I have 2 sisters, the oldest has crocheted for years and years. I brought my crochet to a family party. My second sister acted shocked and made fun of how I hold my needle. It made me feel like crap. My older sister said “ hey lots of people do things differently and it’s ok”. To this day, I have not forgotten the way my sister made me feel about how I hold my needle. Thank you for not being insistent about things. I refer all new crocheters to your tutorials, they are clear, friendly and you make them easy to understand. Love you!!
Hold your hook the way that is comfortable for you. Nothing I hate more than those that try to tell others how to hold their hook, yarn, or project while crocheting. My sister and I crochet together a lot. We both create beautiful projects. I crochet tight and she crochets very loose. I have taught her things and she has taught me many things.
For the longest time I thought I was holding my hook and crocheting wrong. None of the tutorials I watched had anyone holding and crocheting the way I did. Then one day I found a TH-camr who held the yarn with her thumb instead of her pointer finger, and felt justified. If your projects come out as planned, it doesn’t matter how you get there.
One of the things i love most about you Crystal.. you don’t force “your ways” on anyone. I love that you show us how you do things, or what yarn/hook you use.. but ALWAYS tell us to use any yarn.. do the magic circle or chain 4 and slip stitch to form a ring 😊. You teach in a way that everyone can relate and gain from your knowledge.. so thank you!!!!

My mom taught me the chain method years ago and that’s all I will use. Crystal you do you and the ones who don’t like it don’t have to watch your wonderful tutorials. When my mom got sick and passed away at the age of 47 I lost interest in crocheting until I found you so thank you so much for all you do and teach all of us ❤
So sorry you lost your mom at such a young age. Mine passed away at 67, but that still seems like way too young. I still miss her every day. I'm glad Crystal's videos and crocheting are helping you cope. I call crocheting my therapy all the time. 💕

Hi Crystal I don't comment as much as I should but felt I had to in this instance. It never ceases to amaze me that there are people who try to foist their opinions on others and unless they agree they are wrong. I was taught to knit, sew and crochet by my Mum from the age of five and do exactly the way you do. As I am in Manchester UK I could very well say all who use the US terminology (which as you know is different to the UK ie your single crochet is our double crochet) is wrong. Hell no...like you say there are no rights or wrongs as long as the result is the same and you're happy with it. I'm 68 yo and have been doing my crafts for years and I've never seen anyone do the "foundation" row so to me seeing something new is fascinating so thank you! I only discovered the "continental" way of knitting recently...tried it and failed so I stick to the way I was taught. Heaven forbid me telling the Europeans..."hey you are knitting the wrong way"! @@jansmith2846Very curious in which way we knit different: UK versus European way. I'm from The Netherlands so greetings from across a very tiny pond: North Sea. Oh my personal way of knitting was a very strange way and not exactly European I think (don't know how we're supposed do it). I just do it as I was taught in the family way: 1 needle stiff underneath left arm pit and the other arm my needle in hand moving with my whole arm to yarn over with all kind of stitches. Meanwhile having the yarn in left hand for the tendion required. I cannot fo fancy ways of how to wiggle yarn through my fingers and just use those as I've seen many knitters do. But I was fast and my projects were neat. I had to give up when I dislocated my shoulder which never really healed. So nowadays I learn to crochet and actually it's much more fun. Especially now I start to realize that I don't need to master foundation single crochet rows but can stick with a simple chain or back bump chain for some stuff. I'm a newbie to Crystal's channel (once saw a market tote bag I desperately wanted to make but I'm busy on a very big blanket right now). And found out there's over 2000 video's to explore!!! YEAH!!! That's gonna be fun!! You're English but your name suggests Dutch roots btw.
@Lafayette19P hi 👋 the English way I was taught is very different from the continental method I've seen where the left hand holds the yarn for the tension, and the right hand scoops the yarn to carry the stitch. In the method I use the left needle is merely to hold the stitches to be worked and my right needle and hand works the stitch from the yarn held in the right hand which wraps the yarn round both needles to work the stitch...hope that makes sense ☺️. TH-cam channel @Nimbleneedles uses the continental way and Norman is excellent and @Sheila's Knitting Tips and Other Stuff uses the English way. I love to crochet too so I split my time between family, work, Knitting, crochet and my allotment. Interesting to hear I may have Dutch roots as I did a DNA match on the Ancestry site and apparently although mainly English the results also showed a 27% Netherlands and 16% German connection 🤷♀️. Fascinating if I could find out more info 😀 I'm starting a crocheted blanket too once I finish my current knitted project. X
Now I understand the differences between all methods. So many times people tell me, You have to do it this way, now I have a comeback. Well done Crystal, I have learnt so much from you.
I used chains with stitches worked into them for many years. Now, I use foundation stitches whenever possible to have a nice stretch (I don’t have a problem with it being too tight). Took a while to “get it,” but now I love it. It works well for measure-as-you-go wearables. If not, I work into the back bump of the chain. I like having the beginning of the work look like the end and a nice edge to work into if I do edging.
I get a much looser edge using a foundation row and you get the chain and first row of the pattern done at once. It's a much nicer looking edge too. Then your start and ending edge of your project looks the same. Easier to put a border on too.
I totally respect you for learning the foundation stitch and trying it long enough to decide that it wasn't for you. That's called making an informed, adult decision. Plus the fact that you don't bash it or look crossed eyed at anyone else for using it is awesome. 👏 💐 Bravo girl!
Ohhhhh. What an awesome tutorial !!!!! Most definitely helpful. It's funny. I seriously could not figure out how to crochet for the life of me, but I absolutely love to sew. I mean, I create my own patterns even. Then it hit me. Lol. Crocheting is like cutting out a pattern, I just have to create the fabric first !!!! Crystal is the most COMFORTING person to learn from. Her videos exude a sense of PEACE, even when she’s describing something she doesn’t like. It’s hard to explain. I love her personality so much, I’ll actually play her videos for HOURS while I’m crocheting, because it’s sort of like having a crochet buddy to crochet with. And of all the crochet TH-camrs out there, Crystal is the REAL DEAL. She’s the most down to earth, laidback, *peace inducing* person to listen to. And I personally find her voice very comforting as well. ❤ I also LOVE that she shares her opinions and views, and then explains them, because that’s actually a necessary part of understanding the pros and cons of different methods and learning how to have the FREEDOM to choose the ones that are most comfortable to *us* without worrying what others think. I’ve crocheted for years and years and years 😂. Hey everybody, you do you, hold your hook the way you want, hold your yarn the way you want etc etc etc whatever is most comfortable for you and don’t get discouraged if you’re new…keep trying till you get it right. I was 9 when my grandma taught me the basics …. I’m 62 now …. back when we didn’t have internet I went to libraries to learn with books …. and still learning new things to this day ❤🎉😊

