So true!!! Im puertorrican also and grew with Mazinger and Robot festival(Festival de los robots).
Mazinger Z was the first anime I ever saw. It was shown along with Space Captain Harlock and Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman) It started my addiction before it became manga and anime became the phenomenon they are now. He holds a special place in my heart. Glad he's getting some much love and recognition.

Those are all shows that seem to have a big cultural footprint in France!
Luckily in Latin America we got the whote Mazinger Z series dubbed in spanish and uncut, since with few exceptions like Voltron, Saber Rider, Robotech to name a few that came from the US dubbed or adaptations, most anime we got in Latin America at that time (late 70's through the 80's and early 90's) came straight from Japan getting dubbed in Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, and aired either uncut or nearly uncut from its original version.
In cuba we also loved voltus v.

Here in Italy "Mazinga Z" and "Il grande Mazinga" (how we call them) are a huge part of many people childhood. While is something like dragonball, if you ask someone who Mazinga is, they will probably at the very least watched and episode or 2.
In the same vein "Goldrake" is even bigger, since for at least 2 generations it was watched by kids and teens alike.
Sadly it's not gaining fans, for the simple reason there are no new series, even if the movie was a great nostalgia trip for many.
Finally! An english version of this type of video, I've been looking to explain to my English speaking friends about mazinger z!

I do love how originally it was supposed to be a motorcycle but get switched to the Pilder. Then in “Mazinger Edition Z” they decided to make the Pilder’s controls work similar to a motorcycle which is pretty clever imo
Toward the end of Edition Z, Energer Z and its motorcycle/pilder are introduced as a Mazinger precursor !
The original Mazinger Z anime was good, goofy fun. I couldn't get into Great Mazinger or Grendizer as much though. Mazinkaiser and Shin Mazinger were fun and Infinity was a nice nostalgic ending to the original anime.
Yep, in Europe, Goldorak is incredibly loved. Last year, a French studio even made a video game.
Funny enough, Goldorak's TV rights were sold to France without Go Nagas's consent. He discovered this at the end of the 70th when on vacation in France and watching TV.
Gen X'er here who grew up on these in the early 80's. I may give Infinity a look. Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger were also remastered properly on Blu ray (and available in Spain with subtitles). Grendizer though remains untouched, which makes me wonder if Toei lost the source material. The theatrical shorts got 4K screenings this month in Japan.
I'd love for Diskotek to get their hands on "Getter Robo", "Getter Robo G", and "Grendizer." Still waiting on that...

I found Mazinger Z when looking for a Gundam manga in my local library. I didn't find a single mecha manga (besides Attack On Titan 😜), but right before I left one of the workers called out to me with Mazinger Z Vol. 1 in hand. It was my first old school super robot and a super fun read, the book even had an interview with the author in the back that gave a lot of insight on his creative decisions.

I have an idea for a mazinger anime, its called neo mazinger. Neo mazinger is a sequel to mazinger z infinity, here, the cronus Empire, led by king typon, is trying to take over the world. Neo mazinger is piloted by the son of tetsuya and Jun. The material used to make neo mazinger is super alloy neo z, its was created by koji kabuto in a lad accident (sayaka was there too, don't worry they were completely unharmed) afterwards, koji experiments with the materiel and discovers anti photon energy, and with that he alongside with tetsuya created neo mazinger and its partner, Athena x. Neo mazinger has attacks are from what you expect, a rocket punch called neo punch, a heat attack, called breast magma, a version of the photon beam called anti photon beam (its blue in color instead of yellow) the sword called the neo blade, and like great mazinger, it has a built in scrander called the neo scrander, and it can detach the big V on its chest like great mazinger and throw it and it comes back, its called neo boomerang, from its sink on its face (like all mazingers) it can use the rust storm, like great mazinger, it can use the neo break, an attack like the thunder break. Athena x is piloted by Lisa, the daughter of koji and is made of the same materials, but I don't have any ideas for the mecha. The cronus Empire is made up the descendents of the mycenae empire, and like the Empire, it has the superhuman army, the Ariel army, the mammalian army, the aquatic army, the insect army, the reptile army, and the spectral army. Does any one have ideas?

But we had the luck to have grendizer, it's the most famous robot for us, and it open France to all japanese manga and animes
Mazinger Z the Impact is still my favorite even to this day, and that Big Bang Punch transformation is just amazing to look at plus Koji's VA there did amazing job for the voice
This was my childhood and for so many other people as well.
It took me a while to realize The greatness of giant robots. I started with gundam and never thought I'd like super robot, that is until i saw mazinger z now ive watch/read many great super robot stories that i never would've before. Mazinger, getter robo, the brave series, and so much more.
I was in awe when i first saw the giant "Kurogane no Shiro" on TV when I was a kid, something that most people forget to mention is the INCREDIBLE sound design of Mazinger Anime, that gave so much sense of scale to the show, the stomp, the crashes, the machine parts tearing, even today amazes me how much work was put into it. Also has a terrified tone to it, in mazigner world if you are a normal citizen ANYTHIGN can stomp you and you must be ready to let your loved ones go, I think was one of the first Series that I watched that really shows the concept of Dead as a permanent scar, on everyone s life, heck even his grandpa dies right there on first episode, no BS like censorship or " oh, don't worry he is on hospital"..., or stupid stuff like US cartoons like GiJoe or others, people Die when war happens, is a fact and that is why Life is valuable.

