The one where you said John Tunstall was like a father figure to Billy is exaggerated considering Tunstall was only 24. Tunstall needed all the help he could get in his ongoing feud with the Murphy/Dolan faction so that’s probably why he dropped the charges and hired Billy. Tunstall probably treated Billy no different to how he treated his other employees.
Yes, of course they are. Been following his story since I was a kid. Depends on who’s telling it. The story tends to change. Been to his grave, and even that’s in doubt.
I do , stories about him were exaggerated back in the day also . Btw the thumb nail picture is one I've not seen before which is interesting , are there any details about this please ?

So is it fair to say that Billy the kid was a product of his environment? It sounds like he had a very hard life, I do feel a touch of sadness for him, he was so young
The life in the american frontier era was intense. Death comes left and right, more kids become orphans and more people are forced into becoming outlaws to survive. We are lucky to not live in that era but it does make a really good history.
I taught school breifly in Las Cruces, New Mexico. There was a bar turned museum, that he frequented when he was alive, that got me curious to know more about him. So I started asking the local people about him. And dig around in the local library. I quickly took notice of people's reaction. Their faces lit up like Christmas trees. So I had to know why, clearly! I was told that the U.S. , and Mexican Cattle Barons were taking land by force to graze their ever growing stock. They allegedly too, also had a hand in trying to wipe out, the Apache, Mescalero, and Comanche natives, for land, as well. That Billy was an active vigilante for the be poor. And still a hero in their eyes today. Also that these wealthly men hired lawmen to start smear campaigns, protect them and take out Billy and his gang. He I understand had to be ambushed, because he was a quick draw with his gun. He may have had some anger , issues , because his stepfather , told he and his brother that he would never have them... So sad when you think about it.
I saw a tv documentation that tells the story exactly how you are telling it. The winner writes the history books. But, apparently, the people remember.
His legend will probably never die, in different forms throughout history this country needed an outlaw to bring justice against injustice, collusion etc
This Kid was born and loved during some very difficult social times in our country's history. Due to that and the limited communication nationwide, he became a living legend icon. Many silently desired to mimmick his carefree lifestyle. In today's world, he would become only yesterday's news story and be forgotten. His story is tragic.
Try hats true! Essentially Billy would be referred to today, as a sociopath to or possibly a psychopath...Billy was a overrated Delinquent looking for love in all the wrong places, as the song goes.
“Billy the Kid was the bravest man I ever knew. He did not know what fear meant. Everyone who knew him loved him. He was kind and good to poor people, and he was always a gentleman, no matter where he was. When in danger, he was the coolest man I ever saw- he acted like a flash from a gun. He was quick as kitten and when he aimed his pistol and fired, something dropped; he never missed his mark. Hijinio (Yginio) Salazar (Regulator and close friend) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Billy was a brave, resourceful and honest boy; he would have been a successful man under other circumstances. I loved the youngster in the old days, and can say now, after the passing fifty years, that I still love his memory. When Billy was killed in 1881 by Pat Garrett, I was in Rio Arriba County. Though I heard the news with sorrow, it was by no means a surprise. His opponents were constantly on his trail, making his capture