I knitted all of my life until I couldn't anymore after a dislocated shoulder which never healed properly. And in the strange way I knitted I needed to move my whole arm each stitch from the shoulder. But I never mastered the "right" way so now I started crocheting!!! Which is way more fun anyway and I had no idea there was so much that you can crochet: even clothing. Came across your channel looking for simple market bags. LOVE the idea of a plastic canvas bottom though I wonder will that stay okay in the washer? Guess we don't have it in Europe anyway but can recreate from those sturdy reusable shopping bags we have over here. And than discovered you had over 2000 video's I can pick and learn from!!!!❤🎉🎉🎉 Currently working on a huge Dutch design bed spread but the patches are all different patterns so you need to make it neat with 26 stitches each side to join. Sometimes a patch/pattern is 16 rows long and 33 broad. So I spend as much time on the patch as on the single crochet around it. Which is boring because the under and upper side go fine. I decrease by using 2 front loops only. Its' an invisible decrease I've been told. But at least (thanks to your bag tutorial) I now know where tot close the row!!!! Not in the loop that gives the height to a row... AND I also saw you using that same stich to put your first single crochet in!!! Which will make my totally different project easier, because it always messed up the single count from te row sorrounding the patch. And another thing I picked up just from 1 video: I don't need to work too TIGHT!!! Imo you work extremely loose but in the end the finished product looks perfectly. While mine, working very "neatly" got opposite results: too tight, too small and too stiff!!! With knitting it worked well but with crocheting it doesn't. And it's so soothing to hear you talk!!! Most American videos I need 0.75 speed to understand or voices are too high pitched for me (I have brain damage since 5 years). And I know: everybody talks in their own way but I feel blessed that I found your channel. You talk in a nice no nonsense way too, which also helpes me because I have perfectionisme problems and crafts should be fun, not cramped up and tight as a drum working on it. I talk way too much. I'm sorry for that but the language is difficult for me and I feel so enthusiastic!!! And luckily I don't need those fancy foundation single crochet "things" meanwhile I found out that a much looser chain and sometimes working in the back bumps will do fine for me too. Because I tried and I found it very difficult (ofcourse also from working too tight) but luckily they are not a necessity for end results. Thank you in advance for all you put up there for me to discover and learn from you. After seeing the 5 bag tutorial for 2.5 hours I know I will. I can crochet 2 hours a day tops. Then I get too exhausted but with your video's I can relax from that and gain knowledge!!!🥰

I wish people would stop telling others what to do. I use all the methods you showed depending on what I'm making. I've been told I hold the hook wrong and the yarn wrong both when crocheting and knitting. I don't care. In the past I have knitted some beautiful jumpers with designs of animals and now that crochet is my passion I'm learning everything I can about it. The way you teach, show, explain everything is so clear and without judgement. Carry on being yourself. Many thanks for all your videos.

