I like the Federated Suns for giving their citizens some decent rights (in theory, anyway) and fighting against the degradation of the Inner Sphere's knowledge base. Honorable mention goes to the Taurian Concordat for their legendary level of resistance toward any invaders (a certain Mr. Checkers refers to this mindset as "Hippity-Hoppity, Get Off My Property").

Yeah also Battletech is a bit more fan oriented and the current owners of the franchise can’t really mess with it too bad because vintage is a strong fallback and there is just too much lore and play history built up. Wiz kids tried and flopped miserably with Heroclix. At that point everyone just went back to vintage minis and rules and the Heroclix saga ended for the good of all! Also the current owners are doing a good job to polish up and modernize the vintage books and rules which had many flaws, while holding on to the traditions and lore.

One of my favorite parts of the BattleTech universe is every faction has their up- and down-sides. Everyone can find something they jive with and it all comes with a pinch of questionable decisions. It’s wonderful.
Even good ole Steiner has its defects, with less than desireable tactics at times. Though personally I consider these desireable tactics when a standard scout lance is involved. (Aka 4 Atlasses)

I love House Davion, I had all of the old House Sourcebooks and I have had the newer ones.
Davion were always meant to be "Muricah Free" good guys, or as close as they can be in the pseudo feudal system they operate under

I seem to like makeshift nature of House Liao, making mechs and vehicles out of what they had:
-Vindicator: A decent trooper mech for the era and my personal favorite battlemech.
-Raven: A solid 35-ton striker.
-Cataphract: An Interesting Frankenmech. For the 1X I would rather have the PPC in the torso rather than the AC10, but the PPC arm was from a Marauder so there.
-Po Tank: My Favorite combat vehicle, simple loadout [1 AC10, 2 MG, 10.5 tons of armor for a 60 ton tank], and cheaper than other tanks in its weight class.
I love this tank like Tex loves the Urbie.
Edit: I forgot my unit is the 2nd MAC, so that would be metallic blue a one color trim of my choice for the camospec.
I think you misunderstand that Tex doesn't like the urbie. It's an overblown meme, and it serves a niche that is VERY situational.
Tex respects the Humble Urbanmech. Especially on GARBAGE DAY.
Always had a soft spot for the Big MAC myself. For a merc company they did better for themselves than most and pretty much made themselves indispensible to the Capellan military.
"Safe-keeper of the original art" This is even more important as all art now is being produced digitally and there are no physical originals.

I last played Battletech in person at GenCon a couple years ago. But I actually got an original sketch of my spider being blown out of the sky by the artist that works with Catalyst. Mind you I was way overmatched and it was 1v1 at that point.
I never really abided by mech selection or paint schemes but as far as lore goes I've always been a Drac... which probably annoys my wife due to Japanese connotations (she is 1/4 chinese and her grandfather fought against them as they invaded). But to save my credibility as a Drac, I do have two Wolf Traps painted up named Fire and Ice. (not an homage to Game of Thrones) but the barrel of their Autocannon is painted to reflect that. Much like you, I prefer 3025 (or 3029) but at the time I couldn't avoid the shift to ~3050+. I wish I had all the house books but I think I only have the one for Kurita. Mind you at least I have the original Tech readouts for most of the years (including the 'unseen') Battletech takes up almost an entire bookshelf including my mechs (which I think I calculated at one point was at least a regiment.) I love the universe.
Addition: I also kicked an opposing players head off before taking an AC/20 to the head myself. At least it wasn't a campaign... I saved my score card with illustrations of said death.

The Free Worlds League (House Marik) is a mess. It is a collection of minor Houses who fight amongst each other more often than they fight with outsiders. Marik is the strongest of these but as the most prominent has to contend with all of them. You can find almost any world you can imagine in the League. Brutal authoritarian worlds and libertarian utopias with everything in between. Everything could fall apart in at any time and shifts in power are common.
Truly, they are the Telvanni of the Inner Sphere.
@@cptncutleg The biggest out-of-lore problem for the FWL is probably that there weren't really very many books written where they were in any way featured as a major player. It was either "Yay, go Davion/Steiner/Davion-or-Steiner-affiliated-merc-company" or "See how weird and interesting these new clan people are?" in most novels. Liao and Kurita at least got some spotlight time as antagonists (and the Draconis Combine even got a bit of hero time once the clans invaded), but the FWL was sorta off on the sidelines away from all the major action for the most part.
So... America?
My personal choice is ComStar.
Headquartered on Terra. Access to more Star League tech than most anyone else. Controls communication across the Inner Sphere. Created and controls the value of Inner Sphere finances through the C-Bill.

