Hey its been some time since ive uploaded huh? The reason why is the length and scope of this video, I dont think ill ever make something on this level again for a long time, this is easily one of the greatest things ive ever made on a series and artist I adore, expect a more consistent upload schedule from now on!
There is a small audio overlap glitch at 42:03-42:12 where I left in takes of me going "LIKE THIS SHIRT RIGHT HERE" 3 times lmfao, its not major but if you cant hear what I say clearly in this part cause of this error its "but I gotta give it credit for being one of the few times Getter ever came to the west at all, even in a butchered form. With Getter G concluding in both its manga and TV series both Toei and Ishikawa would say farewell to the Getter Rays for the time being as both the studio and Ishikawa moved onto other projects"
I also messed up a bit on the spoiler skip tag at 29:06, I say its at 29:13 when what I actually meant is 31:53
Thank you so much for watching and im sorry this took so long to come out! Please Enjoy!

Even though I've only finished the first part of the Getter Robo manga, I definitely feel that to some small degree, Ishikawa intended Getter to be demonic from the outset. It's an insanely powerful machine piloted by troubled, crazy ass teens. The kinda stuff Getter rays can do is wild, and keep on feeling ominous alongside the Getter Robo itself. Maybe I'm off-base, but that's how it feels. Badass video man.

I look up to Ken Ishikawa (and subsequently Kentaro Miura) and most likely will for the rest of my life. His art boasts a reflective, and thematic stylings you just can't find in other media let alone manga (that I've experienced) I have a lot of respect for Ishikawa, his works, his life, etc. So it feels good to have such a comprehensive, passionate video to truly represent and tribute his life. The fact you put this altogether with no bias for history or key information is one thing. The fact that the only "bias" you show here being love is what makes this video truly worthwhile. There's a highly constructive sense of direction led by sincerity straight from the soul that I wish was more prevalent with these kinds of video essays. I sat down and watched this whole video in one go. I've always seen clips of Getter Robo Armageddon and had always got me curious and last year I sat down and got through the manga. That was an experience, powered through the main manga in two days and then got through the OVAs. The editing and the passion you bring to this video is on point. Thanks for also diving into his other works for us to check out as welll as diving gently into themes that Ken Ishikawa were also interested in and explored in his works. I'm definitely interested in exploring his other works and how he narrates those storylines as well. Sadly I was very turned off by getter Robo Darkness after my first binge of the series which made me leave out on checking the other stories other artists have made but thanks for putting down a guideline for the others. Would love to see a review on Getter Robo Devolution. I haven't gotten around to that series yet but to hear your thoughts on it in greater detail would be amazing. As someone who considers Getter Robo to be their Favorite Super Robot series(besides Braves) and as a series that means a lot to me, I think you did an absolutely beautiful job with this video.
I would speak my mind on each entry, but I think you absolutely nailed what made each entry really great. New Getter esp as that's probably my favorite Getter anime as well for all the reasons you mentioned, as it really feels like the most ishikawa esc in writing and tone and has a phenomenal song list.
Even as a guy who's a fan of Ishikawa, I really appreciated you went the extra length to mention his other manga as there isn't a whole lot of info of them in English, so I found that pretty informative. Ishikawa's body of work really is a one of a kind that no one else has touched upon. I've only read Majuu sensen which I'm a fan of, but I definitely wanna check out Kyomu Senki and Yakuza Weapon. The Later esp because I'm a fan of Tak Sakaguchi due to being in Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus.
Another thing I really gotta give you credit on unlike every other vid that would talk about getter is actually talking about the Toei shows and recognizing their merits. I will admit I haven't fully seen them yet, but they are as just you said significant in shaping getter's legacy.
The Getter Robo Go anime I actually have seen Raw and more or less feel the same. It feels more like a Toei mech show than anything getter related, which is fine in that regard but even compared to other robot shows at the time, it isn't as strong as stuff like Braves, Eldran, Wataru, and so on. Compared to Toei's other mech shows, I actually found it somewhat similar in feel to Toei's Transformers shows like Super God Master force, Victory, and Zone which is kinda interesting for someone like me. The best thing about it are definitely the designs and music, which has some of the best getter songs out there.
As for Getter arc's anime, I'm very much looking forward to see how it goes and knowing Kawagoe I can see it turning out great. With how Getter Arc never got a proper ending, It'll be interesting to see how Kawagoe will conclude it. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Cyborg 009 and Shotaro Ishinomori, but this isn't the first time Kawagoe has tackled a series with a unfinished final arc. His 2001 cyborg 009 anime covered the infamous God's War arc that was never finished and while it didn't completely wrap it up, he did handle it really well and leaving it on a open ending note. I can see something like that happening with Getter Robo Arc, but we'll have to see until it airs.