Hi Crystal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this issue. I, too, don’t like change, lol. When I learned as a child in the 60’s, which to me is “old school”😊, we were taught to go under both loops in the chain. I never knew there were any other options until years later. I’ve learned all the other techniques and I decide which to use mostly based on the designer and how they are showing us to do it. That’s what works for me personally. You are so right in saying that we should do what works best for us as individuals. Thanks again!❤️

I’m the opposite, I have to do my starting chain with a hook a size larger because mine is so tight. Foundation stitch fixes that for me and it’s easier to count my stitches. But like you said do what’s best for you. 😊
Foundation stitches changed my life! I love the versatility that comes with them. That doesn't mean I never use foundation chains. But when feasible, I almost always use foundation stitches. I like having the starting and ending edges be more similar. Even if you chain loosely, that starting edge won't stretch like all the rest of the piece. Try a scarf worked sideways, where you chain the length. I don't care how loosely you chain, it won't look even. One side will stretch and the other won't. The ideal is to use the best technique for the project. For certain things, having no stretch at the beginning might be very useful. For other projects, it is imbalanced. Use the technique that you prefer, sure, but I say it is even better to use the best technique for the project you are working.
Me too! I have problems with a foundation chain being too tight and I’m not sure why. I just discovered foundation stitches and I’m having more success. To each their own. 😊

I don't feel so bad now. I've changed and work back into it my entire life, but now have hand tremors and it makes it difficult. Tried to learn the foundation chain but just couldn't. It takes me longer to work into my original chain now with trimmers, but I still like that method the best. Thank you for explaining why you have your preference. Makes perfect sense to me
Foundation single crochet has always seemed extremely tedious to me. So I’m very glad you don’t go anywhere near it, Crystal! I have never tried to do the single crochet Foundation row and I don't think I would like to do it but thank you again for showing me how to do it I prefer to do the chain because like you said it's just the way I learned. I've always wondered why you didn't do it. But then you crochet more evenly than anyone else I have ever watched and I figured you didn't need to. I have tried it many many times unsuccessfully, trying to even out my stitches. One day I will get there.
I don't think most people use foundation stitches to keep that row even (though that could certainly be another reason). The biggest reasons I see it used are: - for stretch, in a garment, since foundation stitches have more stretch than chains. - and when you don't know exactly how wide or how many stitches you'll need. Working foundation stitches let you measure as you go since measuring based on a chain is less accurate than on foundation stitches.
😂 I’m 52 and you totally nailed it. My daughter asked if we were twins separated at birth. I said, “Yep, separated by thirty years, two different sets of parents and oh, a thousand miles.”
I learned the chain method over 50 years ago and it’s what is most comfortable for me. Same with the magic ring. I think I’ve finally mastered it but just don’t like it at all. Was so happy when you did the video on making a circle and keeping it tight. Thanks for all the great learning tutorials.
I have wondered why you didn't use the Foundation Stitches.... Thanks for sharing. I've tried doing FDC, SDC, etc... and it always just looks so wonky - I'm sure I'm doing it wrong...but every time, I get frustrated with it and just go back and chain and then do first row. So.... I can totally relate to this video. You've taught me so much over the years (Started watching you in 2014!!) So thank you. Love your channel and all that you do!
Neat! I vary whether or not I use the chain or the foundation stich method depending on what the patern I'm using recomends. Of course since almost everything Ive worked on in the last 6 months has started in the round i had to recalabrate between chain 4 or magic circle.😅 You're completely right crochet is about finding the techniques that work for you. So long as your project comes out the way you want it to, how you start or hold your hood or join new yarn doesn't matter.

I'm always wondering about the loop or loops to yarn through, or the hacks/ tips, and zoom in on your videos to make sure I'm following your way because what you say and how you teach it, makes it more easier for me to follow. What is claimed as tips/ hacks, only made me confused when I'm halfway and realising that I still don't catch the grasp of it and replaying it a million times still makes my stitch wrong. I am still twining yarns around my forefinger on the other hand when crocheting, the old ways I seen my cousins do it more than 40 years ago. It works for me than holding the strand between 2 fingers, only for my stitches to be absolutely loose and the yarn slipping off constantly. I've learned a lot from your tutorials and hands down to this day, you are the best teacher ever. Thank you.
I completely agree with everything uou said, I learned to start with my foundation chain, and 90% of the time I use mu top loop, UNLESS, I'm working on the "back bump" for a neater edge. Love your videos as always, appreciate you and your time love! ❤😊

I say that is what I like to use and was only curious why you don't use it. The main reason I like using that stitch is with the chain it is harder for me to crochet the first row. I make mine looser on the foundation row, but that's just me. Thank you for answering my question. You explained it very well.