Alternative option: if you wanna mix Inner Sphere and Clan tech, or just like cyan/turquoise, there's Rasalhauge. They don't exist in 3025 (during which they're a semi-autonomous district of the Draconis Combine) and they get overrun during the Clan Invasion, but Clan Ghost Bear, who conquered them, goes native and forms the Ghost Bear Dominion, later the Rasalhauge Dominion.
You can also look at making a merc company because they basically use whatever they can get their hands on, although some companies are heavily associated with certain mechs; or example, the Kell Hounds are commonly associated with the Wolfhound, the Gray Death Legion with the Marauder, the Wolf's Dragoons with the Annihilator and Marauder II, the Northwind Highlanders with, obviously, the Highlander, and the Eridani Light Horse had a bunch of custom mech variants commissioned for their own use usually sacrificing armor and/or firepower for improved mobility).
As for me, when I started getting inner sphere stuff, I kinda split the difference with a merc company that's basically a Marik black ops unit in all but name (though their true allegiance is to ComStar).
Back in Mechwarrior 2 days I played in an online league where I was part of the “RFR”, (instead of FRR but the same thing). I drove a Timber Wolf that had twin LRM10 and a uac20 for up close. There was some kind of a league rule that limited LRMs or I’d have used larger packs but they were trying to stop people from going all Missile boat…..
I remember when I finally completed my House sourcebook collection. Paid a pretty penny for them all.

I do not know how I stumbled on your channel but I am glad I did. Having said that I have been collecting since the mid 80's and was an Intern at FASA in the 90's, I have in my possession nearly EVERY once of Duane's original CBT pieces. I also have in my possession 2 of each original Parthas that were cast in pewter. My prize possession and centerpiece to my collection are 2 original uber-rare sealed blister pack #41 and #42 of the 250 casting run INFOCOM branded Crescent-Hawk emblemed Phoenix Hawk MKII's, that could only be obtained if players found a specific easter-egg hidden in the original Crescent Hawks inception video game. Because of those two pieces Jordan himself SWEARS to this day that I posses the most complete, extensive and comprehensive CBT collection known to exist in the world. I would love to see more detail of the artwork that you posses, as I and many others were convinced that none of the original's existed outside of my collection. I have NEVER offered up any of my collection for sale, so I am genuinely curious as to the details on how you were able to procure such rare pieces, they are BEAUTIFUL and Im Jelly AF. I think its AWESOME that you have them and are keeping them safe, because they are TREASURES....

@@edwardclay7551 The only photos of my complete collection are kept by my insurance company. However certain parts of my collection can be seen publicly at GENCON as I am a regular exhibitor there. I currently do not offer private viewings of my collection outside of personal friends and certain vetted individuals involved in CBT production and or media.

I just got into mw5(videogame) and I'm both amazed at the lore and surprised I didn't know this was a tabletop originally. Those original pictures are very cool.
Yeah the video games came out slightly after the original tabletop, circa late 80’s for crescent hawks inception and mechwarrior the OG. I think MW 1 was the worlds first pc based polygonal graphics game, but not sure. I certainly remember it as a “wow, 3D graphics…I didn’t think that was possible with home computers” type thing. Some of the early video game lore made it into the tabletop game lore. Nowadays that’s considered a sin and it’s not canon when it’s a video game. In fact my “Mechit lube” videos are a reference to the repair station in crescent hawks inception.
From my understanding too is that MechWarrior as an IP name only exist because Microsoft got the video games rights to Battletech but could not actually call it Battletech. But now MechWarrior 5 with adding melee as a game mechanic means that it feels much closer to Battletech.

Davion has a short a (as in "bad"). As you mentioned, it's of French origin. D'avion ("Of Avion", a region in France"). It's not pronounced as in "day".

Lyran Commonwealth (House Steiner) is a merchant plutocracy. Money can buy you rank, social status and anything else. The industry of House Steiner is in fact the former worlds of the Rim Worlds Republic (far from the front lines) which the Commonwealth absorbed after the Amaris Civil War. They are famous for their "Social Generals" who have rank because their families bought it for them. No matter how skilled you are the only way to advance yourself in the Commonwealth is with money.