and killing merely a question of time. It was impossible for him to work or make an honest livelihood; otherwise many of his friends would gladly have hired him and given him a chance to settle down under Governor Wallace’s’ terms of pardon. But the Kid was never permitted to halt his career. His enemies were determined to have his life and would not stop until they had taken it. He was compelled to live the life of an outlaw, though his outlawry consisted more of stealing cattle than of killing. Cattlemen were organizing their associations and employing men to rid the country of thieves, of which Billy the Kid was by no means the most outstanding. But because he was so well-known, he became the target of the officers. The motive behind Pat Garrett’s relentless pursuit of the Kid was that his death meant money and the office of sheriff of Lincoln County. The Kid was a thousand times better and braver than any man hunting him, including Pat Garrett. Lived in and worked a ranch in Carrizozo and White Oaks, Lincoln County New Mexico. There were a few old Mexican cowboys that said their fathers and grand dads knew the kid, and had seen him alive long after Garrett supposedly shot him. I went in and was the first to discovered that they had killed my little boy. I hated those men and am glad that I have lived long enough to see them all dead and buried.” And this is Jesus Silvia (very good friend of billy) he is the one that digg Billy grave ! Jesus Silva- (Fort Sumner resident and friend, commenting on the events that led to the killing of Billy the Kid. An interview with Jack Hull 1937) “ It was the night of July 14, 1881. It had been a hot day throughout the valley and Mesa Redondo country. I had strolled over to a neighbor’s house and on my return had stopped under a Cottonwood tree for a moment, when the Kid, whom I had known for some time, strolled up. He had just ridden into town. He was hot and tired and we drank beer together. He told me he was hungry and that he was going to the home of Don Pedro Maxwell for a cut of fresh beef for his supper, which was being prepared at a nearby house. We parted there and in a few minutes there were shots. The news soon spread that Garrett had shot the Kid at Maxwell’s home. I ran over there and Garrett, who had run out of the house, told me to go in and see if the Kid was dead.” In an interview with Miguel Otero Jr. 1938: “ There on the floor, we (Silva and Deluvina) saw Billy stretched out, face down. We turned him over, and when Deluvina realized fully it was the Kid, she began to cry bitterly, interspersing with her tears the vilest curses she could bestow on the head of Pat Garrett (who may have just walked in and noticed the Kid was now lying on his back, which will explain his version of how the Kid’s body was position). We asked permission to remove the body, Pete Maxwell suggesting removal to the old carpenter’s shop. We laid the body on the carpenter’s bench and placed candles around the corpse.” Shortly before the Kid was killed... “We had heard strange voices coming from the peach orchard but had given no thought to who it might be. If we had, the Kid’s life might have been saved. It was Pat Garrett and his two deputies. Billy would not have walked into the trap laid for him. Someone in Fort Sumner must have given Billy away.” “I have heard reports which say that Billy the Kid is still alive. I know that Pat Garrett killed the Kid on July 14, 1881, in Pete Maxwell’s bedroom. I also know with absolute certainty that he was buried in the old graveyard the next day.” and this is a quote from Frank Lobato Frank Lobato- (Friend and Fort Sumner resident, commenting on the night the Kid was killed) “Billy had been very popular at Fort Sumner and had a great many friends, all of who were indignant towards Pat Garrett. If a leader had been present, Garrett and his two officers would have received the same fate they dealt Billy.”