Finally!😅 Crystal said what I felt I was too inexperienced to say. It has been a year since I learned how to crochet by watching Crystal’s expert and down to earth tutorials. When I started til see the foundation type of crochet, I felt it was presented as somehow superior to the chain method. I thought why? I agree 1000% with how this subject was presented. Do what works for you, because who cares? Relieving tension and creating should be simple, NOT more stressful and unnecessarily over-complicated.

i crochet really tight, knife grip, use inlines susan bates, do the chainless foundation. yeah i prefer to crochet that way personally. always have.. i want crochet to be least holey as possible hahaha we are all different. you are so amazing with your crochet

me too, but I use a size larger hook to make the chain, then switch down a hook size to go into the "bumps".... keeps it from being to tight when I go back with a bordet
Yes, when I use chains, I always use the back bump because it gives such a nice edge that matches the top edge. But it is definitely tighter than other ways that use chains so you do need to keep it loose.

I’ve watched many crochet channels here on TH-cam and they all teach differently. Some are great!! And some are just highly confusing. This is why I watch Bag of day the most. Crystal is very easy to follow along with and easy to understand.

I like to do the back bump method as most of my projects don't need a border and I like the clean look of the edge. I always wondered about going into the one loop or 2, so thanks for the close up!
I'm completely the opposite. I have to go up a hook size if I do a chain to start, can use the same size hook on the foundation stitch. Also find the foundation stitch and the back hump in the chain easier to do borders with. Also think they look better. It's funny how we can have such different experiences. 😂

I go into that back bump when I make my first row. I didn’t know that method makes the work tighter. Good to know. The single crochet foundation stitch was giving me problems when I was trying to follow other tutorials. I got it when you did it. Now you’ve taught me multiple ways to start a project. Knowing how to use different methods is knowledge that you can use or not, it's a choice you get to make for your personal preference. Every one works differently and what's comfortable for me probably wouldn't be a choice for you. No harm, no foul! I've watched a hundred "crochet hacks" videos and I've used several of these methods...but I've rejected many more! It all comes down to personal preference! As they say..."You do you!" I like that you teach while offering different methods to the one you choose. There is not right or wrong here on your channel! Yay Crystal! ❤

Thank you, Crystal! I'm like you, I don't like change and I have been knitting and crocheting for over 75 years. Recently I decided to try a new single crochet foundation and found that it was confusing to follow and just took too much time to learn for what end? I will say that your demonstration is much clearer than two others I watched. For me, it seems to be three times the work for no real benefit. I'll stick with my old, familiar style which has worked for me for a very long time with no problems. (I still live by the KISS method!)
So nice to hear you validate the fact that it's perfectly acceptable (who says anyone has to follow "rules" in being creative) to learn and use different ways to get to the desired results.... Good on you Crystal!
Your chaining is so perfect and even that you dont need to use that foundation chainless system that is a bit easier for people who are hopeless chain makers like me. I wish i could get a pretty even chain like yours. I stuff it up badly and then when trying to crochet back into it it just looks even worse. But just like so much of the rest of life we are all best to do what works for us if it gets the outcome we need.
Thank you for sharing the different ways you enter the chain to make your first row of stitches. This made me think of the way you hold your hooks … I am a self taught crocheter, and hold my hook exactly the way you do. I was in my 20’s, and I would see other people holding the hook as if they were holding a writing utensil. No matter how often I tried to learn this way of holding the hook, I always went back t9 the way I initially learned, and have not looked back. “As long as the outcome is the same” - never truer words ❤❤

I tried a foundation row both ways, it's easier for me to do a chain then a single crochet in each chain, it makes the row lay flat without being so tight, it's my preferred way. Whatever is best for each individual is what they should use. Same way holding the crochet hook, I prefer the knife method, some use the pencil method. Each person use whatever they're comfortable with. Thank you for your tutorials. 😊 they're easy for me to follow along, I watch them everyday. You're a great teacher. My favorite thing about crochet is how many different ways a project can be made and still have the same outcome. That this craft has so many preference methods is amazing to me and is what makes it fun for me. Such as different ways to hold the hook, different ways to start a project that either starts with chains or the magic ring, and how patterns can be modified in small ways to allow comfort while working, etc. Crochet is such a versatile craft, which is the main reason why I love it so much.
I always love to hear your opinions and reasons for why you do things a certain way way. I agree to each their own is the right way. I, personally, prefer the foundation chain because when I do just the chain I feel I get a twisted chain no matter what I do. I agree about switching hook sizes on projects…too confusing. I find counting my chains easier when I do the foundation method. However, I only use it when the first row will be all the same stitch. Thank you for taking the time to help us understand different methods available and how they look. 😊
I use the chain method. I need simple and easy when I crochet. Thank you for showing all the different ways, as for some, it will work. But, for others, it won't. I like how you encourage us to do what works best for us. You are the best!
I just had this conversation with my sister-in-law about the foundation chain. I prefer the same way you do it, with the chain and all the explanation as to why!! It‘s so interesting how we all have different experiences with different techniques 😲 guess that’s why it’s so important to always make a gauge swatch 🙈 Like, for me, I usually have to go up a size when I‘m using a starting chain, and for the foundation sts I keep the same size hook - so just the opposite of you! I personally use different starting methods for different types of projects (and sometimes based on my tension that day, lol). There is also the „Crochet Long Tail Foundation Base Chain & Perfect Crochet I-Cord“, which is a completely different way of starting a project. 😃 I love using that method for making cords, too.

