Why did yall choose to long line troll instead of spider rig?

Mainly just to show different techniques. We’ve done shows spider rigging and wanted something different

I grew up fishing with my grandfather as well. He passed and now I'm solo. I've never been to Weiss Lake though. Maybe one day we can meet up and go. I'm in Alabama as well. :)

Fished Weiss lake for as long as I can remember. This time of year, until spring fish the blown down trees below the dam is very hard to bet.😅

Getting a guide on Weiss Lake can save your boat. There aren't many places that are as easy to loose a lower unit. Several locals disconnect their trim gear so the motor is free to swing. I promised God if He'd get me out of that mudhole I wouldn't bring my boat back and I stayed true to my word. I met a local guide that I really like so we use his boat on Weiss and my Ranger on Chickamauga. I ask if the crappy did the same on Weiss as Chickamauga, he said "I doubt if we catch a fish all day that knows there a concrete wall between us". He turned out to be right.
Back in the 90s we had to make all the equipment you can buy today. There wasn't commercial rod racks so I used 3/4" emt conduit and for a net I used a 12' paint pole with a trout net screwed to the end. We made our dock shooting rods because nobody was doing it. I used a steelhead rod cut to 5'6" to get the tip I wanted with enough action to get the jig way back under the dock. This is a useful tip for long line trolling, get a chain stringer, open all the hooks that would hold the fish. tie a trotline cord to the other end. When a rod hangs up and falls in toss the stringer in a few times and it will hook it. I used a chalk line box to wind the cord on. I could buy the Drift Master rod holders but that was it. Everything else was homemade.

Were you following a creek channel when it looks like you were in the middle of the lake?

Crappie follow the creeks in like a highway then move out looking for shallower water. Our lake is shallow overall but I’ve caught fish spawning in 12-14 feet of water😮 the deep spawns don’t have as high of a survival rate as the ones that spawn shallow.
