Unconscious Racial Bias: It’s Everywhere

  • Right wing demagogues like to pretend there’s no such thing as racial bias. They are objectively wrong. We have the studies. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
    "What it comes down to is a difference in perception. In the subconscious minds of many police officers, an armed white man is just a citizen exercising a constitutional right, while a black man carrying a gun is an imminent danger.
    Following the event in Minnesota, even the state’s governor, who is a white male, told the press that he didn’t believe the incident would have occurred had the driver been white. Similar sentiments were expressed by President Obama shortly after.
    Of course this does not mean that police forces across America are composed of open racists that actively conspire to take black lives. However, what has been proven by countless empirical studies is that, in general, brains respond differently to black males in ways that create a perceived threat out of an otherwise neutral event - a process that often occurs outside of conscious awareness.
    It doesn’t matter if the police officer does not consider himself a racist, or holds no overt racist beliefs or attitudes. It is an ugly fact of nature that an intrinsic racial bias that influences automatic reactions may be hardwired into his or her brain. Racism can accompany racial biases, or be driven by them, but a racial bias can exist independent from conscious racism as well. In fact, some studies show that the implicit racial bias towards blacks can even exist in black individuals themselves.”*

      ***** Actually, it's quite the opposite. It's TYT fans who finally realized that TYT is full of shit. You don't see that in their older videos from back when they used to be actual liberals and not regressives.
      Their dislikes get more and more (by their own followers, I am one) as time progresses, because TYT turns more and more into regressives every day, and we are reacting to that.
      For example, in videos where they talk politics and don't spew regressive lies and propaganda, like when they talk about Hillary's e-mails or about Bernie Sanders etc, upvotes consist the vast majority on the bar of the video.
      On videos where they turn into regressive social justice warriors with double standards, you can see how the votes are usually 50-50.
      If those were "trolls" or "right wingers" or simply "idiots" and "bots" as you put it, why aren't all of their videos downvoted? What type of coincidence is this where they downvote very specific videos? I read the title of a video on TYT and immediately know approximately how many downvotes compared to their upvotes it's going to have. And trust me, I'm pretty damn close every time.
      If the title is something along the lines of "new anti-abortion law pushed in X state" the bar is probably going to be 90% up and 10% down. Why? Because this channel has liberals, and liberals are pro choice. TYT will be also pro choice and everyone (almost) will upvote it.
      If however the title is something along the lines of "gamer losers hate women" (that was an actual TYT title once, but they changed it after a day or two), then it's going to have pretty much 60% downvotes and only 40% upvotes or some shit.
      Why? Because this channel has liberals, and liberals are anti-bullshit. TYT will spew some crap and most people will downvote them.

    You guys realize that in some of the most populated black areas, you have majority black police forces? which would mean that these sky high crime rates should be even higher if they weren't given special treatment by officers of their own race.

    • @kathykelly5930
      @kathykelly5930 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Panther King Did you watch the video? unconscious racial bias applies to all races. So by the theory, a white guy in a neighborhood with black cops is going to be given less lenient treatment than a black guy in a neighborhood with black cops.

    • @ftwnoobbuster
      @ftwnoobbuster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kathy kelly black cops still treat black people with the same racial bias as white cops in some cases so that is bullshit that we get "special treatment" from our own black cops because sometime the black cops are even more ridicolous than the white ones

    • @kathykelly5930
      @kathykelly5930 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Panther King obviously there can be instances of black cops being worse, but if the theory is by and large correct, your getting off easier with a black cop, than a white one. I'm not even so sure I believe in the theory, or at least that it exists in the way they say it does today. I've seen studies where white cops were less likely to fire on black suspects in similar situations compared to whites.

    I really hate to say it but this is true. I don't know if the fear is because I grew up in predominantly same-ethnicity areas (as in the person not registering as automatically friendly) or if it's a learned response. I do want this to change though. Why should skin color have such an impact even on a subconscious level?

    • @NelliButt
      @NelliButt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evolutionary reasons. We are afraid of things that are different.. Different skin tones, different religions, different cultures.. It's how human nature survived.

    • @Cruznick06

      @NelliButt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cruznick06 There's no way. I'd love for all of us to see each other equally and respect one another.. but that's not what humans are.. that's not what animals are. We will always be this way. But this doesnt mean racism is okay. Having fear is different from being a racist.

    • @Cruznick06
      @Cruznick06 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +NelliButt There is the consideration of maybe having more diverse schools, encouraging cross-community events that bring different ethnicities together, and continuing fighting the over racism. Normalize people of different races as friendly entities and eventually the fear responses will stop. It could possibly take multiple generations and you might need to start with children early in development but theoretically it could be changed.

  • @nailin18
    @nailin18 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay, but here's the thing, are those unconscious biases really divorced from reality? How much do these unconscious biases diverge from the statistic probability of a particular individual of a particular racial group actually being a threat relatively to the statistic probability of a given individual from a different racial group? Aren't these racial biases just following what happens in real life anyway, because if so one can't really be rid if these biases, since they are just a reflection of day to day life.
    Therefore, while being aware of these biases is important, they don't in themselves demonstrate a "problem" really, that is, its not a "problem" outside specific scenarios. Such as in dealing with the police or being chosen for a job, then the racial bias becomes a Problem, something that is truly harmful, because these are scenarios when impartiality is necessary, on such occasions there should be mechanisms put in place to do away with the consequences of such biases.

