharing your experience, Warenoticer! That’s cool you’re in New Zealand-I guess this is a global issue then because I’m in the USA haha! Anyway, that’s what I noticed as well, with no actual problems seeming to be caused by the condensation (and now I’ve been using my AirPods Max for about a month). Honestly I just ignore the condensation at this point by not removing the earpads, besides on the rare times when I do take them off. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new AirPods Max and thanks for watching!

@@josephjparsons well?
After almost a month using the AirPod max exclusively to workout I’ve noticed this weird sound in the left side of the headphones and couldn’t tell what was going on, making the long story short I’ve discovered this condensation issue and got really disappointed, I’m returning them tomorrow! I’m curious to know how are your AirPods after a year using them.
After a month of using mine at the gym and I sweat alot too I've notice the weird sound in the left ear also...Did you just return yours with no remedy?
I didn’t know condensation was an issue until yesterday. Yesterday I started to hear what sounds like wind rushing though my left ear. Then i removed the cup and saw the condensation. Then I cleaned them with a towel and it stopped. Today it happened a couple of times and I cleaned them and it solved the issue for a bit. Disclaimer, I use mine when I do my evening walks.
I have had mine for two months, and use mine for walks and noise cancellation, and i too started to have the wind rushing sound in the left ear as well.
I have the condensation issue also, I workout in them every day and have owned them for a little over a month now and about 3 weeks ago, is when I started noticing issues. They won’t detect being on my head, they won’t connect to my phone, and all I hear in my ears is like if I’m standing against the wind on a super windy day. If that makes sense. So I can see how it does effect them
Wow, this is literally the same issue I am experiencing although I can still use them and connect them to the phone but that super windy day sound is something I experience in the right side - I think I will do the good old put in rice and hope they dry up
i was just about to buy them but now i will not because i don't want to have headaches with this problem .
smart
Sony wh xm5 has the same problem, as does the xm4 series. Condensation even causes rumbling noises because it confuses the ANC microphones. The condensation here is inside a non-accessible compartment (faces the outside) and can only be slowly evaporated away in dry air. The condensation facing the ears is removable but also doesn't cause the ANC rumbling.
If they didn’t have removable ear cups nobody would know anything about it at all.
Very good point, Warenoticer! I've been thinking the same thing haha. Anyway thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe for more awesome tech videos!
@@Warenotice done buddy.
You’re the man!
I know this is an old post but I have had bose and sony m4s. Those headphones also get hold and after listening they would be wet on the ear cup on the m4s. I was like wtf so it does happen with others.
I have the same issue. I’ve had mine a little over 8 months. Not only do I have the condensation but my hair line gets really sweaty wearing them and my ears really hot. Now they are starting to not want to connect automatically and sometimes I hear wind noises on one side. I need to call for support because I really like the sound and noise cancelling when they do work.
This happened to me today. condensation built up inside the speaker and now there's a scratchy noise in my right ear indictive of water damage. The ANC and transparency mode are both degraded now. I'm hoping that air drying them will help but in my experience with the Pros, it will not.
What ended up happening?
Im on my 6th replacement through Apple care+. The ones they send out for replacements are crap. They always seem to have some type of issues with them. Its a hassle returning and stuff.
I just got them and saw it in mine after 3-4 hours at the desk. There wasn’t much water but there was water on the drivers so I don’t know what to do. Can I return them to apple if it turns out to be a issue? How are yours holding up?
I have had my AirPod Max for two months, and use mine for walks and noise cancellation, and I just started to have the wind rushing sound in the left ear... This is way too expensive a headphone to have this issue, and to have it have problems just two months after buying them...
Hello from Germany, I have the same problems, do you have a solution by now?
Just bought my airpods max this month and 3 days after when i removed the magnetic cup, its sweating.. im not sure if this is normal.. or should i ask the apple store for replacement since its still has 7 days replacement..let me know
Apple should have put the sealant that is used in their iPhones on their AirPods maxes so condensation no matter how bad won’t phase those headphones.
Mine has affected the active noise cancellation
My son has been stressed out dealing with the unit issues. The headpoones don't connect to his device now. This will be the 2nd replacement and the wait time and hassle is excruciating
I bought the AirPods Max in 2022 at age 17 and 6 months later I experienced no audio and disconnections. In addition, I had to send my headphones to Apple every month until when I was out of warranty they says it was liquid damage
This definitely happens in other headphones made of plastic. Even though the ear pads on my ATH M50x's are harder to remove, you definitely can remove them like with a lot of other headphones. I removed the pads to wash them because sweat build up and they started to smell. While I didn't my remove the grate and over the drivers and other tech, there was condensation on the plastic grate behind the pad once I removed the pad. I just don't think people look at it as much because it's a little more difficult to remove the pads on more traditional pairs of cans than on the Max.
I'm in the same boat. We're in lockdown in the UK and because I bought my pair in store I have to wait for the lockdown to be lifted before I can return them, I've been waiting for three months to return them but now I'm thinking maybe I'll just chance them and see if the condensation causes them to break in the long run. Think I'll take them out the box again and start using them, but before, the condensation used to appear after 90 minutes of wearing them
Yeah it's definitely a difficult choice with Apple Stores so inaccessible. For me, I've just been using my AirPods Max like normal since I've posted this video and honestly I don't even bother to wipe the condensation off anymore. I like the AirPods Max and I bought them to use them so that's what I'm doing! Plus I don't want to deal with Apple Support again, I just got done having a horrible support experience with them when my M1 MacBook Pro was bricked during charging (video here: th-cam.com/video/vsIarUQf4ZE/w-d-xo.html). Anyway, thanks so much for watching and don't forget to subscribe for more awesome tech videos!
I’m already noticing issues from this, my right cup CONSTANTLY makes loud static noise after an hour or two wearing them. It’s annoying on how I spent so much money towards them for it to have this issue
Did you figure out a first for this i experience it too
clearly they knew this before putting these on the market and still charged double than all other brands..
Happens to me, and now its broken
The condensate may not be so bad. If truly condensation, then this is pure water, H2O, without mineral content. Pure distilled water is a very poor electrical conductor. Thus, this water is far less likely to short out or damage the electronics. However, pure water is very corrosive to metals. So some damage may slowly accrue. I feel like this will not be a big issue. No reviewer has thought of the reality of distilled vs. tap water. Big difference.