    • @CheeseGX_
      @CheeseGX_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Kawagoe's 009 was actually one of the first anime I ever watched next to Yu Yu Hakusho, G Gundam, and Rurouni Kenshin, it definitely helped shape my taste early on, and its part of the reason why I trust Kawagoe and his crew so much in being able to create a slightly more concrete, if still open ending.

Amazing video on Getter Robo and all of Ken Ishikawa's body of work in general.
I saw at least 10 chapters of High translated somewhere last year but I don't know where. As for SRW Cross Omega, you might call it lackluster but that game made the impossible possible. All the crossovers it got from all over the place were just so unexpected in all sorts of ways. Mega Man finally in some sort of SRW game, a Minky Momo crossover that actually points out how close Momo looks to Haman Khan, Obari appearing in the game as himself to give the Poputepipiku girls a mech of their own, Sakura Wars in a SRW game, other one off mechs from shows that don't even have anything to do with mechs being added into the game. It was at least amazing for what it managed to accomplish while it was active.

Thank you so much for this! I was born in '75 so my introduction to Getter Robo was Starvengers on Force Five. Star Dragon (Getter Dragon) will always be my favorite giant robot. I used to build all 3 ships with legos and then build my own versions of each. I rewatched Starvengers over and over. I still catch myself calling each of the main characters by their FF names. It wasn't until years later that I found out what Getter Robo G was and that it was actually part 2 of a larger series. I randomly found the ADV Getter Armageddon DVDs in Bestbuy years later and was just blown away. Since then, I've gone back and snagged any version of all of the anime series I could get my hands on and then upgraded them as they became available on Bluray. I've never been able to get ahold of any of the manga as I didn't know it really existed, but I plan to grab Devolution on your recommendation. I'd love to grab the older stuff as I could never really get into the original anime series very much. I'd love to see if I can get into the manga more. I'm so excited to see Arc. Getter Robo will always be my first Giant Robo love and your documentary made me smile and choke up over and over. I'm so glad to find someone out there that loves these characters even more than I ever did and recognizes that there really is something extra special about the series in every iteration. I hope Arc will be popular enough to get the older stuff re-released in the States. WELL DONE! Thank you!

If other successful toy driven franchises like Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and the like are any indication, there's something specifically about it being toys that occasionally uncorks a creator's primal sense of imagination. I've once heard the process described as like, tapping directly into the part of the brain that once got so much joy from simply spinning yarn using whatever's in the toy box. Makes an isoteric sort of sense why such works stand the test of time, there often a very distinct difference in vibe between something made for a mere paycheck, verses something fueled by enthusiasm.

YO, go call TH-cam, numbers must be wrong.
This should be correctly displaying 6+ million views.
What an incredible balance of factual accounts, fanboyism and sharp editing skills.
I applaud your commitment to Getter lore. Even the title chosen is emotionally accurate.
Setting that little 1% of virtue-signalling aside (which next generation will laugh at),
you have effectively created a piece of history worth to be revisited.
I will be back after the million views threshold to celebrate it.
Thank you very much for the time, effort and passion you've given us here at TH-cam.
I wish you the best. You are solid.