I saw the series in Spanish in Puerto Rico i been living in L.A since 1987 i have an extensive collection of Mazinger Z toys and figures ,I just got a tattoo on my forearm of Mazinger Z and kogi kabuto as a Lil kid its supposed to be my grandson whos 8 years old knows about Mazinger since he was 3 due to a toy my son whos 36 now has and my grandson started playing with it and fell in love with the robot, he has alnost every figure i have my kids grew up with Mazinger z , they are 37, 36 and 25 we are all Mazinger Z fans love you video thank you.
My parents are the reason I love anime. Mazinger Z, Saint Seiya, and OG Dragon ball are the first animes I watched because of them. They were huge hits in Latin America and are a big part of my childhood.
Mazinger Z: Infinity was GREAT! (and it's hinted that the Dr. Hell in the movie is not the Dr. Hell Koji defeated, no! It's a Dr. Hell from an alternate world where he and his minions won!)
Mazinger Z is F'ing Awesome! My brother had a shogun warrior the mazinger one i played with that mazinger toy till a house fire burned all of my toys. I miss that toy.😢

06:20 Goldorack was the French name as far as I know. It's called Goldrake in Italy.
It's Goldorak, no c. And you are right, Goldorak was very popular in French country (especially in France, Belgium and the province of Québec, Canada) To a point that he make the first page of the Paris match. His success is due to the amazing translation that was more superior then the English one, creating word from latin origin for the weapon instead of just stating the obvious (Hand beam, seriously!?!?!) French translation have also gone in a more mature direction rather then a childish one with help to make it as an intemporal success.
Mazinger Z was my introduction to anime since it was the first one I ever had seen, at the tender age of 4.
I really liked this video but I would like to add one correction.
Tranzor Z didn't dub the first 65 episodes only but rather skipped around episodes (even merging episodes together) to deal with censoring episodes that were too violent for US television.
The Tranzor dub ends on Episode 91, editing out the cliffhanger foreshadowing the series finale and in turn Great Mazinger and effectively ending with Dr. Hell (or Dr. Demon as the dub called him) defeated and our heroes victorious.
Also while not an error per se, there was two additional English dubs for Mazinger Z and Grendizer that are now mostly lost. Both were made in The Philippines and whereas the Mazinger dub was made to continue where the Hawaiian English dub left off (only dubbing up to the Minerva X episode), the Grendizer episode dubbed up to Episode 17 before the Marcos Ferdinand regime banned all Japanese sci fi media in 1979. Of the dubbed episodes, only 3 or 4 of the dubbed Grendizer episodes and all 8 of the Pinoy English Mazinger dub episodes survive iirc.
Also Mazinger USA predates Mazin Saga, so really the comment on the similar designs are the other way around.
Other than something as pedantic as that, I think this video is spot on.
My favorite robots from the Mazinger franchise, besides the original Z and Great, are Mazinger USA, Minerva X Siren Mode from Mazinger Angels, Z Mazinger, and my all-time favorite, the original Mazinkaiser! I actually managed to snag both volumes of ADV Films' release of the original Mazinkaiser OVA off eBay last year and it's still my definitive Mazinger anime because of it's beautiful musical score, kickass theme songs, and the incredible animation that goes above and beyond to capture the look of Go Nagai's classic Mazinger mangas from the 70s! That said, I also loved Mazinger Z: Infinity. It was a nice loveletter to the classic Mazinger stories and conveyed a message of a bright and hopeful future for humanity. Mazinkaiser SKL is just a damn-good time start to finish! And I LOVE the battle theme "The Danger Zone" by Japanese heavy metal bad Loudness! Just so BADASS!!!
From my understanding, the original manga and anime are separate canon, so should I watch the anime or read the manga?

@@Kaizer617 yeah I read the manga, and I thought it was fine. I find the stories in it that were adapted to Shin Mazinger Z was better in the adaptation. I really liked the characters quite a bit, but it wasn’t anything special. Great Mazinger manga on the other hand was just way too short to be very good compared to the original. I heard the Oda manga that was adapted from the tv series to be a bit better, so I might check out those versions as well as the 70s anime.