I have 2 sisters, the oldest has crocheted for years and years. I brought my crochet to a family party. My second sister acted shocked and made fun of how I hold my needle. It made me feel like crap. My older sister said “ hey lots of people do things differently and it’s ok”. To this day, I have not forgotten the way my sister made me feel about how I hold my needle. Thank you for not being insistent about things. I refer all new crocheters to your tutorials, they are clear, friendly and you make them easy to understand. Love you!!

Hold your hook the way that is comfortable for you. Nothing I hate more than those that try to tell others how to hold their hook, yarn, or project while crocheting. My sister and I crochet together a lot. We both create beautiful projects. I crochet tight and she crochets very loose. I have taught her things and she has taught me many things.
For the longest time I thought I was holding my hook and crocheting wrong. None of the tutorials I watched had anyone holding and crocheting the way I did. Then one day I found a TH-camr who held the yarn with her thumb instead of her pointer finger, and felt justified. If your projects come out as planned, it doesn’t matter how you get there.

My mom taught me the chain method years ago and that’s all I will use. Crystal you do you and the ones who don’t like it don’t have to watch your wonderful tutorials. When my mom got sick and passed away at the age of 47 I lost interest in crocheting until I found you so thank you so much for all you do and teach all of us ❤
So sorry you lost your mom at such a young age. Mine passed away at 67, but that still seems like way too young. I still miss her every day. I'm glad Crystal's videos and crocheting are helping you cope. I call crocheting my therapy all the time. 💕

Hi Crystal I don't comment as much as I should but felt I had to in this instance. It never ceases to amaze me that there are people who try to foist their opinions on others and unless they agree they are wrong. I was taught to knit, sew and crochet by my Mum from the age of five and do exactly the way you do. As I am in Manchester UK I could very well say all who use the US terminology (which as you know is different to the UK ie your single crochet is our double crochet) is wrong. Hell no...like you say there are no rights or wrongs as long as the result is the same and you're happy with it. I'm 68 yo and have been doing my crafts for years and I've never seen anyone do the "foundation" row so to me seeing something new is fascinating so thank you! I only discovered the "continental" way of knitting recently...tried it and failed so I stick to the way I was taught. Heaven forbid me telling the Europeans..."hey you are knitting the wrong way"! Oh my personal way of knitting was a very strange way and not exactly European I think (don't know how we're supposed do it).
I just do it as I was taught in the family way: 1 needle stiff underneath left arm pit and the other arm my needle in hand moving with my whole arm to yarn over with all kind of stitches. Meanwhile having the yarn in left hand for the tendion required.
I cannot fo fancy ways of how to wiggle yarn through my fingers and just use those as I've seen many knitters do.
But I was fast and my projects were neat.
I had to give up when I dislocated my shoulder which never really healed.
So nowadays I learn to crochet and actually it's much more fun. Especially now I start to realize that I don't need to master foundation single crochet rows but can stick with a simple chain or back bump chain for some stuff.
I'm a newbie to Crystal's channel (once saw a market tote bag I desperately wanted to make but I'm busy on a very big blanket right now). And found out there's over 2000 video's to explore!!! YEAH!!! That's gonna be fun!!

@Lafayette19P hi 👋 the English way I was taught is very different from the continental method I've seen where the left hand holds the yarn for the tension, and the right hand scoops the yarn to carry the stitch. In the method I use the left needle is merely to hold the stitches to be worked and my right needle and hand works the stitch from the yarn held in the right hand which wraps the yarn round both needles to work the stitch...hope that makes sense ☺️. TH-cam channel @Nimbleneedles uses the continental way and Norman is excellent and @Sheila's Knitting Tips and Other Stuff uses the English way. I love to crochet too so I split my time between family, work, Knitting, crochet and my allotment. Interesting to hear I may have Dutch roots as I did a DNA match on the Ancestry site and apparently although mainly English the results also showed a 27% Netherlands and 16% German connection 🤷♀️. Fascinating if I could find out more info 😀 I'm starting a crocheted blanket too once I finish my current knitted project. X
Now I understand the differences between all methods. So many times people tell me, You have to do it this way, now I have a comeback. Well done Crystal, I have learnt so much from you.
I used chains with stitches worked into them for many years. Now, I use foundation stitches whenever possible to have a nice stretch (I don’t have a problem with it being too tight). Took a while to “get it,” but now I love it. It works well for measure-as-you-go wearables. If not, I work into the back bump of the chain. I like having the beginning of the work look like the end and a nice edge to work into if I do edging.
I get a much looser edge using a foundation row and you get the chain and first row of the pattern done at once. It's a much nicer looking edge too. Then your start and ending edge of your project looks the same. Easier to put a border on too.
I've found it's stretchier than the chain way too.