Draconis Combine since I bought the 2nd edition boxed set in the mid-80's. Why? Early teenager me thought their insignia was the coolest one. It's as good a reason as any. :) And by chance Rasalhague (the Scandinavian part of the Inner Sphere) was a part of the Combine back then, so as a Norwegian that was a happy coincidence as well. And no, I will never approve of Rasalhague eventually giving in and joining the dirty clanners even if the Ghost Bears are better than most dirty clanners, so I remain Draconis Combine for life.
In Mechwarrior 2 when you could play online by modem link I was in a tournament where we basically played as Rasalhague. Our symbol was RFR and the guy who was head of our “clan” was almost unbeatable. We used JJ to dodge and basically did LRM boats until we got close then went uAC20.
LMFAO, we can NEVER be friends.......Because the only good Drac is a DEAD Drac.... LMFAO can you guess where my loyalties lay........

The Draconis Combine (House Kurita) wants to make everyone cosplay as medieval Japan. Social mobility is restricted to those who can pass as Japanese.
Not really though. Japanese ancestry is not a requirement in the DC. Adherence to the Kurita version of Japanese culture and bushido is far more necessary, no matter your ethnicity, so taking a Japanese name is probably common for many families of various ethnicities. For example a prominent mechwarrior named Minobu Tetsuhara was actually of African descent. His forefather had changed his name from Jackson Hayes when he hundreds of years earlier had sworn allegiance to Coordinator Miyogi Kurita.
Other prominent DC characters without Japanese blood are Duke Hassid Ricol, a powerful noble and the antagonist in the first Grey Death Legion book. Then there's general Vasily Cherenkov, noi very Japanese sounding, who was one of the most powerful men in the DC during his time as he was in charge of an entire Military District. And the man in charge of their secret police, the ISF, was Subhash Indrahar, not very Japanese either by ethnicity.
Oddly, Kuritans were despised on Terra by the former Japanese areas

The Federated Suns (House Davion) was a heavily agrarian society with a weak government, where citizens had a lot of rights and freedoms, prior to the Succession Wars. Now the Federated Suns is the most brutal military dictatorship in the Inner Sphere. All rights and freedoms have been suspended indefinitely. Factories that produced agricultural equipment have been converted to producing military goods. Working conditions on industrialized worlds are dreadful. The Federated Suns has the most prestigious military school, but no public schools, few private schools, and so you are far more likely to be illiterate if you grew up in the Federated Suns than anywhere outside of a bandit kingdom. The gap between the ruling elite and everyone else is massive. Almost half of the Federated Suns settled worlds are barely developed lacking electricity and running water while being ruled by nobles from fortress estates. Due to fighting the Combine on one side and the Confederation on the other racism (frequently expressed violently) against anyone who appears Asian is a major problem. Also it's worth noting that insanity in the Davion family is extremely common.
So why do I favor the Federated Suns? The need to overcome their military shortcomings has made them a military meritocracy. A gifted commoner can expect to rise to the rank of general and be granted noble title. No where else is there greater social mobility.
Well there was always Free Rashalhague republic... and well then Ghostbear Dominion and then Rashalhague dominion... society that is as close to Star League era as humanely possible.

Always liked Mechwarrior, even though I never touched any Battletech until the Battletech turn-based PC game came out, so this is still new knowledge to me.
@@spcjohnson805 Well its the same thing like in W40k... in a sense ALL great houses holdings are somewhat autocratic, but the general impossition on planetary systems differs quite a lot.
discounting capellans, even some Draconis combine words offer certain version of democracy, and there are planets under tight leash under Davions, Steiners...
Capellans are technically democratic but the space communism to actually get vote.
quite frankly by 3150s the most democratic state existing is Rashalhague dominion... which is amalgamation of Clan Ghost Bear and former Free Rashalhague Republic.
(also the generalization essentialy only worked for the Republic because it was SMALL)
Rashalhague Dominion to my knowledge is the sole entity in 3150s that mandates UNIVERSAL suffrage regarless of your birth status on all territories it holds in terms of "civic" matters.
the military is still run by Clan system where essentialy the only thing that happened was amalgamation of warrior and scientist caste into one.
(meaning now those who design battlemech and warships and aerospace assets even SERVE on those, making new designes quite deadly...)
So its two entities that run in parallel as most sucesfull compromise in inner sphere.
(like any time Draconis combine or Lyrans try something stupid they get smasshed to smithereens by the Dominion (and its largest fleet in known universe)
Rule of thumb is that if someone VOTES on something its planetary matters. Voting organized for lets say FEDERATED SUNS - would be question of tallying TRILLIONS (populace of most planets is quite low) from thousand of words. (most having a small outpost)
quite frankly you can not possibly run an intestellar state like that. It would be too sluggish (even with HPGs at its prime and not messed up by Comstar) to really do anything if voting was done.
So the best you can hope for, with an interstellar "empire" like that is an enlighted monarch.
And well... if you figure out a perfect wedding present - like Hanse Davion - you simply marry the best princess in the galaxy.

