Azumas and more
Train Variety on the Newcastle & Carlisle and
Carlisle Station!
21 June 23
Two parts to this one -
First part is along the Newcastle & Carlisle line
Second part is an evening at Carlisle station
Network Rail chose 21st June - the longest day of the year - to undertake Engineering Work on the East Coast Main Line north of Newcastle.
LNER ran Azumas over the Newcastle & Carlisle line and we see some at Brampton, Denton School Crossing, near Gilsland, at Haltwhistle and at Hexham, together with the daily engineer's trains and the regular, frequent passenger trains.
Later, in that evening, I spent a few hours watching the activities at Carlisle Citadel Station.
The freight included three Freightliner intermodals utilising pairs of Class 90s, a Royal Mail train and a Varamis Rail parcels train, the Cement train from Clitheroe and Alcan's tank train from Fort William to North Blyth, operated by GBRf and usually run via the ECML.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

Brilliant video Leslie
Thanks!
That was a well-patronised train Roger Ford was hauling!
I find sometimes the southbounds are better loaded thn the northbounds. No idea where the containers come from sometimes.
Great Footage Leslie ❤
Thanks!
Another cracker les love it when east coast diversions are on😀👍
Thanks - it gives me a good excuse to get out towards Hexham, its a beautiful line.
Very good video
Thanks
Lovely little station with the footbridge and the signal box above the bridge thing. Very good Leslie.
Thanks Tim. It must be one of the last like it.
There is another one at Wylam a few miles further along the track towards Newcastle. I remember another now demolished at Penshaw near Sunderland. There were back in the day a fair few in the North East.@@LeslieGilpinRailways
@@winco68 I thought there might be - its a long time since I've been by train all the way to Newcastle. The North eastern railway was keen on this style of signalbox.
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
Glad you liked
Lovely variety Les, nice to see the 90's were out in force.
Yea three freightliner in a row. Glad you enjoyed
Nice one Les...loving the signal box at Hexham...
Thanks. Hexham box is special
Well - you certainly caught some variety there.
Of all the stations we covered between us I think Brampton has to be the least attractive - and probably the least used too.
Hexham to Battersby - now there's an interesting pairing!
I think you are right regards Brampton. The NER waiting shed is subtly boarded up to leave a windowless waiting room but nothing else is near attractive. Yet it has the history of the original card ticket.
I think Hexham to Battersby is much akin to Carlisle to Chathill.

Greetings from Ireland
Andrew
Thanks!
That was a long day for you, however you captured some great footage. That Swift parcels was a new one to me. Good to see that the water cranes are still in place at Haltwhistle. Semiphores at Hexham and of course the North East gantry signal boxes. Really enjoyed, thank you?.
Glad you enjoyed it. It wasn't planned to be long but how better to spend the evening in Carlisle!
I think that water crane was recommissioned for the 'Return to Steam' runs in 1972(?) and has been used a few times but is not useable now. It has lasted well!!
Good to see the Freightliner 90s in bright colour scheme a lesson to other operators who seem to prefer dull drab blue or green or all white trains. Are you listening DRS,GWR, Northern, Avanti West Coast, and especially Caledonian Sleeper.Brighten your trains up.
Freightliner locos of course carry the livery of their American owners, Genesee and Wyoming - you see it on short lines all over the USA. DRS are in the doldrums but GBRf have used some smart liveries. Avanti and GWR, both First group, have had imagination by passes when it comes to colour.
Was that Tim G I spied boarding a train ? Between the two of you the longest day was sure jam packed. With a great variety of traffic. 😊
Sure was Euan. Paths crossed at Haltwhistle.
There's going to be more divisions midweek by network instead of carrying out the work at weekends, network realised that there are more passengers using the services at weekends than midweek now.
So I've heard. I haven't looked ahead yet to see how Carlisle and it's routes will be affected.
I noticed a crossover and spur at Haltwhistle , is the spur redundant or in use?
For network Rail use. Tampers etc are parked there in preparation for engineering works.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks Les.
Those azuma are hybrids I believe?
The 800s are bi mode, 801s pure electric
So all Hitachi's must be bimotor's then?
The 800s are but the 801s pure electric.