Thank you for putting so much time, effort and passion into this video. I could feel it every second, every minute, and I almost teared up listening to your emotional voice regarding the announcement of the new anime.
Indeed, more people should know about Getter Robo, such a fundamentally important part of the mecha genre but even more than that, an amalgamation of so many concepts that deeply explore and question or very role in the universe, while at the same time being just cool af. As an amateur writer, saying that Getter Robo was one of my biggest and defining influences would be an understatement.
The cliffhanger ending of Arc worked, for me, because I filled it with my imagination and with what the story game me up to that point. Every time I read that final page, in my mind the scene zooms out to the ruined city, then to Earth, then to the whole Galaxy and then time itself, and ends up in complete darkness whit only the lights of Emperor's face are visible. This is the feeling of "prelude to the inevitable" that I personally imagine with such a scene, and the reason why I would be fine with the new anime stopping at that cliffhanger. I believe it still has an enormous value by itself. However, an actual ending, if done correctly, not rushed and written by the people who knew and loved Getter and Ishikawa more than anyone else would be very welcomed. Heck, more than welcomed.
Regardless, I seriously hope for (and wish) the best for this project, I hope it's successful and that it can lead to a full modern adaptation of the previous parts of the manga as well, eventually. It deserves to be successful, and a fully animated Getter Saga (and with an ending, maybe) would be an amazing, precious thing to have. And it would also birth more and better merchandise, and let's be honest we need more cool Getter figures. The Soul of Chogokin Getter Emperor is the first figure I deliberately decided to buy and spend a lot on, and it's absolutely beautiful and I'll never regret it, but the idea of a successful Getter anime birthing many more high quality products is thrilling to say the least.
Quick note: I too found Devolution pretty lacking, particularly in the way it "flips" a good story right at the end. While reading it, I got the impression it tried to change its plot at least two, if not three times, and the end result is just a very confusing mess that's engaging and very appealing in the beginning, it raises the stakes in a significant way and then it just flips constantly, losing focus and making whatever story was there to say in the beginning completely impossible to follow (being a monthly manga with 15 or so pages chapters didn't help at all while it was running). Great designs, soldi start, cool concept, everything thrown in the trash for a weird roundabout Gurren Lagann mock up? That's... not how it works, nor how Getter should be. I'm honestly afraid of re-reading it all in one go now, since I fear it will be so much more annoying to see it deviating so much so quickly in the middle part.
One last remark: THANK YOU for explaining what the hell Darkness is. It was almost impossible to find online and I had no idea what it was or how to get even the smallest piece of info about it. Now I finally know what it is... and I'll be sure to completely avoid it for the rest of my life.
Once again, thank you so much for this video! I'll recommend it to everyone I know until the end of times, it's the absolute perfect and complete retrospective on Ishikawa's work, and a well deserved one.
    Believe in Getter!

Looking at Devolution it feels like it needed half a volume’s worth at minimum of story to expand the last part to explain things and what the world was experiencing before the final battle, that’s probably the weakest part to me because they didn’t give enough time for the fans to understand the world and why it’s like that instead of Shin

That was...Wow. That was fantastic. I blame D180223 for giving me a basic understanding of Getter Robo thanks to his Mecha Talk video on the Emperor, but you've give me so much more information to work with than I ever knew possible. I've yet to actually finish a Getter Robo anime, but I did read Devolution. I don't have any sort of nostalgic tie to the characters, but I can see why you would claim it to be fan service in a way.
But at the same time, my own explanation for what happened is simple: Getter Emperor does what it wants.
I need to reread that manga...And see if they ever came out with a model kit for Getter-1 because DAMN I want that on my shelf!

you know, seeing this much dedication for a series like this, I honestly recommend you trying to tackle Kinnikuman (One of Akira Kamiya’s most iconic roles voicing the MC), one of the most popular series on japan (enough that it has its own national day on any friday 29th of any month) and considered the true creator of “the shonen formula” that most contemporary shonen story use.

Congrats, not only was the video glorious, it did what you hoped it would entail. As a very casual fan whose exposure was Armageddon and a far-away historical look into the series, and enjoyment of the SRW's AMV's involving the Getter Team. Your video got me to check out the manga (which I was barely aware of), and enjoy the true full scope of the Getter Saga. I'll dip into Ishikawa's other work; and honestly, you did Ishikawa a service. For all of us in the West unaware of this man and his impact on the industry, I consider your video a MUCH needed bible read for any aspiring Super Robot enthusiast.

Remember reading the 1970s manga as a kid. I was quite taken back with the graphic violence that was not present on the TV show...you see civilians being gruesomely killed by the various menaces the villains unleashed. The level of gore you will not see in mainstream American comics.

When I came across it, Arc was in the middle of its run, and I was thinking of reading the original manga, having only seen the OVAs and the 2004 anime. So I decided "what the hell, I'll watch it after I read it" and then one thing lead to another, and I ended up reading all of Getter Robo Saga before Arc's finale and watching this along with it. And it was so amazing! It's now one of my favorite manga!

This entire retrospective is just... I don't know if I can find the words to properly articulate all the feelings I felt when watching. All I can say is that this is an amazing retrospective that I bet would teach even old fans of getter new things and I sincerely hope that Getter gets more of a presence in the west one day. the one thing that I can really say is a flaw in the video is the tangent about depictions of black people, it just sort of took me out of this high of emotions and investment I was having in the video at that section

Didn't the purpose of Shin Getter Dragon and the origin of Go in Armageddon get explained? Shin Dragon was made as a weapon of destruction when Saotome was manipulated by the Invaders, but the good side of him also intended Shin Dragon to be humans' trump card against the Invaders, so he made Go to control Shin Dragon. So Go was made from Michiru and Dr.Saotome's DNA.