Crystal is the most COMFORTING person to learn from. Her videos exude a sense of PEACE, even when she’s describing something she doesn’t like. It’s hard to explain. I love her personality so much, I’ll actually play her videos for HOURS while I’m crocheting, because it’s sort of like having a crochet buddy to crochet with. And of all the crochet TH-camrs out there, Crystal is the REAL DEAL. She’s the most down to earth, laidback, *peace inducing* person to listen to. And I personally find her voice very comforting as well. ❤
I also LOVE that she shares her opinions and views, and then explains them, because that’s actually a necessary part of understanding the pros and cons of different methods and learning how to have the FREEDOM to choose the ones that are most comfortable to *us* without worrying what others think.

I’ve crocheted for years and years and years 😂. Hey everybody, you do you, hold your hook the way you want, hold your yarn the way you want etc etc etc whatever is most comfortable for you and don’t get discouraged if you’re new…keep trying till you get it right. I was 9 when my grandma taught me the basics …. I’m 62 now …. back when we didn’t have internet I went to libraries to learn with books …. and still learning new things to this day ❤🎉😊

Which is way more fun anyway and I had no idea there was so much that you can crochet: even clothing.
Came across your channel looking for simple market bags. LOVE the idea of a plastic canvas bottom though I wonder will that stay okay in the washer? Guess we don't have it in Europe anyway but can recreate from those sturdy reusable shopping bags we have over here.
And than discovered you had over 2000 video's I can pick and learn from!!!!❤🎉🎉🎉 Currently working on a huge Dutch design bed spread but the patches are all different patterns so you need to make it neat with 26 stitches each side to join. Sometimes a patch/pattern is 16 rows long and 33 broad. So I spend as much time on the patch as on the single crochet around it. Which is boring because the under and upper side go fine. I decrease by using 2 front loops only. Its' an invisible decrease I've been told.
But at least (thanks to your bag tutorial) I now know where tot close the row!!!! Not in the loop that gives the height to a row... AND I also saw you using that same stich to put your first single crochet in!!! Which will make my totally different project easier, because it always messed up the single count from te row sorrounding the patch.
And another thing I picked up just from 1 video: I don't need to work too TIGHT!!! Imo you work extremely loose but in the end the finished product looks perfectly. While mine, working very "neatly" got opposite results: too tight, too small and too stiff!!!
With knitting it worked well but with crocheting it doesn't.
And it's so soothing to hear you talk!!! Most American videos I need 0.75 speed to understand or voices are too high pitched for me (I have brain damage since 5 years).
And I know: everybody talks in their own way but I feel blessed that I found your channel. You talk in a nice no nonsense way too, which also helpes me because I have perfectionisme problems and crafts should be fun, not cramped up and tight as a drum working on it.
I talk way too much. I'm sorry for that but the language is difficult for me and I feel so enthusiastic!!! And luckily I don't need those fancy foundation single crochet "things" meanwhile I found out that a much looser chain and sometimes working in the back bumps will do fine for me too. Because I tried and I found it very difficult (ofcourse also from working too tight) but luckily they are not a necessity for end results. Thank you in advance for all you put up there for me to discover and learn from you. After seeing the 5 bag tutorial for 2.5 hours I know I will. I can crochet 2 hours a day tops. Then I get too exhausted but with your video's I can relax from that and gain knowledge!!!🥰

I wish people would stop telling others what to do. I use all the methods you showed depending on what I'm making. I've been told I hold the hook wrong and the yarn wrong both when crocheting and knitting. I don't care. In the past I have knitted some beautiful jumpers with designs of animals and now that crochet is my passion I'm learning everything I can about it. Hi Crystal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this issue. I, too, don’t like change, lol. When I learned as a child in the 60’s, which to me is “old school”😊, we were taught to go under both loops in the chain. I never knew there were any other options until years later. I’ve learned all the other techniques and I decide which to use mostly based on the designer and how they are showing us to do it. That’s what works for me personally. You are so right in saying that we should do what works best for us as individuals. Thanks again!❤️