I currently love my AirPods Max and their sound quality but the condensation issue happens to me almost every day and I'm thinking of contacting Apple support to have my earphones looked at and checked. I'm pretty sure it's the aluminum that is causing the heat difference between outside the earphones and the ear cups themselves. I'm not sure but I might ask for a refund

@@s.denhartog52 its not beacause of the colour...
Apple has changed my headphones 4 times because they randomly stopped working. Last time (today) I noticed a lot of condensation inside... I think that´s why they fail over and over...
The condensation is an issue and is cause is glitching. The condensation likely has salts in them which gets inside of the headphone components and causes corrosion on the metal contacts. Specifically the connections at the ends of the headband. If you disconnect the headbands and look at the metal contacts on the headband tips, you'll see that the connections that carry signal across there can have a buildup of green corrosion on the tips, that I believe is from the salt in the condensation. If you clean that off, in my experience the performance will improve until it builds up again.
I broke mine in 2 weeks wearing them working in a warehouse all day. The condensation got so bad that water would drip out the headphones when i removed the ear cups. The audio would also get very muffled when the drivers got wet
Sorry to hear that, Warenoticer! How’d they break?
@@Warenotice I’m assuming from condensation because even after they dried off the headphones would make a wind sound as soon as I put them on even when nothing was playing. They eventually stopped playing sound and I returned them back to Amazon where I got them and got a refund

I been using mines and haven’t had any problems my take is maybe the clear silicone covers are insulating the aluminum from getting cold. Now when summer gets here i will see how heat and humidity will affect.

I just throw a couple of Silica Gel Packets inside and they will absorb any humidity. just kidding, the trouble is the aluminium dissipates more heat than plastic and so condensation builds more ease.
