Great Boat....my buddy got caught in a tide race off the back of Sherkin Island West Cork was like white Water Rafting as we ploughed down and then up serious white caps....combination of good Skipper and great Boat got us through the Channel....Design is harps back to North East Coast 'Cobble'
Hi, We can get up to 10 knot tides. Bit like a magic carpet!! 45 - 50 miles in a day. ie Lydney - Clevedon and back. I did see a picture of 20 knot tides off Norway recently.
This is a good boat but not for those rough conditions surely as the midsection of the passengers would not stand those reversals in the back and tummy muscles and would give up after an hour of that body punishment.
On 1 September 2012 - 11 boats - 6 Drascombes, 2 Wayfarers, 1 sailing canoe, 1 harbour launch and the LYC safety boat safely sailed/motored from Lydney , Gloucestershire to Gloucester (28 miles) and back (16 miles) to Lydney via Sharpness. This was probably the best most enjoyable trip we have done for a while. I will post the video soon.
It is not the route that the rest of the fleet of some 10 boats took. The channel shown at the end of the video was smooth. The occasion was the Ring Trip - Lydney to Gloucester - we are running another this August. In the defence of the boat shown - he had outboard engine problems which made it more difficult to be in the right place.

In the NE they are called 'Cobles' as in my noble lord (imagine Jimmy Nail sayin' it man), in Yorkshire it's Cobbles, as in stones.

Last trip a couple of weeks ago went very well!
Obviously non-panicked. Generations of training and just how to deal with those waves in the right boat. Seems in control the whole time.

No Ring Trip this year but hope to organise a trip in 2014
The point is to be in (the wide) channel. Come if you wish to - not if not!! This is a popular event and we get returners.

That's true in everything in life. We always have a good turnout though.