I’m the opposite, I have to do my starting chain with a hook a size larger because mine is so tight. Foundation stitch fixes that for me and it’s easier to count my stitches. But like you said do what’s best for you. 😊
Foundation stitches changed my life! I love the versatility that comes with them. That doesn't mean I never use foundation chains. But when feasible, I almost always use foundation stitches.
I like having the starting and ending edges be more similar. Even if you chain loosely, that starting edge won't stretch like all the rest of the piece.
Try a scarf worked sideways, where you chain the length. I don't care how loosely you chain, it won't look even. One side will stretch and the other won't.
The ideal is to use the best technique for the project. For certain things, having no stretch at the beginning might be very useful. For other projects, it is imbalanced.
Use the technique that you prefer, sure, but I say it is even better to use the best technique for the project you are working.
I've never done foundation stitches, but I have the same problem. My foundation chain is always too tight. Will have to try it out :)

I don't feel so bad now. I've changed and work back into it my entire life, but now have hand tremors and it makes it difficult. Tried to learn the foundation chain but just couldn't. It takes me longer to work into my original chain now with trimmers, but I still like that method the best. Thank you for explaining why you have your preference. Makes perfect sense to me

I've always wondered why you didn't do it. But then you crochet more evenly than anyone else I have ever watched and I figured you didn't need to. I have tried it many many times unsuccessfully, trying to even out my stitches. One day I will get there.
I don't think most people use foundation stitches to keep that row even (though that could certainly be another reason). The biggest reasons I see it used are:
- for stretch, in a garment, since foundation stitches have more stretch than chains.
- and when you don't know exactly how wide or how many stitches you'll need. Working foundation stitches let you measure as you go since measuring based on a chain is less accurate than on foundation stitches.

I learned the chain method over 50 years ago and it’s what is most comfortable for me. Same with the magic ring. I think I’ve finally mastered it but just don’t like it at all. Was so happy when you did the video on making a circle and keeping it tight. Thanks for all the great learning tutorials.

I've tried doing FDC, SDC, etc... and it always just looks so wonky - I'm sure I'm doing it wrong...but every time, I get frustrated with it and just go back and chain and then do first row. So.... Neat! I vary whether or not I use the chain or the foundation stich method depending on what the patern I'm using recomends. Of course since almost everything Ive worked on in the last 6 months has started in the round i had to recalabrate between chain 4 or magic circle.😅
You're completely right crochet is about finding the techniques that work for you. So long as your project comes out the way you want it to, how you start or hold your hood or join new yarn doesn't matter.

I'm always wondering about the loop or loops to yarn through, or the hacks/ tips, and zoom in on your videos to make sure I'm following your way because what you say and how you teach it, makes it more easier for me to follow. What is claimed as tips/ hacks, only made me confused when I'm halfway and realising that I still don't catch the grasp of it and replaying it a million times still makes my stitch wrong. I am still twining yarns around my forefinger on the other hand when crocheting, the old ways I seen my cousins do it more than 40 years ago. It works for me than holding the strand between 2 fingers, only for my stitches to be absolutely loose and the yarn slipping off constantly. I've learned a lot from your tutorials and hands down to this day, you are the best teacher ever. Thank you.
I completely agree with everything uou said, I learned to start with my foundation chain, and 90% of the time I use mu top loop, UNLESS, I'm working on the "back bump" for a neater edge. Love your videos as always, appreciate you and your time love! ❤😊

I say that is what I like to use and was only curious why you don't use it. The main reason I like using that stitch is with the chain it is harder for me to crochet the first row. Finally!😅 Crystal said what I felt I was too inexperienced to say. It has been a year since I learned how to crochet by watching Crystal’s expert and down to earth tutorials. When I started til see the foundation type of crochet, I felt it was presented as somehow superior to the chain method. I thought why? I agree 1000% with how this subject was presented. Do what works for you, because who cares? Relieving tension and creating should be simple, NOT more stressful and unnecessarily over-complicated.

My grandmother also showed me chain method only, and she was the master crochet lady. The rest I am learning from you, you don't use your tutorials to prove something, you make it so clear and easy that I could crochet cardigan! 😅 Thank you and please keep a good work.
i crochet really tight, knife grip, use inlines susan bates, do the chainless foundation. yeah i prefer to crochet that way personally. always have.. i want crochet to be least holey as possible hahaha we are all different. you are so amazing with your crochet

I do the chain method but I do the stitch in the bump. It leaves a nice edge.

me too, but I use a size larger hook to make the chain, then switch down a hook size to go into the "bumps".... keeps it from being to tight when I go back with a bordet
Yes, when I use chains, I always use the back bump because it gives such a nice edge that matches the top edge.
But it is definitely tighter than other ways that use chains so you do need to keep it loose.