Did you know that the 1:285 scale for Battletech is the official NATO miniatures scale for commanders who want to model out tactics with little minis? Not sure if that’s just some military school/officer training thing or if it’s actually done in the field through….in other words I wonder if they play GHQ or even Battletech at West Point as coursework lol!

Taurian FTW. Masters of telling Anyone and Everyone to go back to minding their own business. Always felt it was a shame they didn't get ANY mention from 3039 onwards, and personally don't take anything past 3067 as canon. They would have had a great opportunity to have expanded into another great house on the other side of the invasion zone.

In the Inner Sphere there is the right way to do things, the wrong way to do things and the Steiner Way...which is usually the wrong way but its done with Assault Mechs.
And that makes it miiiighty fine!

I'm rather new to Battletech, so I assume these books are like the faction codexs in 40k. But where would I find em and what's the proper name to look em up?
the vindicator is a basic liao design as well as the raven.
The Vindy fills the same role to the Crappies as the Phoenix hawk fills for the Lyrans.
Wish the FWL had gotten more love in fiction, I've played Free Worlds Guards since like 1997 and effectively never see them.
Also fun fact: There are no free PPC's for FWL mechs because every one they make is reserved for the only Awesome factory left in the Inner Sphere.

Maximillian Liao didn't use a clone to try and replace Hanse Davion, they took a guy with similar physical characteristics, used drugs and such to essentially wipe his memory and imprint what they knew of Hanse Davion onto him, and used surgery to make him look identical.
Its all in 'The Sword and the Dagger' one of the first Battletech novels (from about 1987). That plot was one of the reasons Hanse declared war on Liao in 3028 - not a revenge factor, but because of what the duplicate represented - Liao's willingness to destroy a persons life like that. Of course, he also wanted their industrial base, so..
I agree not a genetic clone, though it’s still a clone philosophically in terms of someone who for all intents and purposes is Hanse Davion.

@@grayboats7741 Tikonov (with the Confederations largest mech manufacturing facilities) and Grand Base (which had the Confederations second largest battlemech production facilities) had a fair bit of warfare industry - Tikonov ended up being taken by FedSuns but Grand Base didnt. For the longest time I thought Tikonov had been the capital of the Tikonov Free Republic, but it turns out it wasnt, which surprised me.
Also St Ives (which while an independent state, was heavily aligned with the FedSuns) and Texlos, both of which held Hildco Industries facilities. Thats just off the top of my head, a deeper look using the Liao Handbook and Objective Raids sourcebooks would show a heck of a lot more pretty easily. Go check it out!
I always tend to go for Liao, something about then always appeals to me.
Whats your favourite part of Liao/The Capellan Confederation? The whole governmental scheme reminds me of Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon....And the Warrior Houses are like the factions (Hawkmen, Arboria, etc)

The idea of service to the state appeals to me, the culture of the Cappies is interesting. I also love the underdog and the Cappies are always the guys getting beaten to make the fedrats look good.
The mic of regular, merc and warrior house units is interesting and the death commandos are really cool.
@@davidscoltock3970 I've seen the movie many times (I consider it a classic, though somehow unliked by many who just don't get it) but not read the book. Someone told me the main difference they didn't like about the movie vs the book was the portrayal of the power armor (or lack thereof) and more nuclear small arms which I'm willing to overlook, so I wasn't so motivated to go for the book. Can't think of any Davion unit that uses Yellow. Crucis lancers use drab green, the guard use blue with red and white striping, Kestrel grenadiers use black with blue and white lighting and the Avalon Hussars use grey, most others use green or tan.