It is ultra impressive that he died, being one of the most Wanted men in the country yet nobody thought to take a picture of his dead body. Considering that many of the people who knew him stated they knew him for decades after his supposed death. I would think that there's more Credence to his surviving the supposed assassination by his close friend Pat Garrett who never was able to live down the fact that he couldn't prove that he had ever killed Billy the Kid.
@@benscott8747 because it's more than likely they killed one of the Mexican Sidekicks that were at the ranch. And being that Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid were fairly close friends. They used it as a pretext for him to disappear. Considering not very many outside of the area knew what he look like, that was easy for him to do. They have only ever found two photographs of the man and the one is from quite a distance away.
Yeah he actually killed billy the Kidder who was a notorious prankster with an unfortunate name. The real billy the kid lived next door and after hearing gunshots ran away.
You are exactly correct. Most "outlaws" in the late 19th century were photographed after death. Whether it be execution or being shot down in the street. Look them up. There are tons of photos of deceased outlaws online. As wanted as he was and famous as he was, somebody would have wanted to see him dead. Pictures would have been taken. Things go much easier when your Sheriff buddy "shoots" you in the dead of night. Lol I'm sure he and Pat made a deal. Billy got to keep his heart beat and half the bounty on him while leaving New Mexico for life and Garrett got the other half of the bounty and the fame and notoriety that went with killing "the most dangerous man in America" at the time.
1) Billy's grave in Fort Sumner is a shrine of sorts and advertised to anyone driving the highway there. 2) The original Lincoln county courthouse, in Lincoln, has been kept as is, even with the bullet holes from Billy's gun. 3) Little known factoid-Pat Garrett had a quick temper. He was actually elected sheriff of several counties. He was shot and killed outside Las Cruces by someone that Pat was trying to start a fight with. Pat's reputation is why the shooter was no billed by a grand jury. 4) During the filming of Young Guns 2, the director bragged that his movie would be more historically true than the John Wayne classic Chisum (which was about the Lincoln County war). When the movie came out, the Albuquerque Journal asked a historian to assess both movies. Chisum won out, but it almost goes without saying that both movies deviate from the truth. 5) The owner of a Roswell McDonald's franchise fought a long (and losing) legal battle to keep his franchise. One outstanding aspect of this store was a series of paintings on the wall that depicted the Lincoln County war. I often wonder what became of those paintings.
Jess Evans rode with Billy for a time and told a reporter in the 1920"s that " William" was still alive and living in Texas. If he survived, this has to be the best evidence.
As true as that statement is... it has nothing to do with Billy the Kid who was known to be extremely talented and charming, well educated and very gifted with persuasion, had a bad habit of trusting people, and kept trying to walk on the side of the law until he almost died at the hands of every level of law enforcement in his region and literally believed he had no other just recourse (than "the hammer").
Billy spoke spanish fluently and the Mexican Vaqueros and Natives loved him, they even will shed blood for him too because Billy understood how it was to be hungry without food in those New York days so in Mexico and in the west Billy shared his hunt(Food-Deer etc) of game with the poor. That's your weight in gold right there!! Priceless on the way he won the hearts of the Poor folks!! Smart fella...
Pat Garett was a democrat on the take. I believe he set up someone else to take the hit so he could collect the reward. This gave the kid a chance to life. It also gave Garrett a nice payday without the risk of getting killed.
Billy himself was a vindictive and gutsy kid who grew up in such a tough environment. It is hard for this kid to be a law-abiding citizen when good/bad people killed his trusted friend or friends while the local government betrayed him and sentenced him to death. The bottom line is Billy had no chance to be civic or to live in a law-protected environment. When being physically bullied and not fighting back would be a quick death sentence. Billy chose to fight back and lived to his 21st year. Be assured this Billy's theme replayed many times in the world of Homosapiens since Billy's death. Be assured again this theme will continue replaying itself.