I’ve watched many crochet channels here on TH-cam and they all teach differently. Some are great!! And some are just highly confusing. This is why I watch Bag of day the most. Crystal is very easy to follow along with and easy to understand.

I like to do the back bump method as most of my projects don't need a border and I like the clean look of the edge. I always wondered about going into the one loop or 2, so thanks for the close up!
I'm completely the opposite. I have to go up a hook size if I do a chain to start, can use the same size hook on the foundation stitch. Also find the foundation stitch and the back hump in the chain easier to do borders with. Also think they look better. It's funny how we can have such different experiences. 😂

I go into that back bump when I make my first row. I didn’t know that method makes the work tighter. Good to know. The single crochet foundation stitch was giving me problems when I was trying to follow other tutorials. I got it when you did it. Now you’ve taught me multiple ways to start a project. Knowing how to use different methods is knowledge that you can use or not, it's a choice you get to make for your personal preference. Every one works differently and what's comfortable for me probably wouldn't be a choice for you. No harm, no foul! I've watched a hundred "crochet hacks" videos and I've used several of these methods...but I've rejected many more!
It all comes down to personal preference! As they say..."You do you!"

Hey Crystal and others. First I love they way Crystal explains stitches and all other things about her channel. I abhor (more than hate) crocheting into chain stitches! I do really like all of the foundation stitches. Even more than all that what makes me the most happy is the way we can all make crocheting our very own. Much love and really big hugs!

Thank you, Crystal! I'm like you, I don't like change and I have been knitting and crocheting for over 75 years. Recently I decided to try a new single crochet foundation and found that it was confusing to follow and just took too much time to learn for what end? I will say that your demonstration is much clearer than two others I watched. For me, it seems to be three times the work for no real benefit. I'll stick with my old, familiar style which has worked for me for a very long time with no problems. (I still live by the KISS method!)
So nice to hear you validate the fact that it's perfectly acceptable (who says anyone has to follow "rules" in being creative) to learn and use different ways to get to the desired results.... Good on you Crystal!
Your chaining is so perfect and even that you dont need to use that foundation chainless system that is a bit easier for people who are hopeless chain makers like me. I wish i could get a pretty even chain like yours. I stuff it up badly and then when trying to crochet back into it it just looks even worse. But just like so much of the rest of life we are all best to do what works for us if it gets the outcome we need.

This made me think of the way you hold your hooks … I am a self taught crocheter, and hold my hook exactly the way you do. I was in my 20’s, and I would see other people holding the hook as if they were holding a writing utensil.
No matter how often I tried to learn this way of holding the hook, I always went back t9 the way I initially learned, and have not looked back. “As long as the outcome is the same” - never truer words ❤❤
You do you, I agree. I learned by my aunt when I was a young girl the same way you learned. I tried a foundation row both ways, it's easier for me to do a chain then a single crochet in each chain, it makes the row lay flat without being so tight, it's my preferred way. Whatever is best for each individual is what they should use. Same way holding the crochet hook, I prefer the knife method, some use the pencil method. Each person use whatever they're comfortable with. Thank you for your tutorials. 😊 they're easy for me to follow along, I watch them everyday. You're a great teacher. My favorite thing about crochet is how many different ways a project can be made and still have the same outcome. That this craft has so many preference methods is amazing to me and is what makes it fun for me. Such as different ways to hold the hook, different ways to start a project that either starts with chains or the magic ring, and how patterns can be modified in small ways to allow comfort while working, etc. Crochet is such a versatile craft, which is the main reason why I love it so much.
I always love to hear your opinions and reasons for why you do things a certain way way. I agree to each their own is the right way. I, personally, prefer the foundation chain because when I do just the chain I feel I get a twisted chain no matter what I do. I agree about switching hook sizes on projects…too confusing. I find counting my chains easier when I do the foundation method. However, I only use it when the first row will be all the same stitch. Thank you for taking the time to help us understand different methods available and how they look. 😊
I use the chain method. I need simple and easy when I crochet. Thank you for showing all the different ways, as for some, it will work. But, for others, it won't. I like how you encourage us to do what works best for us. You are the best!
I just had this conversation with my sister-in-law about the foundation chain. I prefer the same way you do it, with the chain and all the explanation as to why!! It‘s so interesting how we all have different experiences with different techniques 😲 guess that’s why it’s so important to always make a gauge swatch 🙈 Like, for me, I usually have to go up a size when I‘m using a starting chain, and for the foundation sts I keep the same size hook - so just the opposite of you! I personally use different starting methods for different types of projects (and sometimes based on my tension that day, lol). There is also the „Crochet Long Tail Foundation Base Chain & Perfect Crochet I-Cord“, which is a completely different way of starting a project. 😃 I love using that method for making cords, too.
