Awesome video. I use first peak now always when doing a thickness/lamination scan before my shear wave weld inspection. I like to do the lam scan first and make sure there’s no laminations and then I can get an exact thickness to put in for my shear wave so I can trust my machines trig math a little more. I really like your videos, and hope to one day be as smart with UT stuff as you are!
I usually prefer, edge mode with negative half-wave rectification, find way less lobe switching than with positive half-wave rectification for some reason. Am I crazy? I sometimes wonder if echo-to-echo produces artificially uniform thickness measurements sometimes over using a single back wall (No coating and with coating) Am I crazy?
Depends on what you're trying to do and the type of signal you are looking at and the precision you need. For normal applications, flank is fine for thickness. But if half a millimeter is important to you, then you probably need to look at using peak or first peak and maybe an unrectified signal.
you mentioned that in thickness measuring thin stuff gate mode is important, well, what kind of applications specifically should I be using Edge, Flank, and j-Flank? Are they suitable for composite material inspection other than metals like steel?
Great explained video, just a quick question. When setting up a prob for calibration on a V2 block to set the 25mm angle what would you use, the peak or flank mode? Cheers

J-Flank is a flank mode per JIS. So if you are not working in Japan or for Japan customers, no need to use J-Flank.

For thickness measurement, edge/flank/j-flank are all the same thing.

For shear wave it doesn't really matter. The difference you'll see in sound path is negligible.