It was simple for me. When I started I was into Japanese history so it was house kurita. But later I found my true love I am Jade falcon.
That was my path as well except I was Steiner. I’m still Steiner and Jade Falcon at the same time. Whenever Steiner fights Jade Falcon I’m ok with either side winning, but when Wolf fights Kurita I seem to be indifferent or I wish both sides lose or something. It’s strange.
It's worth noting that the Marik shortage of PPCs serves a specific purpose: Making sure the greatest assault 'mech in the Inner Sphere always has guns. Every PPC taken from a Marik variant of another 'mech is placed into the chassis of an Awesome, where it can do the will of Marik across the worlds of the Inner Sphere.
And the Steiner segment is a lie and an outrage. The Lyran Commonwealth not only builds and uses light 'mechs, it has built two of the greatest light 'mechs to ever see battle.
And the signature 'mech of House Liao is the Vindicator, bar none. Followed by the Cataphract and Raven.
I paint my mechs in camo pattern so i can more or less use them with any faction for the most part. Only a few are in specific faction colours.
That’s good, do you split your mechs into two different camo patterns or all generic?
@@miikkakangas6750 it's all forest/cadpat style to match the majority of my maps, which are grassland/forest/alpine type.
ALSO. Want to know the secret to speed painting camo? get yourself a fresh pack of 12 wood pencils with eraser ends, then use your hobby knife to cut blob shape into to the eraser, and use it to 'stamp' camo shapes on stuff, kind a like a Japanese personal seal for documents. works on 28/32mm scale as well for stuff like bolt action or konflikt 47 or what have you. just use a forest green or mid tone brown as a colored primer. Or make them square grid shaped to do a modern digipat style.

I got into battletech as a kid due to the jade phoenix novels I found in a charity shop. It wasn't until years later when I found the mechwarrior games I realised the clans are supposed to be the baddies!

Rasalhague was great until the clan invasion! For RP I’d go Jade Falcon, but I had to live IRL I’d go Steiner.
I am more for the Star League Defense Force. I like the idea of putting law and order in the inner sphere and keeping the great houses in line.

I mainly play the Roguetech mod for Battletech. I usually just play as house hunting pirates. Prop up the local governments unless a main house offers too much money to pass up.
If I go green, I go Clan Jade Falcon, because who wants to be a Capellan? Another option would be St. Ives Compact post 4th succession war, because not even Capellans want to be Capellans.
If I am playing succession wars though, I tend to go Fed Suns, Hanse Davion is undisputably the most magnificent bastard in the setting.

you have good ideas. i like to play BT with strict rules but loose background. i try to aim for the 3060's and take any unit. just have a good story why that clanner defected and joined your lance of urbanmechs from the periphery.
I’ve got the opposite policy, I’ll go a little loose on rules, mixing bits from the various generations of rules (vintage 80’s plus latest total warfare etc) but super strict on era. If the mech variant came out in 3030, it’s not allowed. (Too futuristic)
In fact I just realized I’ve been trying to play the closest to vintage rules that’s possible, except the vintage rules are broken in several places like the hatchet on the hatchet man didn’t have rules for it when it came out etc. Also there were no LRM infantry etc. So it’s like I’m trying to make up nonexistent mystical vintage rules by filling in the gaps from modern rules....
i like that. my problem is i have a history of running games with players who argue every rule. so i set the rules and thats how the universe works. how do you deal with players who want to make the rules custom to their advantage?
One can use an “arbiter” die. You roll 1d6, or use a 1d20 or a 1d100 to be more dramatic if you have one in your collection, and have it come out “their way” if the roll is 1-33, “your way” if it’s 34-66, and some halfway thing if it’s out of that range. These rules apply to this one game only. Then once that die decides, those are the rules for this game.
thats smart and i have tried that, but i had a player who would role 2 10 siders as percent dice and then tell me just as the dice stops rolling which dice is the high dice....oh.....i am in the Palm Springs area of California. I welcome all BT players if you are ever out here.

These are the original 1980’s house source books for Battletech. You can find them on eBay if you search for “vintage Battletech source” but not always, they are becoming rare. Right now you can still get them but think of them as silver coins as a hedge against inflation.
But why be a Spheroid when you can make sure that they are off your lawn and property? Giddy up and make sure those LBX AC/10s are primed and ready! Concordat needs you!

For me it’s the novels. Every now and then I read a new one and I’m suddenly a Liao fan for a bit…. But I always go back to Steiner. (And Jade Falcon)
Uuuhm.... Marik isn't at *all* like a nobility or royalty in their overall structure. They're a republic, with an overall head of state. That head of state has abused a sort of 'war foot/martial law' sort of thing to stay in power for ages, so its maybe easy to think of them as kings or lords, but they arent. Heck, the Captain-General can be voted out, from what I recall.
And mercs working for the Free Worlds League mainly have to worry about internal politics, coups and rebellions than the overall government getingh 'angry' at them. They also pay pretty well.

It was at an old gamers estate sale. I was like “holy crap is that what I think it is?” I have the opposing page too with the battle scene.
Oh and other people there were looking for other stuff (jewelry etc) and just thought it was some scrap sketch and didn’t pay attention to it.
I have a death commando lance painted by MasterGunz as well as another battalion of Liao Mechs. I love the Cataphract and Lao Hu.