    I'm a white guy. I grew up in a single parent household with a working mother. This is my experience, it shapes the way I view the world. It's the basis of my unconscious bias. The important thing is that I know this. I know I can never have the experience of growing up black, with everything that comes with that. I can empathise, and try to understand but ultimately I cannot have an experiential understanding of what that is like. For me to comment or pretend I have more understanding of that situation than people who have lived it would be the height of arrogance. This is understanding my unconscious bias.

    Question for anyone with legal knowledge: If I went out in full prosthetic make-up fx as a middle aged black man (I'm a middle aged, light skinned Latino), to "test" the racial biases of local police, could I be charged with any crime? Is it considered "lying to an officer" or otherwise criminal to merely LOOK like a black man just to see if I'm treated differently? I've considered doing this experiment and posting videos of it, since I do have the skills to transform myself like this.
    Of course others have done this in the past. Though I'm not sure to what extent...

    The ebay study he referred to was flawed. They did not have a control group (no hand) and it was unusual for items being sold (baseball cards) to be shown with any hand at all. Also, they didn't have the same cards being sold by both experimental groups. Basically, this study needs to be corrected and redone before I'd be willing to site it as a source.

    Let's be real here, as human beings, we are hardwired to have a tribal mentality and to gravitate toward those we see as "our people" and away from those we regard "the other." But the thing is, even if this was the case, we do have the ability (thanks to our neo-cortex) to recognize that this exists and do something about it. The fact of the matter is, its better to recognize that 1) racism either implicit or explicit does exist and 2) you have internal biases (if any) and do your best to rectify those faults rather then just dismiss it as "uber-lib" or "SJW" pandering.

    1:54 I really would have liked to have seen that study done in the reverse as well. I feel pretty certain in my assumption that the results would be the same- that is, that black people would have the same unconscious increase in fear reaction when shown a white face, relative to a black face. Now that could simply be because we are more comfortable around people who are "like us," again not consciously, but subconsciously. but it could also be, and this may even be more likely, that black people, especially today, feel they are persecuted by white men, and are more comfortable around their black brethren because of it. Though I strongly feel it is a significant combination of the two. But agin, I just would have really liked to have seen that opposite study done as well, to get context.
    (this is the longest youtube comment I've ever written, but I'd like to hear others' thoughts on it.)

    Responding to the title, you BET it is. And it isn't restricted to one race or ethnic group, however much some prefer a comic book world in which one group of people is "the man," who is either riddled with prejudice and obdurate hatred or at best is "clueless," and another, persecuted and subjugated group that is invariably virtuous and in the right. Fact is, human beings, even the best intentioned, are masses of preconception and prejudices. The more thoughtful and empathetic among us manage our prejudices reasonably well by being empathetic, self-aware and self-critical. Unfortunately, empathy and self-awareness of one's own prejudices seems to be in widespread decline.

    I thank you for bringing this out and loud. I'm am immigrant from Nigeria with lofty ideals of American without distinguishing between races. It's however shocking initially that some white folks watch me and my black partner suspiciously whenever we were in predominantly white gatherings. My take is that Republicans play the racial divide to perpetrate themselves politically by creating fears of losing dominance or the white privileges to the blacks. It's the same approach in exaggerating external threat of invasion to have a grip on the white folks as the credible Party that can protect nd save America from external invasion. In the 80s, it was the fear of Breznev of Russia or Castro of Cuba. In the 90s, it was Chairman Mao of China, while later in the 2000, it was alQueda, Sadaam and now ISIS.

    I assume it's not a societally conditioned response like Cenk said as much as an inborn response to faces different than those a baby grows up around. It used to be useful to be suspicious of or aggressive to someone who looked different than you. That person was likely from a different country or tribe and could be a threat. Now people of all races are part of our tribe, but the amygdala response is still there and we (especially those of us with authority and guns) need to be aware of it and fight it. It would be interesting to test adopted kids or kids from mixed families to see how their brains respond to the images.

    If one considers the apparent behavior of various groups of early Homo sapiens as they moved across continents & straits, these results aren't surprising. I don't recall the exact source, but studies of early North American groups strongly indicate that there was a LOT of intertribal conflict between small groups of the early hunter-gatherers. Iirc they've also found indications (or have strongly surmised) that European Neanderthals & Homo sapiens likely fought each other, too.
    Tribalism & tribal identity was clearly apparent even between small towns & hamlets in Europe in the 1800's - & still exists to some extent in areas like Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, remote areas of China, Mongolia, & more.
    One even sees the human instinct to separate into distinct groups in adolescent behavior, as pre-teens & teens separate themselves into various social groups - the jocks & cheerleaders, the geeks, the Goths, etc.
    Prejudice, suspicion & mistreatment of "outsiders" who don't look like members of certain groups is an unfortunate side-effect of human evolution.
    Now we need to evolve past that behavior.

    wouldn't it be preferable to refer to it as subconscious bias? Unconscious bias suggests that we can't do much about it or even understand why there is that bias. Doesn't everybody have all types of biases? and aren't they different for everybody? And if the end goal is real change in people's attitudes, then why focus on something you can't change because you're not at all aware of it. It's quite unclear to me what the end goal here is, but maybe I'm overthinking it, maybe this sort of stuff is not meant for me to do anything with, maybe it's only meant to inform people that think that as long as they're not lynching people, they're not racist? Sometimes I forget how retarded most Americans are so you'll have to excuse me for being a bit confused.