It is hard to believe that childhood mortality was 25% in the tenements of New York. You see, my great-grandmother, born in 1888, endured a 50% infant mortality in her parents' generation, her own generation and she lost half her children. And that was considered normal at the time. But from the stories she, her daughter and my mother told it seems something had gone wrong in their world. One of the scariest moments of my life was when I was four years old and JFK had just lost his baby while in the White House. I almost died of measles, had rubella and mumps. I remember with rubella that there were little red spots under my fingernails and inside my lips. There is a Scottish Lament for the Children: in the 1700's, probably after Culloden, there was a ship that carried settlers from Scotland to America. Measles broke out on shipboard and the children all died. What this story tells us is that measles is too virulent to have crossed the Atlantic until the development of steamship transport. By the time any sailing ship arrived in America (after about a month) everyone on board would either be immune or dead. No in-between. That's how measles wiped out the Mandan Indians: not until steamboats. Billy the Kid was born within a generation of steamship transport. He may have thought 25% infant mortality was high. Once we had faster transport, 50% infant mortality seemed to be normal.

A lot of this is false such as the first killing of the sherif that Billy is supposed to have committed . There was a gunfight between the warring factions and bullets were flying everywhere from countless different guns . In all probability the fatal shot probably came from another person . Certainly there were much more dangerous men about at the time in the gangs than Billy . Also the reason why Billy got the blame ( unfairly ) was because he had changed sides in the Lincoln county wars and gone over to the side who were being taken unfair advantage of . The powers that be at the time were a corrupt band of rich landowners who had bought off the governor of the land and the local authorities . They were totally corrupt , yet held the power and wanted to make an example of Billy for daring to change sides and threatening to reveal the truth . They wanted to silence him . None of this is mentioned here and there are many other mistakes and errors . Another is that a couple more killings attributed to Billy were again in gang shootouts and were possibly not down to him although he was involved in the fight . Also it mentions here that Billy was well known for his fast gun etc . This is blatantly Not True . He was just a normal kid with a rifle and a handgun . There is NO evidence whatsoever that he had any prowess in using it . He did have a quick brain though evidently . Another thing left out is that in another killing a bounty hunter tried to kill him and Billy gave him a chance to walk away before he had to shoot him or be shot himself . Also the last two killings as he desperately tried to escape jail were against men who had fought , or were in the employ of the corrupt land owners . At least one of them was guilty of having a hand in unfair gang killings and used to allegedly goad and torture Billy while he was behind bars . Hardly the behaviour of an upright law abiding officer of the peace . And finally we come to Pat Garrett . There is little doubt according to most historians that during his life he was much more of an out law than Billy ever was . For one thing he took employment from what he KNEW was a totally Corrupt and Immoral syndicate , because they paid him well . He knew without a shadow of doubt that Billy was Innocent of many of the trumped up charges , and he knew that his Corrupt employers just wanted to silence and make an example of him so that others wouldn’t get any ideas about trying to go against them . And lastly the illegal killing of Billy himself . No mention is made here of the fact that Garrett changed his testimony TWICE during the trial . First he said that Billy had a gun ( as was mentioned incorrectly here ) then when it was pointed out that NO gun was found on Billy or anywhere near him , he said , “ oh I think it was a knife then “ It is not even positive that he held a knife either but if he did it seemed likely that he was entering the kitchen to carve himself a piece of meat to eat . Still either way , there is little doubt in hindsight that Garrett was LYING . He shot Billy in cold blood because he had been ordered to silence him by his evil and corrupt employers . And he did this all for money . From everything that I have read about him Pat Garrett was not a good person and he cowardly shot Billy who he knew had been framed and made a scapegoat . One of the few things correct in this video is the fact that Billy the Kid had a very unfortunate life , the vast majority of it , not of his own making . The Truth is very sad indeed .

You are very much correct. One thing bothers me, though. In order for Garrett to collect the reward money, he had to get hold of a person of authority that could verify the identity of the man that Garrett claimed to be Billy. That person arrived, not bringing a photographer which seem strange considering that lesser outlaws had their pictures taken after their demise in a shootout or the like. The given description did not fit Billy at all. The body was of an older man with a full beard, and wrong color of eyes. These facts I had from a book I read at a library back in the late 1980s. Unfortunately I do not recall the name of the book or the author.

@@thenextshenanigantownandth4393 Who knows? It still remains that his identity was confirmed by several people that actually knew Billy the Kid. There were also other outlaws who called themselves Billy the Kid. " Fed up with the persistent stories that the notorious outlaw escaped death and went on to live a long life, historian Robert Stahl last week went to a district court in Fort Sumner and petitioned the state of New Mexico to retroactively create an official death certificate for Billy the Kid. “Enough is enough about and from the supporters of the Billy the Kid imposters,” Stahl writes in the opening of his 29-page petition. “A major reason millions have supported these imposters is their claim that no official death certificate was issued because there was insufficient evidence to confirm that it was the authentic Billy the Kid who was shot and killed that night,” Stahl goes on to write. He points out, however, that death certificates were rarely issued in 1880s New Mexico, particularly in rural areas such as Fort Sumner." From History dot com. So it's still murky. Tunstall probably treated Billy no different to how he treated his other employees.

What the
I don’t think he was ever a bad kid but he lived a tough life from the beginning and made bad decisions
Billy was very unlucky, he was dealt a bad hand at every turn
Very cool! Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hijinio (Yginio) Salazar (Regulator and close friend)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Billy was a brave, resourceful and honest boy; he would have been a successful man under other circumstances.

