NGOs and family members of the late Diana Dimre Ch Marak have demanded that the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC) conduct a magisterial inquiry into Marak's suicide case, alleging foul play.
On Tuesday, a group of NGOs from Garo Hills, including Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), A'chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO), and Federation of Achik Freedom (FAF), met with East Khasi Hills DC, RM Kurbah, to express their concerns and demand an inquiry.
Diana Dimre Ch Marak, a 24-year-old civil engineering student, was found dead in the girls' hostel at Shillong's Polytechnic Institution on May 6. Over two months have passed since her death, and her family has received little information from the police, leaving them agitated.
Speaking to EastMojo, AC Marak, a family member, said the post-mortem report stated the cause of death as asphyxiation but did not provide details on the pathological report, leaving a section blank. The relative also believes the police have shown a lack of interest in the inquiry. He added that when they asked the Investigating Officer (IO) about the delay, they were told that students and faculty had gone home for holidays.
"We have stated in our complaint that there has been foul play, so the police should have acted quickly, but they are still delaying the inquiry. The cause of death should be ascertained, and a magisterial inquiry should have already been carried out since May 6," the family member said.
FKJGP President of the Garo Hills Zone, Pritam Arengh, said that the family and clan approached them to take up the matter following which the NGOs felt it was their responsibility to help the family find closure.
"They told us about their doubts in what is believed to be a suicide case. The family said they found bruises and marks on their daughter's body. Even the post-mortem report was denied to the family members for over two weeks," said Arengh.
EastMojo also reached out to the East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtnger about the relatives' claims. Nongtnger refuted the claims, stating that the police have been prompt in their inquiry. When asked if it was a suicide case or there was foul play, Nongtnger refused to comment.

It's time for the higher authority to conduct investigation on all schools.i find schools misusing their powers on students, intimidating them, harassing, embarrassing them in front of the whole class which in some cases causes the pupil to take drastic steps or cause anxiety and depression on these young Minds...i suffer from PTSD bcoz I was a victim of school harassment, I understand how it feels to be pressured by the school.

an appeal to withdraw the seats of non APST students from TRIHMS from next year. As this year there was no prior information i.e, we wasn't informed before the conduction of examination so we non APST students prepared so as to clear the cut off of Non APST.

There was no evidence leading to murder and there are so many cooked up claims by the family members 😅
