Two and a Half Legs
Full disclosure, I'm not old enough to have grown up on analog UT sets. But my first exposure to UT was on an oscilloscope in university, so I have an appreciation for reading what the A-scan is doing without looking at the numbers. And yes, I do own that Sonatest/Balteau unit and there *is* a purely analog video in the pipeline. #laughatyourself

Not enough is discussed about exactly what each of these calibrations accomplishes, and why one is absolutely necessary and the other is usually superfluous. Just because there's a button there doesn't mean you have to touch it.

Good day sir, we have to make a PAUT procedure but the client concern is transverse crack. Can you tell me or make a video discussing the right approach to finding transverse crack
Those are pretty hard to find. You really have to skew the probe. I'll make a video on them someday. I have a nice sample here.
@hollowayndtengineeringinc.5201 how about pitch-catch method using omniscan x3?
can you give me contact number
Excellent Explanation sir 👍
thanks for the knowledge you r offer
Thanks for such a nice video..very informative
Great video as always. Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul for the explanation. Can you explain that after sensitivity calibration when we go for the first point of TCG calibration we are reducing the gain initially. After tracing, once we add the point, all angles compensates to 80% but the visual dB on omni scan doesn't increase. Can you please explain. Thanks
This should not be the case if the 1st point of the TCG is also the point you did the sensitivity calibration with.
<PH uses SWIPE attack> <dB DROP takes 50 damage> <CRITICAL HIT>
Thanks sir🙏
I started UT in the late 70's with a USM2 /USK 6 ,you soon pick up the trigonometry ratios to determine flaw location. What has changed is the lost art of echo dynamics. Which was much easier with an analogue set. Determining a root pattern from LORF or hydrogen flake from N.M.I.s in a heavy forging. Having been a PCN examiner it is possible to get a distinction whilst failing to recognise and correctly identify any of the flaws in the exam samples. Which should be a concern, similar to radiography without Rad interpretation. I obtained my PAUT /Tofd qualification 10 years ago (not recertified it) PAUT will definatley take over from manual UT as the price of it drops and it becomes standard on UT sets. I have to admit after years of manual UT I found PAUT / Tofd in practise very boring. Last week I took part in corrosion mapping an oil processing spooling an 8 hour shift felt like two weeks.
Love your videos mate! Just about to jump into PAUT, super excited! Would love a video on your preferences for encoders, wire vs wheel encoders etc, how to use different encoders, what’s most practical for real world non test plate jobs? You’re doing gods work mate, keep this gold mine of a channel going!
I'm not surprised your sizing was inaccurate. You should only use 6db drop method on reflectors larger than the beam (Inverse Laws). Using it on a through thickness reflector like this would over size by 2-3 times. Max amp would have been very accurate if applied correctly.
I agree with it being used only on flaws larger than the beam, but I would also extend that to only large, purely planar flaws, which essentially limits it only to laminations. Alas, there is a lot of misunderstanding around it, and it continues to be taught as some sort of viable tool when in most cases it's just misleadingly simple.
@@hollowayndtengineeringinc.5201 Training for UT to level 2 is only 120hrs of which around 80hrs is practical training. So the concepts have to be simplified and we are only able to teach rudimentary skills in this timeframe. A L2 exam candidate is expected to find, identify and locate the reflector relative to its position in the weld. Detection and location are weighted more highly in marking than accurate measurement of the reflector. Going back to 6dB drop again (I know you LOVE this method lol). 6dB drop can be used on any type of reflector and can be very accurate on some reflectors, especially if the method is mechanised with a scanner. However the major mistake operators make is that the measured length is that of the reflector PLUS the beam width at that beam path (depth). If you subtract the beam width you will get the a more accurate length :)
Thank you for the shout out x
I always teach my students the 10/8 V-path in my UT classes. Love the Carolinas connections in this video: Adam Daniels at Sonaspection, FlawTech, and Vermon NDT.
Absolutely excellent training. I’m not out in the field doing the UT two step anymore, but I really could have benefited from these videos back when I was out in the field, I would find SOMETHING and didn’t know how to interpret, and I would facetime a friend who is a jedi master of UT so he could watch my screen.
1st again!
thank you Paul for taking the time and effort to break things down...i appreciate your dedication.
Awesome videos man, I appreciate that you do these. It is good to have a practical refresher to look at if I need a reminder of how something works. Besides I see you write your reports in crayon like I do so we are on the same page 🤣
Would you be able to do a video on explaining Refracted L Waves using a DMA-DLA Probe for austenitic stainless steels? A quick concept on why they are needed and quick set ups with the angle sweeps.
I just gotta get me one of them fancy probes. Be right back (car noises, exhaust smell)