@D L I don't believe that story ... Brushy Bill Roberts was not Henry McCarty !
Lived in and worked a ranch in Carrizozo and White Oaks, Lincoln County New Mexico. There were a few old Mexican cowboys that said their fathers and grand dads knew the kid, and had seen him alive long after Garrett supposedly shot him. A forensic scientist compared the known photo of Billy with tha of Brushy Bill Roberts taken in the 1940's or so, and that the two men were ibe and the same. I believe them over crooked politicians.
@@benwhittington2164 This are Billy the Kid good friend ,Not crooked politicians
Deluvina Maxwell ,Billy was like a son to her
Deluvina Maxwell- (Resident of Fort Sumner and friend commenting on the night the Kid was killed) “He (Garrett) was afraid to go back to the room to make sure of whom he had shot! I went in and was the first to discovered that they had killed my little boy. I hated those men and am glad that I have lived long enough to see them all dead and buried.”
And this is Jesus Silvia (very good friend of billy) he is the one that digg Billy grave !
I ran over there and Garrett, who had run out of the house, told me to go in and see if the Kid was dead.”
In an interview with Miguel Otero Jr. We laid the body on the carpenter’s bench and placed candles around the corpse.”
Shortly before the Kid was killed... I also know with absolute certainty that he was buried in the old graveyard the next day.”
and this is a quote from Frank Lobato
Frank Lobato- (Friend and Fort Sumner resident, commenting on the night the Kid was killed) “Billy had been very popular at Fort Sumner and had a great many friends, all of who were indignant towards Pat Garrett. If a leader had been present, Garrett and his two officers would have received the same fate they dealt Billy.”

@@benscott8747 because it's more than likely they killed one of the Mexican Sidekicks that were at the ranch. And being that Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid were fairly close friends. They have only ever found two photographs of the man and the one is from quite a distance away.
Yeah he actually killed billy the Kidder who was a notorious prankster with an unfortunate name. The real billy the kid lived next door and after hearing gunshots ran away.
I do too, Pat Garrett was never known for his honesty.

Respectfully, my research showed that when Billy was a "kid," of 12 years, a man called his mother a bad name, so he shot the man. That was the first time he killed someone. From a thick book about American Outlaws, from the SF Public Library.

His step-fathers last name was McCarty. Billy’s last name was Bonney. His mom remarried.
Billy was likely born in Coffeyville KS when it was still a territory. His step dad found out Billy’s mom had TB and skipped out on her to AZ, leaving her, Billy, and brother Robert alone in Silver City area of NM territory. She worked as a cook and washer woman.

It was rough back then in the depression days!! People died early back then and lived in horrible living conditions...
Very interesting. Thanks for making this available.

Gangsters, and examples of how they evolve. Heres a 1800's example.
An All American story.