Grandizer/Goldorak got a remastered DVD and bluray release some years ago in France, so yeah unless you're from the right countries, no chance to watch it
re: the shin mazinger Z segment: While we may not know what Shin Great Mazinger Z would be about, we have a few ideas about how it could have played out thanks to (partially) related media released afterward, in addition to Super Robot Wars, with V and X being major contributors to that.
I got into the Super Robot Wars series of video games in 2019. I always liked the mecha genre of anime but I wasn't really familiar with much of its history, and the SRW games finally motivated me to check out some of the classic series featured in it. The original Mariner Z was the first one I checked out, I watched the entire series, and Great Mazinger, and the crossover movies in the span of about a month and have been a big fan of Mazinger and Go Nagai ever since. Love the original anime, the manga, and the various revivals and reimaginings that have happened since. I wish we'd get a sequel to Shin Mazinger though!
My dad introduced me to the first Mazinger Z (dubbed in Spanish) when I was about 9, fell in love immediately and I never really understood any of them but the original so this really helped lmao 😭
Really late commenter here. Honestly, the Mazinger series means a lot to me. My first exposure to the Mazinger Z design was through my Dad's Shogun Warriors he always kept displayed on the stairs as you go up them. Though, my first time seeing ANY Mazinger media was actually *Mazinkaiser SKL*! I have seen a lot of the original series, and I am watching the OG Mazinkaiser, and I've seen Mazinger Z Infinity in theater(which was AWESOME!!! It was like there was too much awesome to comprehend, even on a theater screen!)... SKL is still my favorite. It's more sentimental. I know it doesn't have the greatest characters, and several other series' have better plots... It was the first 'mature' anime I'd ever seen with violence, fighting, and the pilots, Kaido and Magami, actually do mean a lot to me. To a troubled autistic teen going through a gender crisis, seeing two badasses go through a world-ending scenario, and one of them grappling with his own identity and deciding to find his reason for living... It felt eye opening to me, in a weird way.
What I am doesn't matter. I could be fat, rail thin, have short hair or long hair, grow facial hair or be clean shaven... It's what I do with my life that matters, and only I can dictate that. No one else. I make that final decision. "I am Hell", or "I am what I choose to be". I saw that series when I was about 15, and I'm almost 24 now. Still haven't reached that point, but that's ok. I'm still learning, changing, and growing.
Also, SKL is kind of urging me to expand my horizon even more. Managed to get a hold of the manga that takes place before the OVA, but it's untranslated. I'm finally starting to seriously learn Japanese because of it.
For as weird as Go Nagai's series' can be, and even the spin-offs... They mean and say a lot. Devilman had a gay 'protagonist', and a character who's canonically intersex. Devilman Lady had a bisexual protagonist. Mazinger Z has a lot to say about technology and how it can or should be used for good and it's dangers in the wrong hands. Haven't read some of the other series yet, but Cutie Honey was a source of comfort to a friend of mine who was having trouble transitioning from 'male' to 'female'. A lot of Go Nagai's series' are one of the ways my dad can connect with my sister and I. Hell, he likes to freak me out with Violence Jack.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get to meet Go Nagai, but if I ever get to say one sentence to him... It'd honestly be "Thank you so much.".

For an introduction to mazinger z, I had the best experience reading the manga. The Toei anime can be fun sometimes for a monster of the week show from 1972, but it is quite a slog to get through to progress the story, even if you use a skip-list. The 2009 anime can be quite dialogue heavy and for some reason the action didn’t quite hit for the episodes that I watched, but I may still revisit it for another try.
Wow 😮 would pay whatever amount for Whole Collection starting from the early 70’s…. Enjoying all the info 👍🏻

This was probably mentioned before, but Grendizer did receive a vhs and dvd release from Imavision in Quebec. Under Goldorak. Im not sure of it had other languages besides french however

Although I would love to watch the original anime’s, they’re all pretty lengthy so I just watched Shin Mazinger and MAZINKAISER which is amazing. I should definitely read the original manga’s and check out Mazinger Z Infinity though

I’m not sure of the exact lore, but Dr Hell always had ambitions to rule the world. He was fresh out of WW2 and believed that tyrants like Hitler were fools who constantly made mistake after mistake. After gaining a good number of “followers” (his army of goons were all cyborg Frankenstein like creations) and learning about the Mikene, he sought their power for himself. In some iterations of the story, he actually learnt that those whose power he sought to claim were still alive and kicking, so his attempts at gaining photon power was an attempt to prepare for the Empire’s arrival.
Funnily enough, the name of Dr. Hell’s organisation is the Underground Empire
Mazinger Z is the godfather of the super robot genre and Gundam for the real robot genre.
The problem with the Mazinger series is it did not expand further than the original plot, there are a ton of reboots and retellings, sure there is some new story from time to time but still nothing to be compared to the Gundam brand.

mazinger z the manga was one grotesque number. monster attacks would result in people being sliced in half with blood splattering everywhere; the minions of dr. hell were freakish in appearance, resembling animals or machines grafted onto a human body.

I'd recommend reading the original manga for Mazinger Z, which has been translated online, then go ahead and read Great Mazinger, and finally Grendizer. However, if you just want to watch the anime adaptations, start with Shin Mazinger Z, aka Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact.