thank u so much, i appreciate the explanation
Like to see more videos on MUT as well
"When in doubt blame it on wave mode conversion" - As I've always told the new guys The near side signal can be very large in amplitude and appear on the full weld in some piping I've work with. Visual, Manual UT, MT, RT, see nothing just a slighty concave at the edge of the root bead and I've no idea why it's so large.
Same video for velocity calibrations, not always a requirement if the +/- is within code allowance.
You should mention Praveen Pilgam here lol
RIP my boy Praveen. Probably got his certs from a cereal box.
Shouldn't have watched this half way through my course.... Thanks Paul!
Great video as always. Thanks. xox
Does this logic work the same if the sensitivity reflector is a different size than the TCG reflectors?
Sorta, yeah. It will just skew things but after the TCG you should be fine. Even if you ran the sensitivity calibration on a radius (as it was originally intended) and not a hole or a notch, the TCG will fix everything.
So just wedge delay then TCG?
Pretty much, yeah.
@@hollowayndtengineeringinc.5201 Hai could you provide a precal vedio for sectorial and linear using single index how to do the accurate precal please make a vedio..... Thank you

Thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you very much for your fantastic videos as always. Just wondering, do you have any plans to do anything about TOFD? , probably it's something missing on your channel. Peace, best of luck ;)
I just ran TOFD this week. But it was thin wall and a little underwhelming. Gotta get me some of them Limbo TOFD probes from GB and try again.
@hollowayndtengineeringinc.5201 good luck with that one, hopefully it goes better next time!

The learning curve of BEAM TOOL is very steep
Good afternoon from Western Australia; I've been religiously watching Paul's videos for many, many moons and I always find something that I didn't know that I didn't know about UT, so thank you Paul for all your efforts. I am considering buying sonatest wave, and have been searching for a "6 months or 1 year" type of reviews to see how this instrument performs in real life situations. After all, UT testing is a messy business so I am wondering how this arrangement works where couplant is present and will inevitably transfer onto the screen, sometimes in quantities. Does this arrangement creates a limitation as far as controlling the instrument? I would appreciate any feedback from users, Thank you, Chris
The Wave has a pretty good resistance to couplant blobs. Physical buttons with a non-touch screen still have advantages, but in most cases the Wave layout (all screen, no buttons) wins out... unless you're in the messiest of situations and trying to press on the screen. You always need a clean fingertip or knuckle if you want to keep the screen blob free.
Which CAD program are you using to create your surface? I have Inventor and Fusion. I would like to try doing this if you have a link to a tutorial for creating a surface using UT data.
I use Alibre
@@hollowayndtengineeringinc.5201 Do you have a link to a good tutorial? I've not been successful in locating one for attempting this myself. Thanks!
Interesting concept, as additive manufacturing is now a thing, I wonder if you could record a profile, print out of a metallic material and start the chain again by scanning the same 'print' getting the same signal response - just wondering if a metallic printed material would lend itself to scanning with useable results?
Hrm... like dubbing a cassette back in the 80's!
It does not work well. I've tried a number of things to make this work, such as even going as far as extreme heat and low z offset to force the layer lines together. there is still too much molecular gap for sound to punch through nicely. My next attempt will be with an epoxy resin mold of a step wedge. if that works nicely then we can 3d print a mold of any object and proceed but the velocity will differ greatly obviously
Never considered using PAUT data like this. Ive sent mesh surfaces from Creaform scans to recreate dents and metal loss on scaled models piping, cool mementos if nothing else. Have you tried recreating weld defects using 100% infill? Think it would be a unique way to develop scan plans or teach newer techs. Essentially simulated flaw plates at a major fraction of cost. Only doubt is how well sound would travel, think the layering from printing would cause issue.
I thought about it, but sound won't go anywhere in an FDM print. Well I shouldn't say that... I did print 100% infill PETG sheet, about 2mm thick, with 0.05mm layer height and ironing after each pass. And I can get through it with my 10MHz pen probe... barely.
I was looking up what QUPA PAUT meant. But you basically summed it up for me. I Understand that it’s an instrument to inspect welds. Now, since I’m a helper in welding, do you think I could take an inspection class and move past the welding part? To be an inspector?
Yup. But there's no turning back... NDT is the most amazing thing ever!

Hello, I think probe resolution verification is missed here.. .
For sure.. that's why it's a general overview. Can't teach all the nooks and crannys of AWS D1.1 in 5 minutes.
I think there is an error in the drawing shown in the AWS D1.1 standard (Figure 8.13-Typical IIW Type Block). The depth for a 50 mm diameter hole is shown as 23 mm. The sound speed equivalent of 23 mm Plexiglas is 50 mm for steel. AWS D1.1 block prices are high due to the error.😆😆
This is really helpful, don't do a lot of AWS specific inspection here in New Zealand so will remember this when it crops up again