So cops have been the worst liars for a long time. Figure's,today two people you can't trust their word are cop's an crack heads
@@Jj-gi2uv Some things never change like the rich man always getting away with corruption and the little guy always struggling to get by in this life and because of it, his life becomes a mess that he did not intend to make, all the while trying to better himself. Such as the the story of this poor kid. The rich will always live comfortably in greed and the poor will always pay the price for the rich mans greed.
Thanks choppy
You are very much correct. One thing bothers me, though. In order for Garrett to collect the reward money, he had to get hold of a person of authority that could verify the identity of the man that Garrett claimed to be Billy. That person arrived, not bringing a photographer which seem strange considering that lesser outlaws had their pictures taken after their demise in a shootout or the like. The given description did not fit Billy at all. The body was of an older man with a full beard, and wrong color of eyes. These facts I had from a book I read at a library back in the late 1980s. Unfortunately I do not recall the name of the book or the author.
Billy The Kid is what we call a REAL BADMAN!!!
Naw, bad circumstances. He was a Loyal friend
A lot of people who met Billy also had a very tragic life.
Awesome! I am Billy The Kid!!!🎻
Since there are pictures of billy and brushy Bill Roberts.. Why hasn't someone done an aging computer composite to compare what Billy would look like when aged
Irish ☘️ sister here !!!!
How tf they not showing clips of “Young Guns”
Best films ever!
Governor Wallace went on to author Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
In the Old West days, they used to take numerous photos of the dead outlaws, there are none of Billy the Kid.
Make a video on Wyatt Earp
There is so much of this that is not fully explained. Where did you get your information from?
Nice information about Billy the kid, but I'm pretty sure people didn't shoot revolvers two hand grip like in this video.
Where are all these movie clips from?
Wild horses live here in Lincoln County to this day, which I've got to imagine has to do with all the horse thieving going on back in the day.
I'm a big fan of his. Don't know why but I've been an admirer for a while.
Why?
His whole existence is not real at all.
Just a campfire tale made up by some old rotten horse riding hobo who entertained others by telling made up stories for a can of pork and beans 🤣😄
@@teddee4572 Are you mockingly laughing at me? Suddenly I get that sense. I had just begun to like you now; don't be mean. I think your probably a great guy, "now". Your funny and I like you. Don't ruin that.:-)
I'm from Lincoln county New Mexico! Billy's Real name was William H Bonney, And the jail he escaped from by finding gun was not Santa Fe. it was in The old Lincoln Jail. I've been there many times you can still see the bullet holes in the wall.
William H Bonney was not his real name it was one of his aliases named after a friend of his I think, could also be just random, he also went under Kid Antrim and eventually Billy the kid, his real name was Henry McCarthy. Using different Aliases was very common in the wild west.
his mother remarried when she Moved to Silver City New Mexico And the kid Took his stepfather's last name which was Bonnie.
@@ivxxtrouble9187 His legal real name was Henry McCarthy, William H bonnie was a aliase of his. His step father was William Antrim.

I need to come check that out
After seeing a few Billy the Kid movies lately, it made me want to learn more about him. Seeing documentaries on TH-cam about the outlaw, I found them fascinating and finding out about a museum in Texas which I’d like to visit someday. What the name of the movie or tv show that appears at 6:54?
One of the documentaries on TH-cam was all things Billy
A little family secret is that Billy had gotten my grandfather's aunt (Peter Maxwell's sister) pregnant and Peter Maxwell helped trap Billy. Peter's sister was then wed to a man from Mexico asap! An out of wedlock child was a very bad thing at that time. It could ruin the family hopes of the mother and child. My aunt told me the story when I was old enough to hear it.
Yeah yeah good made up story though
@@teddee4572 Why is that so hard to believe?
I don't remember the name of the Maxwell lady, but I do remember seeing a picture of her son, who was a dead ringer for Billy. It was obvious he was a mix of Mexican and white. I haven't heard of that as being debunked. Anyone else seen the pic?
@@teddee4572 Telesfor Jaramillo was the son of Paulita and Jose Jaramillo. In Young Guns 2, Billy was asking Pat if Paulita was asking for him. Plus didn't Paulita give it up before Pat shot 'em?
@@ford0073 come on you watch a movie and get all excited and afterward think you're a genius because you got something to talk about 🤣😄
Hollywood just makes things up.
Honestly though, no one knows exactly what happened back then except the people there.
All the books people read and movies people watch are mostly made up stories that are inaccurate to sell to make money.
Who's the old photo of in the thumbnail, and why didn't it appear in the video?
That was a really nice shot against Chisum, that greedy bastard was killing & stealing everything he could in cold blood. Billy the kid died an old man in Southern New Mexico, and even told who he was before he died.
After 4-5 commercials at the 8:00 mark...I tuned out.

An old man that was called "Brushy Bill" admitted he was Billy the Kid. Despite being identified by numerous people that personally knew Billy he was summarily dismissed. People prefer the legend over the truth.
So true.. Ur statement reminds of the line by Jimmy Stewart at the end of the movie The Man who shot Liberty Violence.
It's about as credible as people in the 1980s claiming to be Elvis. ''Brushy bill'' would have been around 3 years old when Billy the kid was active according to his family bible, which was provided by his niece.
Documents can easily be forged by government entities, like the FBI and John Roche, Thomas Kennedy.
